Borecka Historical Note The history of Lubartów begins on May 29, 1543, when King Sigismund the Old+ allowed local nobleman Piotr Firlej to found a town called ''Lewartów'' (the original name comes from Lewart, the coat of arms of the Firlej family). From its foundation until World War II, the town also had a large Jewish community, numbering nearly half of the population in the 1930s. Nearly the entire community was destroyed during the Holocaust. Lubartów was a bilingual town for most of its history, Polish and Yiddish being both widely used. Polish was used among non‐Jews as well as for most communication between Jewish and non‐Jewish townspeople, while Yiddish was the everyday language of the town's Jewish inhabitants. Scope and Content of Collection Contains records of the administrative division of the city of Lubartów, Poland, relating to religious confessions; supervision of churches in the Lubartów area; addresses of Jews and Jewish property in Lubartów; Jewish refugees from the Pomerania and Poznan districts; displacement of the Jews from 2 http://collections.ushmm.org http://collections.ushmm.org Contact [email protected] for further information about this collection Lubartów to Ostrów and Parczew; and the imprisonment of all inhabitants of the village Palikije (community of Wojciechowka) in a penal camp. Nonetheless, there was a lack of information about making paper by hand in Central and Eastern Europe, as it was highlighted during discussions.1 This paper is aimed at connecting east central and east southern parts of Europe (i.e. without Russia and Nordic countries) to the international stream of development in European hand papermaking before introducing paper-making machines into countries of the discussed region of Europe. Wedding and coronation ceremonies of Anne of Austria and Sigismund III Vasa in 1592 ational and court ceremonies, which naturally include coronations and weddings of monarchs, have a long history Ndating back to the Middle Ages. The early modern era considerably developed and improved this tradition, granting it the suitable rank of a cultural as well as political event. It is difficult not to agree with the statement made by Albrycht Stanisław Radziwiłł on the essence of the royal marriage: ‘Małżeństwo zwykłych ludzi powstaje ze skłonności dusz, królów zaś dla zadowolenia poddanych’ [Marriage of ordinary people arises out of affection of souls, and that of kings for the contentment of the subjects]1. Apart from national (and family) functions of these events (funerals, coronations, weddings, births and christenings of children, etc.), these ceremonies were connected by another overriding idea, namely the willingness to show the power of the ruler and stability of his country. Due to mass participation in celebrating different events, members of the society could express their dedication to the dynasty and respect for it, which undoubtedly integrated the given community. They regulated the relations between honey hunters and their superiors as well as between honey hunters themselves. These legal norms not only provided protection of the honey hunt- ers’ rights and possessions, but also regulated various aspects of their vocational activities. This article attempts to compile and to produce a comprehensive survey of the sources (fontes iuris oriundi) of the Polish honey hunting law. For that purpose, a distinction needs to be made between honey hunting law sensu largo and sensu stricto. The former category encompasses all of the laws concerning honey hunters, whereas the latter refers to regulatory laws of honey hunters’ communities. The earliest legal rules concerning honey harvesting are of medieval origin. For instance, customary norms concerning bee theft and the ownership of bee swarms can be found in Księga Elbląska (The Book of Elbląg, the oldest extant code of Polish customary law, dating back to the 13th–14th century) and in the 14th- -century Statutes of Casimir the Great (which, among others, sets a penalty for destroying trees with beehives). The presence of such provisions indicates the prevalence of honey harvesting in medieval Poland.

Grain, Stone, and Red Velvet: The Material Assemblages of a City on the Vistula River in Poland, c. 1555 – c. 1655 by Katarzyna Jakobiec A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Katarzyna Jakobiec 2014 Grain, Stone, and Red Velvet: The Material Assemblages of a City on the Vistula River in Poland, c. 1555 – c. 1655 Katarzyna Jakobiec Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto 2014 Abstract This dissertation examines Kazimierz Dolny, a city situated at the geo-political center of the vast Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth within a time span of approximately one hundred years, 1550- 1655. During this time the city became a significant mercantile port due to its location on the Vistula River – the main trade route in early modern Poland. The merchants of Kazimierz Dolny oversaw the storage of grain and its export to Gdańsk, a commodity that was then shipped to other Baltic and North Sea ports. From this exchange, the merchants made significant financial gains that were channeled into the renovation of their city. Their investments included private stone-constructed granaries and ornamented residences, as well as public commissions such as churches and chapels. This thesis considers the ways in which mercantile networks and the movement of goods shaped a distinct material world. ii Acknowledgments The moment I stopped treating this dissertation as my arch nemesis and started embracing its imperfections, a change took place; by being kind to it and to myself, I brought this project to completion.
