If you are a photographer of people, this is great to studyBy Brad M.A wonder collection of photos from the late 1960'summer. From the magazine Rolling Stone.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great photos, but not in-depth about the Groupies themselves.By LynxFor years I've admired Baron's groupie series and was excited to find the complete collection. Each woman is as fascinating as the rockstars they adored. Included is the 1969 Rolling Stone article in which Wolman's photos were first seen as well as a small essay on the term groupie and how it's shifted over time. I was hoping for a more complete look at these women, unfortunately it's only a select few who get to share their story and theres no update on what happened to these women after the article and photos came out. Still, absolutely gorgeous collection of 60's rock n roll babes!Anyone wanting a more in-depth look into the world of groupies should check out Muses and Stuff, a podcast dedicated to all rock n roll women!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A good supplement to I'm With the BandBy Robert FisherEarlier this year, I read Pamela des Barres' memoir I'm With the Band. It was an interesting look at that era and when I saw this book the other day, I bought it. It is mostly the photos of Baron Wolman and articles that ran in Rolling Stone in early 1969 about the groupie phenomenon. Des Barres herself is there with her famous circle, the GTO's. but you would not know from the writing that she was fated to become the definitive groupie. Among the other women, I was particularly struck by the twins Laura and Lynn Sanchez (they are on the cover). Their photos were great but there was little text material about them in either their heyday or later years. If anyone has any "whatever became of" information, it would be most appreciated. This is not the definitive text on groupies but I found it a nice supplement to des Barres' book. New edition now available of the acclaimed book Groupies Other Electric Ladies by iconic photographer Baron Wolman, with photographs taken for the February 1969 'Special Super-Duper Neat Issue' of Rolling Stone.Key images from a time of explosive revolution in music and culture - featuring Pamela des Barres, Catherine James, Sally Mann, Cynthia Plaster Caster and many moreThe original chronicle of the women who became deeply influential style icons, integral to the worlds of musicians like Frank Zappa, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Captain Beefheart, Alice Cooper, The Who and Gram ParsonsFeatured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and New Yorker magazineVoted one of the Best photo books of the year by the New York Post' ...style and fashion mattered greatly, were central to their presentation, and I became fascinated with them I discovered what I believed was a subculture of chic and I thought it merited a story.' - Baron WolmanThe 1960s witnessed a huge cultural revolution. Music was at the heart of a new generation's rallying cry for love, peace and harmony - from small clubs to giant festivals like Woodstock. With men predictably dominating as musicians and performers, the women and girls backstage started to explore their own forms of liberation and self-expression. They became better known as the Groupies - offering their allegiance to the music, and the artists who made it.On February 15, 1969 Rolling Stone magazine released a 'Special Super-Duper Neat Issue' called 'THE GROUPIES and Other Girls' featuring the work of their chief photographer, Baron Wolman. It would turn out to be a sensational milestone, making instant celebrities of the women featured. With this single issue, the Groupies had arrived. They emerged as extraordinary women, whose lifestyles divided opinion and remain controversial. Some became models, actresses, writers, artists and musicians - the GTOs, the original 'Groupie band' admired and encouraged by Frank Zappa, is featured here. Others fell into obscurity. Now, over 45 years later, ACC and Iconic Images are proud to publish the photographs of Baron Wolman in a single volume. Groupies and Other Electric Ladies features more than 150 images, including previously unseen out- takes and contact sheets, and comes complete with the original Rolling Stone text, as well as interviews with several of the women today. Mr. Wolman's view of the women as style icons comes into sharp focus thanks to a new coffee-table book, Groupies and Other Electric Ladies. It collects his published portraits along with outtakes, contact sheets, the original articles from the issue and new essays that put the subjects into a modern context. The thick paper stock and oversize format emphasizes Mr. Wolman's view of the groupies as pioneers in hippie frippery. - --Jim Farber New York Times, November 11, 2015'Groupies' can be understood as an unapologetic celebration of how a coterie of self-liberated women ultimately chose to explore that complex, ancient idea to see what happens when a person comes at beauty with beauty, when she gives herself over, entirely, to an abstraction. - --Amanda Petrusich The New Yorker, December 29, 015About the AuthorBaron Wolman began the music phase of his photographic career in 1967, as the very first photographer for the new Rolling Stone magazine. He went on to capture the 60s pop rock explosion, including: Janis Joplin, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan amongst many more. 'I see myself as a kind of voyeur ... I'm happiest when I'm invisible and watching. I just love to watch. I'm a chameleon and can adapt myself to the situation, and that, to me, is one of the gifts that I was given naturally, and that's how you get honest pictures.' MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Students will also consult primary source material—including interviews with several of the musicians, influential literature of the period, and essays by key figures of the movement—in order to gain insight into the social, political,

