IV Abstract This research project aims at studying the independent video games, also known as Indie Games, from which we evaluate their potential as a means of authorial expression. The research made aims to answer the following question: what are the necessary conditions to consider Indie Games as a form of authorial expression? This issue includes a series of sub-questions that this research seeks to answer and clarify: from a review of the definition of Indie video game up to what is meant by a videogames author. In this sense, the work plan goes by, initially, conducting a thorough literature review to contextualize the investigated concepts and allow a proposal of its own definition - we start with the review of the concept of ludic activity, and game for a historical review of videogames with a focus on the role of its independent creators. In a second phase, by the study of the concept of author in its multiple relationships with forms of expression external to video games, pointing a plausible adaptation of this concept to Indie games. From this study and having delimited our research area, we are able to define those that seem to be the necessary conditions for the confirmation of a form of authorial expression in independent video games. The third part of this research project describes a statistical study from the video game finalists and winners of the Independent Games Festival, according to the categorization of the awards in competition. This study aims at the understanding and confirmation of key features in recognized and awarded independent video games. Such characteristics can be described in three conditions that we consider necessary to authorial expression, creativity, style and meaning. A survey was made to evaluate a more general public perception on these issues. The final part of this thesis focuses on an empirical study in which is discussed the creation of an independent video games studio as well as the development of three video games with a progressive approach to the assumption of the concept of independent video game as a form of authorial expression. • Video Games As Culture
There are only a few works that aim for a comprehensive mapping of what games as a culture are, and how their complex social and cultural realities should be stud- ied, as a whole. Daniel Muriel and Garry Crawford have done so, analyzing both games, players, associated practices, and the broad range of socio-cultural develop- ments that contribute to the ongoing ludification of society. Ambitious, lucid, and well-informed, this book is an excellent guide to the field, and will no doubt inspire future work. Frans Mäyrä, Professor of Information Studies and Interactive Media, University of Tampere This book provides an insightful and accessible contribution to our understand- ing of video games as culture. However, its most impressive achievement is that it cogently shows how the study of video games can be used to explore broader social and cultural processes, including identity, agency, community, and consumption in contemporary digital societies. Muriel and Crawford have written a book that transcends its topic, and deserves to be read widely. Aphra Kerr, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Maynooth University This page intentionally left blank VIDEO GAMES AS CULTURE Video games are becoming culturally dominant. But what does their popularity say about our contemporary society? This book explores video game culture, but in doing so, utilizes video games as a lens through which to understand contemporary social life. Video games are becoming an increasingly central part of our cultural lives, impacting on various aspects of everyday life such

Earlier research tends to pair the visual presentation of games together with the game narrative. However, game mechanics can also be expressed visually. In this thesis, game mechanics are the parts that form the game system such as the rules, the events, and the pieces of a game. This thesis studies how game mechanics are visualized. My research hypothesis suggests that there are components that consist of both game- mechanical and visual aspects. I have named them ludic visuals. This research identifies and explores the presence of ludic visuals in games from the perspective of what is available for a player. This thesis is largely based on previous game research and various theories of perception and experiencing. The experience of being inside a gameworld is deemed similar to the experience of being inside the real world, which made it possible to approach ludic visuals as functional parts of gameworlds.

But in an era rapidly being digitized, the educational system has possibly not really managed to catch up or succeed in implementing these digitalization’s in a meaningful and effective way. This inability to digitize has been growing more prevalent by each passing year with droppings in mathematical performance, as shown in the latest result for the tests carried out by PISA [1]. Out of this enlightenment, the Swedish government set out funding research projects in order to understand and examine the reasons behind this drop. But this study will not focus on the PISA result. In this study, we investigate whether educational games could be an answer to negate or halt these dropping in performance. In particular, the main aim of this study is to design and implement an educational game centered on solving mathematical problems in a new way not often seen in educational games, by implementing design choices mostly seen in highly developed video games. The results of this study show that there is some evidence that confirms that more highly developed games could be an excellent way of learning and possibly also the next evolution in the educational system seen in schools.

Andre skiller mellom konsollspill, PC-spill osv. (ulike “plattformer”). Den britiske journalisten Steven Poole skiller i boka Trigger happy: The inner life of videogames (2000) mellom noen store sjangerkategorier: shooter, racing, jump’n’run/plattformspill, beat’em-up, god games, strategispill, sportssimulasjoner, rollespill og puzzle-spill. Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen m.fl.s bok Understanding Video Games (2008) opererer med fire overordnete sjangrer: action, adventure, strategi og åpne, “process-oriented” spill. “We propose a genre system based on a game’s criteria for success […] So rather than focus on criteria like theme or narrative, the system we're proposing focuses directly on a feature important to games: goals, and how to achieve them.”

New Game Physics Added Value for Transdisciplinary Teams Andreas Schiffler A dissertation in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) University of Plymouth Supplemented by: Proof of Practice: 1 DVD video documentation, 1 DVD appendices, source code, game executable, and supporting files Wordcount: 76,970 Committee in Charge: Supervisor: 2nd Supervisor: Prof. Jill Scott Dr. Daniel Bisig Zurich University of the Arts (ICS) Zurich University of the Arts (ICST) University of Plymouth University of Zurich (AIL) March 11, 2012 Abstract Andreas Schiffler (2011), `New Game Physics: Added Value for Transdisciplinary Teams', Ph.D. University of Plymouth, UK. This study focused on game physics, an area of computer game design where physics is applied in interactive computer software. The purpose of the re- search was a fresh analysis of game physics in order to prove that its current usage is limited and requires advancement. The investigations presented in this dissertation establish constructive principles to advance game physics design. The main premise was that transdisciplinary approaches provide sig- nificant value. The resulting designs reflected combined goals of game devel- opers, artists and physicists and provide novel ways to incorporate physics into games. The applicability and user impact of such new game physics across several target audiences was thoroughly examined. In order to explore the transdisciplinary nature of the premise, valid evidence was gathered using a broad range of theoretical and practical methodologies. The research established a clear definition of game physics within the context of historical, technological, practical, scientific, and artistic considerations. Game analysis, literature reviews and seminal surveys of game players, game developers and scientists were conducted.
