M. Laeis (2019) Abstract Tourism is an economic backbone for many developing countries, especially small island development states (SIDS). Nevertheless, scholars have argued that tourism is a global- ising and, potentially, colonising force that may not be a sustainable path for the economic and cultural development of such countries. Even though international tourist numbers are growing, economic leakages are high in developing countries. This is partly due to a significant share of food being imported for tourists, despite local food production. Re- search on the impediments of agriculture-tourism linkages in developing countries has so far taken mostly an economistic approach, finding a variety of supply, demand, marketing and policy related factors. To allow for a more holistic approach, this study takes a cul- tural perspective and investigates how the cuisine of large-scale, upmarket tourist resorts shapes agricultural development in SIDS, such as Fiji. Sahlins’ (1992) theory of cultural change is combined with the corporate community development framework (Banks, Scheyvens, McLennan, & Bebbington, 2016) to explore the agency of Fijians in negoti- ating the impact of Western-dominated tourism. This study employed ethnographic methods in a case study approach during a four-month field trip to Fiji. Participation and observation in a resort kitchen, field visits to other resorts, farms and food intermediaries, 38 interviews as well as document analysis ena- bled a rich representation of local viewpoints on food, culture and tourism. Large-scale resorts present Fijian cuisine either in the form of tokenistic ‘island night shows’, or in fusion concepts that cater to a few affluent guests. Fijian chefs rarely perceive their own cuisine as valuable, due to decades of Western-dominated tourism. The use of local pro- duce is accordingly low and purposeful development of tourism-agriculture linkages is rare. Farmers, on the other hand, recognise resorts as a valuable market. Nevertheless, many Indo-Fijian farmers turn towards food exporters as a more reliable and predictable business partner. Indigenous food producers engage only to a degree that they deem val- uable for their own socio-cultural needs and goals. Findings suggest that small-scale re- sorts, catering to niche markets, might be more conducive to local integration and sus- tainable tourism development. Policy-wise, developing the agricultural agenda of SIDS to match the requirements of Western diets might have environmentally and socially det- rimental implications. ii Acknowledgements To all participants in Fiji who have so generously taken their time to share their thoughts on food, culture, tourism, farming and development in Fiji, especially the entire team of the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort: this work is dedicated to you all. The Ocean Road is a contemporary literary novel which tells the story of the Smart family, a ragtag bunch of smokers and drinkers who fight too much and spend too much time together. Their story runs alongside a parallel story, the unpublished manuscript, which is set in Adelaide and Melbourne in 1938, 1972 and 1986 and which outlines the struggles and stories of people who, it might be said, are aspiring to the level of working class enjoyed by the Smart family. The story set in 1938 describes an Aboriginal couple, Jack and Margery, and what they do to try to survive.

We are one of the most egalitarian cultures in the world, and our national values of ‘mateship and the right to a fair go’ clearly attest to that. What other country in the world takes their equality so seriously that they routinely refer to their Prime Minister by their first name? These core national values therefore bind us together as a society through a common belief in equality, justice and, above all, fairness. This innate sense of fairness is in reality the foundation of our tolerance and inclusiveness as a society. However the word multiculturalism does not do us justice as a descriptor of our society and culture. It is a word that does not have any real depth of meaning as a theory of society. In reality is just a popular and rather vacuous buzz-word. There are four serious problems attaching to the indiscriminate application of the word multiculturalism. First, multiculturalism implies that cultural or ethnic background is the prime determinant of our individual identity. As some well known Australians such as Noel Pearson and Stan Grant have said, our identities are multi-layed. We are therefore defined by the totality of these layers, not just our claimed or percieved ethnicity. In a plural multi-group society such as Australia, we freely associate with others on the basis of common interest.

The terms "Venus envy" and "academic inferiority complex" are used based on classical psychoanalytic jargon. Jordan Peterson and Slavoj Žižek are interpreted as the representatives of the opposing ends of our contemporary academic postmodern spectrum. Žižek demonstrates the unchained Marxist, and Peterson embodies the persona of the capitalist educator. This article is a gateway to the demonstration of the decaying core of post-modern ideology in contemporary academic discourse. Keywords: Žižek, Peterson, Academia, Postmodernism, Ideology, Inferiority Complex In 1971 the world of philosophy trespassed a new milestone with the Chomsky and Foucault debate. The two disciples of different schools of thought clashed into one another, offering the future generation of intellectuals a popcorn-demanding hour of intense introspection. 48 years had gallantly passed when another edition of this debate took the philosophical world by surprise. As continental philosopher and Marxist theorist, Slavoj Žižek sat opposite to clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson. In less than 3 consecutive hours humanity was given a new framework. I argue that the debate became a portrayal of not only contradicting ideologies, but also the paradoxical projection of a conundrum that has flooded academia for the past century. I entitle this epiphenomenal indication as the “Academic Inferiority Complex” based on Sigmund Freud’s initial analysis of the predominant social subordination that psychologically manifests itself.1 In literary analysis, this occurrence is entitled the “cultural cringe,”2 where the colonized are indoctrinated to believe that they are subordinates to the colonizer’s culture.

Is modernism an artifact of the past, to be studied from an ever-increas- ing distance, or is it an ongoing cultural project that one can still experi- ence firsthand? Although the defining characteristic of modernist studies since the Modernist Studies Association’s foundation has been a dramatic expansion of the field, few would argue that modernist art is still being produced. That, however, is what Nathan Myhrvold, formerly Microsoft’s chief technology officer, Chris Young, and Maxime Bilet claim in their tour de force cookbook Modernist Cuisine (2011). Developed over five years and aided by a team of chefs lead by Young and Bilet, the book sprawls over 2,400 pages, amasses six volumes, weighs forty pounds—and retails for $625.1 Modernist Cuisine is as much manifesto as cookbook, aiming not only to document the scientific cuisine of chefs like molecular gastronomy pioneer Ferran Adrià as well as Heston Blumenthal and Grant Achatz but also to instruct both professional and home cooks in the adoption of these techniques.
