Knight of the Month-September: Friendship Core Essentials Values are taught each month to PK -8th grade classes. This month’s focus has been on Friendship. At the end of the month, each homeroom teacher selects a student who exemplifies the value studied. Honorees are awarded with a certificate and a prayer card at school Mass. While our school Mass remains closed to visitors and guests, a group photo will be shared with parents.

First Friday Mass 8th grade SPPS students are invited to attend First Friday Mass each month at 6:30 a.m. followed by a private breakfast for the students who attend. Last month thirty students participated! They are also encouraged to wear professional dress and reflect on what it takes now to be successful in the future. It’s no accident that this is also when we celebrate the Vocations Mass and pray for the Lord to choose from our home those needed for His work. We look forward to seeing all of you again each and every First Friday.

People enter our lives too with their knowledge, support, and inspiration, In their own way, these people are messengers of God, prophets sent to give us enlightenment about our life’s journey. This week the sanctuary lights burn for: Vocations Box: Church: Hurricane Laura and Sally victims Chapel: Protection and healing from COVID-19 Contact the Parish Office to reserve your week. Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) Saint Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Le- panto—a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary. Clem- ent XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716. The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Marys. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light to this devotion. The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death, and resurrection. The Our Fathers remind us that Jesus’ Father is the initiator of salvation. The Hail Marys remind us to join with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. They also make us aware that Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of his earthly and heavenly existence. The Glory Bes remind us that the purpose of all life is the glory of the Trinity. The rosary appeals to many. It is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an at- mosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever.

St. John Leonardi (October 9) John Leonardi was born at Diecimo, . He became a pharmacist's assistant at , studied for the priesthood, and was ordained in 1572. He gathered a group of laymen about him to work in hospitals and prisons, became interest- ed in the reforms proposed by the Council of Trent, and pro- posed a new congregation of secular priests. Great opposi- tion to his proposal developed, but in 1583, his association (formally designated Clerks Regular of the Mother of God in 1621) was recognized by the bishop of Lucca with the ap- proval of Pope Gregory XIII. John was aided by St. Phil- ip Neri and St. Joseph Calasanctius, and in 1595, the con- gregation was confirmed by Pope Clement VIII, who appoint- ed John to reform the monks of Vallombrosa and Monte Ver- gine. He died in on October 9th of plague contracted while he was ministering to the stricken. He was venerated for his miracles and religious fervor and is considered one of the founders of the College for the Propagation of the Faith. He was canonized in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. 214 Westgate Road Lafayette, LA 70506 HONEY DOOS BY MIKE FREE ESTIMATES Specializing in Small Jobs State Inspection Commercial & Residential Glass Inside or Outside Your Home Auto Glass - Store Fronts Custom Shower Enclosures Michael Prather 288.0031 SALES • SERVICE • PARTS • ACCESSORIES 337-233-9383
