The first reading is focused on the vineyard itself: it is the vineyard that fails, and Isaiah tells us: the Lord’s vine- yard is the house of Israel. Vatican II is telling us that we, the Church, are the people of God, the vineyard of the Lord. So, how are we in bearing fruits for the Lord? In the Psalm the focus is on the vineyard’s owner, God, who is seen by the psalmist as having “failed”!!! Have you ever felt being abundance? The gospel’s parable is focused on the tenants: it is they, who have failed, not the vineyard and not the owner. The parable is about stewardship but also about hardness of heart. The religious leaders rightly understood it as addressed to them. But it is also addressed to us as stewards of our received giftedness, which we may be tempted to hoard for our own benefit, disregard- ing God’s claim on it. ---We are now in the month of October, it is the month of Respect for Life, as a people of faith, we value the “gift of Life - from con- ception to natural death” and we continue joining with our Church to pray for this gift of Life and the “Freedom to choose Life” and “Religious Freedom” with a Novena (9 days) in this effort. ---October is also the Month of the Rosary - The Feast of Our Lady of Rosary - October 7th. There are opportunities to pray the Rosary before each Mass on the weekend; come early before Mass and join with other parishioners to pray this beautiful traditional prayer for Life and Peace. There is a “Living Rosary - everyone is invited to participate in this event on Saturday, October 17th - 1:00 PM at St. Gabriel’s Parking Lot Marian Statue and a part of this Living Rosary Prayer. Maria Murphree will livestream this event on the parish Facebook and the par- ish website as well. Also, remember to pray the Rosary with your family for Life and Peace in the World throughout this month of October. ---Thank you, Bill Gibbs-Egan and Tony Melchiors, who are the co-Chairs of, St. Gabriel and Prince of Peace, respectively, for the Called to Serve as Christ Archdiocesan Campaign, which has begun this month (September 20th - October 11th). Bill has shared his thoughts about this special Archdiocesan campaign last weekend at Prince of Peace and the weekend before at St. Gabriel, in inviting us to recall the memories and influences of the priests and religious sisters who have impacted our lives over the years. If you haven’t heard Bill’s talk on this Archdiocesan Campaign, you can see and hear him on the parish’s website. The Archdiocese has initiated a campaign to provide long-term funding for retirement and medical needs of priests and women religious, as well as support of individual parishes. Everyone should have already received a package from Archbishop Paul Etienne this past week, please read through this material prayer- fully and respond with a gift of Faith. Some of our parishioners have volunteered to give you a call to remind you about this campaign in the days and weeks ahead. Please receive their calls in the spirit of generosity and partaking in an opportunity to strengthen and build up the Body of Christ in our local Church of Western Washington (Archdiocese of Seattle). October 10th-11th is the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign GIVING WEEKEND. Some of you may have decided and submit your pledge for the Campaign early but otherwise, this weekend of October 10th-11th will be the time for us to turn in our pledges.     PASTOR’S MEANDERINGS 3 – 4 OCTOBER 2020 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME (A) SUNDAY REFLECTION Today’s readings make it clear that Christianity is a religion that makes demands, and that authentic Christians must be recognized by the fruits they bear. Isaiah has God, the lord of the vineyard, say, ‘I expected (rich succulent) grapes; why has my vineyard yielded only sour grapes instead?’ The Lord complained that He expected to find justice and integrity in His people, but all He could see or bear was bloodshed and the cry of the oppressed. The Gospel reading ends with the assertion that the kingdom will be given to those who will respond generously to the demands which the Lord will make on them, and who will produce the fruit of good works when God demands them. In our Second Reading,(Phil. 4:6-9) St. Paul’s wish is that people’s hearts and thoughts will be centered on Christ, on His example and on His teaching. He reminds his readers that they should practice the virtues that are admired and esteemed by all who appreciate what is best and noblest in human nature. The world should be able to see the goodness, the decency, the integrity and the graciousness of all who claim to be followers of Christ. How can we Christians who belong to a world where Christian values are being increasingly pushed to the margins of life live up to the demands and the high ideals that are expressed in these readings? How are we to live out in our daily lives the beliefs and principles we proclaim on Sunday? We who so often hear people decry the mores of contemporary society may be pleased to hear Paul suggest in today’s reading that we might learn useful lessons from those around us who may not be noted for their piety or religiosity, but who observe high moral standards and live by noble ideals.

    The Holy See BENEDICT XVI GENERAL AUDIENCE Saint Peter's Square Wednesday, 7 October 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters, The day after tomorrow, 9 October, will be the 400th anniversary of the death of St John Leonardi, Founder of the religious order of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God. He was canonized on 17 April 1938 and chosen as Patron of Pharmacists on 8 August 2006. He is also remembered for his great missionary zeal. Together with Mons. Juan Bautista Vives and Martín de Funes, a Jesuit, he planned and contributed to founding a specific Congregation of the Holy See for the missions, Propaganda Fide, which has forged thousands of priests down the centuries, many of them martyrs. Thus he was a luminous priestly figure whom I like to point out as an example to all presbyters in this Year for Priests. He died in 1609 from influenza, contracted while he was doing all he could to minister to those stricken by the epidemic in the Campitelli neighbourhood of Rome. John Leonardi was born in 1541 at Diecimo in the Province of Lucca. The youngest of seven siblings, his adolescence was marked by the rhythm of faith lived in a healthy, hard-working family, as well as by regular visits to a workshop in his home town that made and sold essences and medicines. When John was 17, his father enrolled him in an ordinary apothecary's course in Lucca, aiming to make him a future pharmacist, indeed an apothecary, as it was then termed. For about 10 years young John attended this course, alert and hardworking, but when, in accordance with the legislation of the ancient Republic of Lucca he earned the official recognition that would authorize him to open his own apothecary's shop, he started wondering whether the moment had not come to carry out a plan he had always had at heart.

(Matthew 21:40) FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Guest Reflection The Real Story The stone that the builders rejected There is a very powerful truth-telling device, as we saw two Sundays ago: has become the cornerstone; the device called story. The first story tells about “a friend” who carefully built a vinery: clearing stones, building a watchtower, planting the choicest vines (First Reading). He even “hewed out a wine press.” But the vineyard yielded bad grapes. God tells the people of Jerusalem and Judah in vivid language that they themselves are this vineyard, and that he is going to destroy it and trample it down. They would not let God's love grow up among them. In the Gospel Jesus embroiders this tale. In just one sentence he handles the part about planting a vineyard, digging out a wine press, building a tower. Then he goes further. In his version he says that the owner rents his rich vineyard to tenants, as was the custom, and he trusts them to raise choice grapes for him.