From that moment, O’Neill’s association with Bond was made: an enduring legacy that has carried through to the era of Daniel Craig. It was O’Neill who captured gritty and roguish pictures of Connery on set, and it was O’Neill who framed the super-suave Roger Moore in Live and Let Die. His images of Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore are also important, celebrating the vital role of women in the James Bond world. But it is Terry O’Neill’s casual, on- set photographs of a mischievous Connery walking around the casinos of Las Vegas or Roger Moore dancing on a bed with co-star Madeline Smith that show the other side of the world’s most recognisable spy. Terry O’Neill opens his archive to give readers - and viewers - the chance to enter the dazzling world of James Bond. Lavish colour and black and white images are complemented by insights from O’Neill, alongside a series of original essays on the world of James Bond by BAFTA-longlisted film writer, James Clarke; and newly-conducted interviews with a number of actors featured in O’Neill’s photographs.

  • From Straight to Bizarre Zappa, Beefheart, Alice Cooper and LA's
From Straight To Bizarre Zappa, Beefheart, Alice Cooper And LA's Lunatic Fringe Sexy Intellectual DVD This considered examination of the eccentric landscape of the infamous Bizarre/Straight catalogue makes for compleling viewing and with a running time of some two hours and 40 minutes the film gives its subject the screen time it so richly deserves. Created by Zappa and Mothers manager Herb Cohen in 1968 as a release outlet specialising in the weird, the wonderful and the strictly non mainstream following Zappa's clashes with his former label MGM over the old stumblig block of artistic control the extraordinary Bizarre/Straight story is infamous for having given the world such unforgettable cultural landmarks as An Evening With Wild Man Fischer and Trout Mask Replica. With Zappa operating as LA's resident king of the freaks from his Laurel Canyon hideaway, the documentary chronicles the labels groundbreaking appetite for assembling a notorious roster of misfits including The GTOs, Wild Man Fischer, Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Tim Buckley, accappella gospel group The Persuasions and the labels greatest commercial success Alice Cooper via the input of interviewees including Pamela Des Barres, Kim Fowley, Bill Harkleroad, John French, Neal Smith, Dennis Dunaway, Jeff Simmons and an impressive array of vintage performance footage. While the Bizarre/Straight era represented a unique chapter in the annals of the late 60s and early 70s the thrust of the film's critical commentary is that if the entire Bizarre/Straight operation had only given the world Trout Mask Replica it would still have more than have achieved its goal.

Wenner and Gleason told Wolman about a new publication they were starting. It would be about contemporary music and the musicians who made it. That magazine, Rolling Stone, would go on to become one of the most iconic magazines ever published and Baron Wolman was the first chief photographer. Happy Daze: The Summers of Love is a book celebrating Baron Wolman's incredible archive of photographs from three incredible years in cultural history. From festivals such as Woodstock and Altamont, musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and moments including the Human Be-In and Death of Hippie marches, Wolman was on the visual front lines of an important period in the history of American society. "At that moment it all came together for me as a photographer.
