Manchus: A Horse of a Different Color by Hannah Knight Abstract: The question of identity has been one of the biggest questions addressed to humanity. Whether in terms of a country, a group or an individual, the exact definition is almost as difficult to answer as to what constitutes a group. The Manchus, an ethnic group in China, also faced this dilemma. It was an issue that lasted throughout their entire time as rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911) and thereafter. Though the guidelines and group characteristics changed throughout that period one aspect remained clear: they did not sinicize with the Chinese Culture. At the beginning of their rule, the Manchus implemented changes that would transform the appearance of China, bringing it closer to the identity that the world recognizes today. In the course of examining three time periods, 1644, 1911, and the 1930’s, this paper looks at the significant events of the period, the changing aspects, and the Manchus and the Qing Imperial Court’s relations with their greater Han Chinese subjects. -

By February 2010, there are 16,921 households and 38,398 residents, among which 8,277 old people account for 21.5% of total residents; 3,126 children 8.1%; 514 disabled people 1.3%; 339 poor people 1.9%. There are such large scientific research units as 606 Institute, Middling Shenyang Design Academy, Photosensitive Academy, Vacuum Academy and so on with the military unit- Shen Kong Headquarters. There are all kinds of schools and 18 kindergartens as well as 363 small medium and large sized enterprises and public institutions. The community health station can provide services for the whole community, which develops the six-in-one hygienic service integrating prevention, medical care, recovery, healthy education and family planning at regular intervals. The citizen fitness ground is the largest one in Shenyang, which covers an area of 10,000 square meters in the community. Almost 5,000 exercisers are attracted by 354 fitness facilities every day. -

29 Feature II China in Chiba: Das Landhaus Aishinkakurafuketsukagū in Inage Nicht weit vom Bahnhof Keisei Inage liegt auf einem Hügel ein großer Shintō-Schrein, der Sengen Jinja. Früher bot sich von dort oben ein herrlicher Blick auf die Tokyoter Bucht ‒ heute ist von ihr allerdings nichts mehr zu sehen, wurden doch Polder ange- legt und freie Flächen bebaut. In unmittelbarer Nähe zum Schreingelände verläuft nun die Autobahn zwischen Tokyo und Chiba, und das Haupttor des Schreins, das vor dem Krieg noch im Meerwasser stand, liegt nun am Rande eines Wohnviertels. Trotzdem ist der Sengen-Schrein gut besucht, vor allem an Neujahr und am wichtigsten Festtag des Schreines Mitte Juli (in diesem Jahr am 14./15. Juli). Was die meisten Pilger nicht bemerken, weil es kaum zu sehen ist, ist ein niedliches kleines Häuschen auf der rechten Seite des Hügels, wenn man in Richtung Bucht sieht. Die Bescheidenheit des Häuschens täuscht aber, wohnte hier doch eine Zeit lang Pujie, der jüngere Bruder des letzten Kaisers von China und später der Mandschurei. Wenn man den Film Der letzte Kaiser von Bertolucci gesehen hat, ist kaum zu glauben, dass der Bruder des Kaisers Puyi, der in der Pracht der Verbotenen Stadt von Peking leb- te, in den dreißiger Jahren hier eine Weile sein Leben verbracht hat. In starkem Kont- rast zum weitläufigen Tian’anmen-Platz liegt das Häuschen in einer kleinen Gasse. Auf einem unscheinbaren Schild steht Aishinkakurafuketsukagū (愛新覚羅溥傑仮寓), also „Vorübergehende Residenz (kari no gū) von Aishinkakura Fuketsu (Pujie)“. Heute ist es ein Museum der Stadt Chiba. Mit der chinesischen Revolution von 1911 und der Gründung der chinesischen Repub- lik unter Sun Yat-sen hatte der letzte Kaiser Puyi als junger Mann noch eine erstaunli- che Laufbahn vor sich. -

1 A Garrison in Time Saves Nine: Frontier Administration and ‘Drawing In’ the Yafahan Orochen in Late Qing Heilongjiang Loretta E. Kim The University of Hong Kong [email protected] Abstract In 1882 the Qing dynasty government established the Xing’an garrison in Heilongjiang to counteract the impact of Russian exploration and territorial expansion into the region. The Xing’an garrison was only operative for twelve years before closing down. What may seem to be an unmitigated failure of military and civil administrative planning was in fact a decisive attempt to contend with the challenges of governing borderland people rather than merely shoring up physical territorial limits. The Xing’an garrison arose out of the need to “draw in” the Yafahan Orochen population, one that had developed close relations with Russians through trade and social interaction. This article demonstrates that while building a garrison did not achieve the intended goal of strengthening control over the Yafahan Orochen, it was one of several measures the Qing employed to shape the human frontier in this critical borderland. This milestone was distinctive because 150 years had passed since the last two were established, which had brought the actual total of garrisons within Heilongjiang to six.. The new Xing’an garrison (Xing’an cheng 興安城) would not be the last one built before the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) but it was notably short-lived, in operation for only twelve years before being dismantled. -

