Sinking the Titanic: The Iceberg and its Minimalist Implications In Raymond Carver's Fiction Senior Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For a Degree Bachelor of Arts with A Major in Literature at The University of North Carolina at Asheville Spring 2006 By John Mozley Thesis Reader Deborah James Thesis Advisor Cynn Chadwick Mozley 1 When Raymond Carver died in 1988 of lung cancer, Robert Gotlieb, the then editor of The New Yorker, stated, "America just lost the writer it could least afford to lose" (Max 36). In Carver's mere twenty-year publishing career, he garnered such titles as "the American Chekhov" (London Times), "the most imitated American writer since Hemingway" (Nesset 2), and "as successful as a short story writer in America can be" (Meyer 239). Carver's stories won the O. Henry Award three consecutive years, he was nominated for the National Book Award in 1977 for Will You Please Be Quiet Please?. won two NBA awards for fiction, received a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as the "Mildred and Harold Strauss Living Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters" (Saltzman 3), and his collection of stories, Cathedral was nominated for both National Book Critics Circle award and a Pulitzer Prize (Saltzman 3). Born in Oregon in 1938, Carver grew up in Yakima, Washington where his father worked in the sawmill. At twenty years old, Carver was married to his high school sweetheart, Maryanne, and had two children (Saltzman 1). Plagued by debt and escalating alcoholism, the Carvers moved to California where Raymond "worked a series of low-paying jobs, including deliveryman, gas station attendant and hospital janitor, while his wife waited tables and sold door to door" (1), his jobs also included "sawmill worker. -

Jack Zipes, When Dreams Came True Classical Fairy Tales and Their Tradition (2nd ed., New York, Routledge, 2007) Introduction—“Spells of Enchantment: An Overview of the History of Fairy Tales” adopts the usual Zipes position—fairy tales are strongly wish-fulfillment orientated, and there is much talk of humanity’s unquenchable desire to dream. “Even though numerous critics and psychologists such as C. G. Jung and Bruno Bettelheim have mystified and misinterpreted the fairy tale because of their own spiritual quest for universal archetypes or need to save the world through therapy, the oral and literary forms of the fairy tale have resisted the imposition of theory and manifested their enduring power by articulating relevant cultural information necessary for the formation of civilization and adaption to the environment…They emanate from specific struggles to humanize bestial and barbaric forces that have terrorized our minds and communities in concrete ways, threatening to destroy free will and human compassion. The fairy tale sets out, using various forms and information, to conquer this concrete terror through metaphors that are accessible to readers and listeners and provide hope that social and political conditions can be changed.’ pp.1-2 [For a writer rather quick to pooh-pooh other people’s theories, this seems quite a claim…] What the fairy tale is, is almost impossible of definition. Zipes talks about Vladimir Propp, and summarises him interestingly on pp.3-4, but in a way which detracts from what Propp actually said, I think, by systematizing it and reducing the element of narrator-choice which was central to Propp’s approach. -

Pain or joy, ecstasy.” - Barry Hannah Overview The purpose of Elements of Craft is to help fiction writers improve their writing by training them to actively engage with texts--to read as a writer, rather than as a reader. In this course, we will be reading and discussing six larger texts (mostly novels) and two packets of shorter texts (mostly short stories), and while we will be discussing all of the elements that make up a piece of narrative art--setting, dialogue, characterization--the main thrust of this particular Elements course is concerned with the examination of perhaps the two most important literary styles of the twentieth and twenty-first century. In one corner, we have Minimalism. Antonin Chekhov (1860-1904) is often considered the father of what we now consider minimalist prose style. Rather than use this space to launch into a theoretical thesis on what Minimalism is and is not (don't worry: we'll be doing plenty of that later), here are a few brief quotes from writers who wrote or have written in this vein: Joan Didion: "I had...a technical intention...to write a novel so elliptical and fast that it would be over before you noticed it, a novel so fast that it would scarcely exist on the page at all....white space. -

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote 364.152 On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. Five years, four months and twenty-nine days later, on April 14, 1965, Richard Eugene Hickock, aged thirty-three, and Perry Edward Smith, aged thirty-six, were hanged for the crime on a gallows in a warehouse in the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kansas. Post- modernistinen fiktio toisin sanoen tuhoaa, purkaa, rikkoo ja haastaa. Tämän kaltaiset ku- vaukset tyypittävät postmodernin kirjallisuuden ennen kaikkea reaktiiviseksi toiminnaksi. Kuitenkin postmoderni fiktio on ilmiönä moniselitteisempi ja laaja-alaisempi kuin yksin- kertaistavat luonnehdinnat antavat ymmärtää. Kandidaatintutkielmassani lähestyin ko. il- miötä tutkimalla yksittäistä, postmoderniksi luonnehdittavaa tekstiä. Amerikkalaiskirjailija Donald Barthelme on yksi postmodernistisen kirjallisuuden pionee- reista. Tämä tutkielma on analyysi hänen vuonna 1970 julkaisemastaan novellista ’At the Tolstoy Museum’. Tekstissä Barthelme parodioi venäläisen klassikkokirjailija Leo Tolstoin kirjallista ja kulttuurista perintöä. Tarkastelemalla Tolstoin representaatioita Barthelmen tekstissä tutkielma kartoitti Barthelmen suhdetta aikaisemman kirjallisuuden perintee- seen. Taustana tutkielmalle toimi joukko aikaisempia
