THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP

November 29, 2020 - First Sunday of Advent

WE GATHER IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD

*Please Stand in Body or in Spirit

“I truly believe that if we keep telling the Christmas story, singing the Christmas songs, and living the Christmas spirit, we can bring joy and happiness and peace to this world."~ Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993), American Protestant religious leader, author.

Prelude “We3” Nicole Pesce, pianist; Suzanne Lansford, violinist; Renee Grant Patrick, vocalist

Welcome and Announcements

(Please fill in the yellow attendance slip enclosed in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate)

*Call to Worship (Responsive) Rev. Sheryl Campbell

As we begin this Advent Season, we come before God to remember the Promised One who came to a people who waited in faith. There are times when we wait in the darkness for God to come. In the darkness a candle is lit and the light comforts our waiting. The light reminds us of the One Who has come and is to come again.

*Hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” #9, Blue Hymnal

O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear.

Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.

2

O Come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Refrain

O come, Desire of nations, bind All peoples in one heart and mind; Bid envy, strife, and discord cease; Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.

Refrain

Blessing of the Advent Wreath (Responsive) Rev. Mike Campbell

Christ came to bring us salvation and has promised to come again. Let us pray that we may always be ready to welcome Him: That the keeping of Advent may open our hearts to God's love. That the light of Christ may penetrate the darkness of sin. That this wreath may constantly remind us to prepare for the coming of Christ And Who will lead us into the light of God’s glorious Kingdom.

Advent Candle Lighting Ray and Judie Larson

Advent is a time for the human heart to wait, while trusting God’s eternal time. How long, O Lord, how long? For those waiting for answered prayer: Grant your steadfast patience. For those waiting in the face of uncertainty. Grant unshakable confidence in your Sovereign provision. For those waiting for justice and mercy to reign. Grant a glimpse of Your glory in our wounded world. For all of us waiting for God’s Kingdom to come. Grant that we might have the peace of Christ as we wait, the love of Christ as we act, and the grace of Christ as we speak.

This morning we light the FIRST CANDLE which reminds us that throughout history, God’s people have spent time waiting, wandering and wondering about the timing of God’s eternal plan. Like the people of old, we long for God’s presence to illuminate the areas of life where we are called to wait. This morning we echo the words of the Psalmist, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14)

Closing Prayer

God of all creation, we declare that You are the eternal One. We confess to You, O Lord, that we easily grow impatient, when Your Word to us is to wait. Ignite within us a new and everlasting hope. We pray this in the name of Christ, our Lord. Amen.

WE LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD

Prayer for Illumination Rev. Sheryl Campbell

We call out to You O God, and listen for Your Word. Your Word is Your very presence among us. We will listen, we will seek, and we will find that You are calling to us as we are calling to You. Amen.

This is The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Special Music “Some Day at Christmas” Renee Grant Patrick

Someday at Christmas men won't be boys playing with bombs like kids play with toys. One warm December our hearts will see a world where men are free. Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars when we have learned what Christmas is for. When we have found what life's really worth there'll be peace on earth. Someday all our dreams will come to be, someday in a world where men are free. Maybe not in time for you and me but someday at Christmastime. Someday at Christmas we'll see a land with no hungry children, no empty hand. One happy morning people will share our world where people care. Someday at Christmas there'll be no tears when all men are equal and no man has fears one shining moment, one prayer away from our world today. Someday at Christmas man will not fail, hate will be gone and love will prevail. Someday a new world that we can start with hope in every heart. (Written by songwriters and Bryan Wells. first recorded it in 1966)

Pastoral Prayer Rev. Mike Campbell

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in Heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Invitation to Serve God in the Church and the World

God’s love for us is unconditional. We give unconditionally in gratitude and for the privilege of providing for Christ’s mission on earth with our time, talent and treasure.

Offering to the Lord

Offertory

*Doxology (Sung to Old 100th)

“Hope in the God who reigns above, Who holds us all in steadfast love. Whose Spirit blows across the earth, Preparing us for second birth. Amen.”

6

*Prayer of Dedication (Unison)

Accept O God these gifts, the portion You have asked us to give as a sign of our trust in You and our hope in Your promises. Receive these offerings, our free gift of gratitude for all that You have done. Bless them in Your work in which life triumphs over death and light over darkness. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.

“Emmanuel”

“Emmanuel, Emmanuel, His name is called, Emmanuel. God with us, revealed in us, His name is called Emmanuel.”

*Benediction

Live your lives this week blessed by the knowledge that you are shaped by the hand of God, enriched by the grace of Jesus Christ and kept alert by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We thank We3: Pianist Nicole Pesce, violinist Suzanne Lansford, and vocalist Renee Grant Patrick. We3 performed their first concert together in October 2016 at the Nash in downtown Phoenix. An undeniable chemistry was recognized, and the group continued to perform sold out shows at the Music Instrument Museum and Phoenix Theatre (New Outdoor Stage) along with recording their first full length CD, “We’ll Meet Again”. They also have a new CD, “A We3 Christmas”. www.we3music.com 7