India’S Disputed Borderland Regions: Xinjiang, Tibet, Kashmir and the Indian Northeast
COMPARING CHINA AND INDIA’S DISPUTED BORDERLAND REGIONS: XINJIANG, TIBET, KASHMIR AND THE INDIAN NORTHEAST INTRODUCTION: India and China are seen as the rising giants on the Asiatic mainland today. After the East Asian miracle or miracle of the Asian Tiger economies of the mid-nineties, attention has shifted from the peripheral parts of the Asia Pacific, towards the Asiatic mainland, mainly towards India and China. Both countries have been experiencing impressive economic growth rates since they opened up their economies and exposed their domestic markets to international competition. China opened up its markets in the late seventies, and India opened up its markets in the early nineties. Before the seventies, both economies were by and large protectionist, and had a sluggish economic growth rate. Now, of course, both countries are seen as exciting economic destinations for international investors due to their adventurous markets, which western investors feel the need to tap into and exploit. India, of course, also has the additional prestige of being the world’s largest democracy. However, one area that still remains quite under researched, or at least gets side-lined due to all the talk on economic growth and development is the political situation and the on-going conflicts in the borderland regions of these two emerging powers. Having an understanding of the political situation in the borderland regions is important because if the situation ever blows out of proportion, this could potentially have an adverse impact on the economy, which indirectly impacts on our lives in the west, since western governments have invested so much money in these two countries. -

“We Are on the Brink of Disaster”: Revolution, War and Imperial Conflict in Blagoveshchensk-Heihe Yuexin Rachel Lin When Russian imperial power extended to the Amur in the mid-19th Century, Blagoveshchensk- Heihe became one of the foremost sites of imperial competition. The proximity of the Chinese and Russian cities, within sight of each other across the Amur River, engendered both connection and conflict, while the strategic waterway attracted Japanese trade. Some of the starkest manifesta- tions of Sino-Russian conflict had erupted there, including the 1858 Treaty of Aigun and the 1900 massacre of Chinese during the Boxer Rebellion. Control over Chinese migration became a peren- nial problem - which led to the deeply-resented river-crossing permit regime - and Japanese inter- est in commerce and shipping challenged both Russian and Chinese interests. Historical memories of such conflict persisted even as the Qing and tsarist regimes collapsed. They were brought to the fore by the arrival of the 1917 Russian Revolution, when the collapse of Russian state power offered the opportunity to recover past losses. This paper examines the vio- lence of the revolutionary and Civil War period in Blagoveshchensk-Heihe from the perspective of the Chinese community in both cities. It focuses on key economic and political actors — diaspora leaders and border officials — who formed self-defence organisations, appealed for greater military and diplomatic presence in Russian territory, and warned of Japanese opportunism on the Amur. In so doing, they appealed to emotive “moments” in Sino-Russian historical memory, particularly the Aigun Treaty and the Blagoveshchensk massacre. Therefore, this paper argues that the revolu- tionary upheavals in Russia fed into long-term discourses of Sino-Russian conflict, and that shared historical memories enabled disparate groups to take part in revisionist activism. -

Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Kevin Buckelew All rights reserved Abstract Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew This dissertation explores how Chan Buddhists made the unprecedented claim to a level of religious authority on par with the historical Buddha Śākyamuni and, in the process, invented what it means to be a buddha in China. This claim helped propel the Chan tradition to dominance of elite monastic Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960–1279), licensed an outpouring of Chan literature treated as equivalent to scripture, and changed the way Chinese Buddhists understood their own capacity for religious authority in relation to the historical Buddha and the Indian homeland of Buddhism. But the claim itself was fraught with complication. After all, according to canonical Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha was easily recognizable by the “marks of the great man” that adorned his body, while the same could not be said for Chan masters in the Song. What, then, distinguished Chan masters from everyone else? What authorized their elite status and granted them the authority of buddhas? According to what normative ideals did Chan aspirants pursue liberation, and by what standards did Chan masters evaluate their students to determine who was worthy of admission into an elite Chan lineage? How, in short, could one recognize a buddha in Song-dynasty China? The Chan tradition never answered this question once and for all; instead, the question broadly animated Chan rituals, institutional norms, literary practices, and visual cultures.
