WEG Minutes 25.05.18 Warfield Environment Group Meeting on Wednesday 25 May 2018 At 8.00pm at the Plough & Harrow Minutes Present: Mark Collings, Sheila Collings, Adrian Haffegee, Annie Hill, Martyn Towle, Claire Wallen, Richard Wallen 1. Apologies: Amy Grandvoinet 2. Treasurer’s report: WEG has recently received a grant of £240 from Warfield Parish Council (conditions of funding noted), and also £518 as a good cause in the Bracknell Forest Council Recycling Incentive Scheme. Bank account £872.20 Cash £ 23.25 Total £895.45 3. Outstanding actions from previous meeting a. Veteran Tree Survey at Hayley Green: WEG was refused permission by one of the landowners following a request by a resident. It was agreed not to pursue with the other landowners. Actions -Claire will request copies of Neighbourhood Plan environmental surveys from Warfield Parish Council b. Bracknell Forest Council recycling good cause nomination: cheque received at presentation at Larks Hill, and letter of thanks sent. Actions -Claire to send letter of thanks to Warfield Parish Council for their grant c. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): 53 members re-signed for the mailing list and 39 did not. In addition 5 new members signed up at the Bat Safari and a further 5 at the Flower Walk. Actions -Claire to add a disclaimer to the sign-in sheet, along the lines of ‘you do this activity at your own risk’ 4. Recent events a. Hedge maintenance: (10 March) 6 adults weeded and mulched a section of the hedge planted in 2014. More to do. b. Keep Britain Tidy Spring Clean: (rescheduled to 24 March due to snow) 11 adults and 3 children picked up 9 sacks of rubbish and 3 of recyclable material in and around Larks Hill. c. Bird box building: (15 April) 10 adults and 5 children made 12 bird boxes (one was purchased). d. Newt Survey: (20/21 April) 19 adults and 10 children attended. 13 great crested newts (3 male, 10 female) and 17 smooth newts counted. e. Bat Safari (Chelsea Fringe): (19 May) 21 adults and 6 children attended. Lots of bats around Westmorland Pond. f. Flowers of the Field Walk & Talk (Chelsea Fringe): (22 May) 10 adults and 1 child attended a very interesting event. 5. Agenda items a. Future events planning (to end/August 2018) i. Request for help – 1st Warfield Cubs: (Friday 15 June) With their environmental conservation badge. Catalina has agreed to help, 6pm-7.30pm, at Whitegrove Community Centre. Litter pick is easiest to organise with route along footpath to, and around, Westmorland Pond to avoid the litter pick route for the 2nd Bracknell Beavers on Monday 25 June. Actions -Sheila to confirm with Catalina and Rita Chauhan -Catalina to prepare talk about WEG -Annie to arrange litter collection ii. Warfield Village Fete: (Saturday 9 June) Actions -Mark and Adrian to attempt repair of gazebo -Sheila to consider how we might anchor display board in case the weather is very windy (as last year) -Adrian to take picnic table and workbench, Sheila to take green table -Adrian to contact Vicki Painter re borrowing of table(s) -Chairs: Annie (2), Claire (2) -Sheila to provide risk assessment -Catalina to take ‘selfie’ frame -Sheila to email members re plastic bottles, tetrapaks, milk cartons -Loppers, secateurs: Claire, Adrian, Sheila -Polypropylene twine: Sheila to check -Annie to buy pens for pebble ‘painting’ -Old shirts etc: take some to offer as pens are permanent! Budget planning: initial (major) purchases to include: i. Children’s gardening gloves (20 pairs) – in time for the Beavers litter picks in June, to be funded by our Parish Council Grant (Sheila) ii. Bat detector – a more sophisticated device which can identify bats itself, to be funded by the BFC recycling good cause donation (Claire) iii. Hi-vis armbands for children – for use during the next bat walk in September iv. Hedge – potentially trees plus guards, to be funded by the BFC recycling good cause donation (Sheila) 6. Any other business: a. It’s Your Neighbourhood 2018 judging to take place on Thursday 5 July at Larks Hill. Actions -Claire to confirm time to Sheila (3pm) b. Health & safety – the WEG first aid kit requires review, also need to consider a method of recording accidents. Actions -Annie to review first aid kit -Annie to investigate accident books/sheets c. Review of the Chairs report looking back at the WEG activities and achievements over the last 12 months, detailed below: The Conservation / Rhododendron Clearance Days - Hayley Green Wood - Nov ‘15 & Jan ’16: - We had a much better uptake than previous conservation days at both events and we were able to clear a considerable amount of rhododendron bushes/trees and plant more trees, mostly Hazel, donated by The Woodland Trust. Tree Survey Events – Aug ‘15 & Apr ’16 & members measuring trees individually: - Collectively the group has surveyed and recorded 75 trees – many of them oaks but other notables including wild service tree, sweet chestnut and Wellingtonia. 