    Kyoto University The Making of Politically Conscious Indonesian Teachers in Public Schools, 1930–42* Agus Suwignyo** This paper deals with the emergence of political consciousness among Indonesian teachers and students in public Dutch-Indonesian teacher training schools (Hollands Inlandse Kweekschool, HIK) during the last colonial decade up to the beginning of the Japanese occupation in 1942. Most of the Indonesian teachers and students, who pursued careers and education respectively in government schools, had initially embarked from personal expectations of upward economic mobility. Yet, in the course of the 1930s, they grew in deliberate willingness and perception to engage in a wider scope of social dynamics without limiting themselves to the area of power politics. In this paper, the manner in which these students and teachers gave mean- ing to their daily lives inside and outside of school is identified and analyzed as the factor that critically contributed to the emergence of political consciousness among them. Although the transformation that the teachers underwent in their view of school education was a radical leap when seen from the perspective of the Indonesia- centric historiography of the 1930s, it did not actually show a process of transforma- tive pedagogy. The sense of citizenship that the teachers shared in the 1930s, albeit a dramatic shift from the motivation that had originally propelled them, did not reflect the notion of public education as an independent practice of cultural upbring- ing irrelevant to the state and state-formation ideology. De inrichting van niet bij een provincie ingedeelde gebieden, zoals de IJsselmeerpolders, behoort op een pianologische taak- stelling gebaseerd te zy'n. 6. De onwettige occupatie van ondernemingsgronden op de Oostkust van Sumatra moet in de eerste plaats uit een behoef te aan woon- gelegenheid verklaard worden en niet uit een gebrek aan grond voor de vestiging van nieuwe boerenbedrjjven. 7. Het verhogen van de wooncultuur in minder ontwikkelde gebieden kan op het gehele maatschappeljjke leven van invloed zyn. 8. Vruchtbaar pianologisch werk is vrywel onmogeljjk inlanden, waar onzekerheden bestaan ten aanzien van het institdtionele kader, waarbinnen dat werk moet geschieden, zoals dat in het huidige Indonésie het geval is.

    THE PARTAI NASIONAL INDONESIA 1963-1965 J. Eliseo Rocamora Reputations once acquired are hard to shed. The stereotype of the Partai Nasional Indonesia (PNI) as an opportunist, conservative party composed of Javanese prijaji elements remains despite basic changes which occurred within the party in the later years of Guided Democracy. Tljis undifferentiated image of the PNI arose in the early 1950's and, for that time, it represented a fairly accurate, though limited, description. As the party began to change under the impetus of Guided Democracy politics and the push of internal party dynamics, Indonesian and foreign observers either disregarded the party alto­ gether or tended to seek explanations for these changes in outside factors." Thus, the PNI's "turn to the left," in the 1963 to 1965 period, was termed variously as: an opportunistic response to the increasingly leftist politics of Guided Democracy; the result of strong pressure from President Sukarno; or the work of PKI (Communist Party) infiltration of the party leadership. The fact that Djakarta's political cognoscenti-- journalists and intellectuals--continue to espouse and disseminate this interpreta­ tion reflects biases born of their own political attitudes and in­ volvement. A similarly-limited view of the PNI in Western academic literature is in part the result of the paucity of work on the Guided Democracy period and in part a consequence of an excessive concentra­ tion on a few actors at the center. The generally-accepted framework for analyzing Guided Democracy politics1--a three-sided triangle made up of Sukarno, the Army and the PKI--only explains certain facets of Indonesian politics, that is, the major battles for ideological and institutional predominance.
