While driving on a long dirt road in the desert they encountered a violent storm, and Springsteen wrote a song about the experience called ‘The Promised Land’. Meola was transfixed as well by the display of nature’s fury.     MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Students will also consult primary source material—including interviews with several of the musicians, influential literature of the period, and essays by key figures of the movement—in order to gain insight into the social, political,

Wenner and Gleason told Wolman about a new publication they were starting. It would be about contemporary music and the musicians who made it. That magazine, Rolling Stone, would go on to become one of the most iconic magazines ever published and Baron Wolman was the first chief photographer. Happy Daze: The Summers of Love is a book celebrating Baron Wolman's incredible archive of photographs from three incredible years in cultural history. From festivals such as Woodstock and Altamont, musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and moments including the Human Be-In and Death of Hippie marches, Wolman was on the visual front lines of an important period in the history of American society. I proposed hooking up with him and shooting for free, asking only to be reimbursed for film and processing. My payment would be stock in the company. Also, the magazine would have unlimited use of the photographs but I would retain ownership of them. SB: What equipment were you using then? BW: Mostly a Nikon F and its several lenses. All camera settings were manual; at concerts I took a spot meter reading of the performers’ faces to determine exposure. Depending on the stage lighting, I usually shot at f/2 or f/2.8 with shutter speeds of Jimi Hendrix, San Francisco, 1968. 1/60th to 1/250th of a second. After the show I’d develop the film–Kodak Tri-X pushed to ASA [ISO] 800-1200—make contact sheets and prints, and then deliver CLASSIC ROCK them to the magazine.