2016 marks ‘Year of the Tree’ so Bracknell Forest Borough Council (BFBC) have been keen to promote and focus on trees in local urban areas of Bracknell. They are very happy with the tree surveys we have completed so far in Warfield. We discussed Frost Folly and Hogoak Lane as potential sites for future tree survey events. Newt Survey – May’16 – Thomas Lawrence Brickworks Newt Reserve: - We recorded 5 Great Crested Newts and 20 Smooth Newts. BBC Radio Berkshire attended the event. Adrian Haffegee received his Great Crested Newts Activities Licence this year which will enable him to run future newt survey events. More surveys planned at Thomas Lawrence Brickworks Newt Reserve and also Rachel’s Lake.

    JEALOTT’S HILL, WARFIELD TECHNICAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW NOTE ON ECOLOGICAL CONSTRAINTS AND OPPORTUNITIES Executive Summary Development at the Jealott’s Hill site offers the opportunity to create extensive areas of new species and wildflower-rich mesotrophic grassland, through the reversion of arable land and through the diversification of existing improved grassland currently in agricultural use. Small patches of existing more diverse semi-improved grassland around the current research campus buildings could also form the basis of a significant project to create or restore new areas of ‘lowland meadow’ priority habitat; either through their retention and positive management in situ to promote enhancement, or through the use of the soil seed bank in these areas to diversify larger parts of the rural hinterland of the estate currently in agricultural use. Existing species-rich hedgerows can also be subject to positive future management using traditional conservation-friendly methods such as laying, with older hedgerows prioritised for retention within the layout, and new species-rich native hedgerows planted in conjunction with the proposals. Existing ponds can be subject to ecological restoration to improve their suitability for a range of species including aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, foraging bats and hunting Grass Snake. The habitats present both on site and in the wider area are likely to support a range of fauna of varying ecological importance including; amphibians, reptiles, breeding and overwintering birds (particularly farmland birds), mammals such as bats and Badgers, and invertebrate assemblages. The scale of the proposals and large areas of proposed Green Infrastructure being brought forward will provide the means to deliver new habitat for these species and this will be informed by further ecological survey work in due course.

  • Nuptown Character Area Nuptown Is a Small Scattered Hamlet on The
    Nuptown Character area Nuptown is a small scattered hamlet on the northern boundary of Warfield parish. It is defined as the area bordered by Bishops, Hawthorn, Nuptown and Cocks Lanes, which contains a mixture of ancient woodland, meadowland and arable fields. The area is designated Green Belt and mostly lies within the jurisdiction of Warfield Parish Council and Bracknell Forest Borough Council. Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council administer the eastern part of the area. Nuptown is characterised by open fields, leafy lanes and woodland dominated by deciduous trees of which the Oak, Ash, Hazel, Prunus, wild service trees (nationally rare) wild pear and crabapple, abound. The woodland area contains many wild flowers, and the bluebell wood straddling Ashmore Lane is a significant feature. The land is heavy of clay and surface drainage is maintained by a network of drainage ditches that take the water into Chawbridge Bourne and via The Cut, eventually into the Thames at Bray. The land is mildly undulating rising 50 feet to the north at Cruch Lane. The rural features are conductive to walking and riding, and there are a network of footpaths and bridleways that are well used by visitors to the area. The characteristics of Nuptown, its designation as Green Belt and its location at the northern perimeter of Bracknell Forest Borough Council make it the ideal area to provide the “Countryside Experience” to the benefit of all and particularly those living in the nearby urban areas. i. The varied wildlife. A wide spectrum of bird life exists in Nuptown from Barn Owls to Herons, Birds of Prey and Nightingales.
