About Beck Center

Beck Center for the Arts is proud to be a part of ’s professional theater landscape. Like our colleagues , , Dobama Theatre, and Great Lakes Theater, Beck Center has a letter of agreement with Actors’ Equity Association. We hire professional actors from the Northeast Ohio region, including members of Actors’ Equity. Specifically, we are a Small Professional Theater (SPT) based on the number of seats, number of our performances, and the maximum weekly hours of work we provide to actors. We are also a producing theater. We produce every show on our stages. Meaning we choose the play, cast and rehearse it, build the sets, props, and costumes, direct and perform the music, and design lights and sound, utilizing regional resources and talent, all for you, our valued patron of the arts. Stephen Sondheim

Gemini Tower I, Suite 550 1991 Crocker Road Cleveland, Ohio 44145 440-835-0600 Welcome to Beck Center A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Kander & Ebb took the impending change of WWII, a framing device of song & dance and fashioned what we now know as Cabaret, satirically enhancing the thoughts and emotions of its soon to be doomed characters. They took the story of a fame hungry anti-hero, the American art form of Vaudeville and created , poking fun at the often laughable intricacies of the American legal system.

In The Scottsboro Boys, they take the oldest American art form, a minstrel show, the legendary story that sparked the civil rights movement and — in their final collaboration as a team — created the show you’re going to see.

The show was created using all of the tropes of minstrel shows: overblown caricatures, laughs and jokes, and blackface. All the things that were once applauded as art. We hope the injustices you see tonight, ripple through the theatre as it has through American history to expose the ever present racism against the African American community. The curtain will be pulled back and we present to you our past in the effort to not make it our future. Because, after all, if we’re entertained, we’ll listen, there is nothing more American than that. Black Lives Matter.

Thank you, Director & Choreographer JON MARTINEZ

• Before getting arrested, only four of the nine boys knew each other. They were not even staying in the same train car.

• 18 years elapsed between the false arrest and the final Scottsboro Boys trial.

• Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, takes some of its inspiration from the events of The Scottsboro Trial.

• The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously in 2013 to issue posthumous pardons to Haywood Patterson, Charlie Weems, and Andy Wright.

• The trials of the Scottsboro Boys helped encourage the civil rights movement and left a legacy on our nation and culture.
