(2009). Overview of the geography of the Monte Desert biome (Argentina). En: Journal of Arid Environments, v. 73(2), pp. 144-153. The compilation of published results on the geography of the Monte Desert biome of Argentina that we present here offers a review of its boundaries and ecotones, and of its biophysical and socio-economic characteristics. In relation to socio- ecological issues, the focus is on a case study in the province of Mendoza. An analysis is presented about the ecological-economic issues and the sustainable in- vestment policies in rangelands of the Patagonian Monte. In addition, this biome is compared with other South American arid biomes and their North American coun- terparts. We identified some gaps in the current knowledge, especially at a mesoscale level, where studies on Monte borders are deemed necessary as well as explicit boundary criteria for ecosystem differentiation. Also the ecological- economic relations and feedbacks between livestock herbivory, soil erosion and market behaviour should be considered within the framework of wider socio- ecological research. En: Journal of Arid Environments, v. 91(1), pp. 113–118. Due to high temporal variation of soil organic matter in arid regions, estimates of annual sequestered C might be overestimate. We assessed the soil stable organic matter (humic substances) in the transitional area between Dry Chaco and Monte eco-regions in western Argentina, as an approach to estimate realistic soil C sink. Soil samples were taken during wet and dry seasons in four sites along precipita- tion gradient. In each site three soil cover situations (under tree, under shrubs and on bare soils) were sampled (n = 5) and the quantity and type of residues (tree and shrub leaves, woody material, grasses and forbs) were recorded. Soil organic mat- ter and humic substances (humic and fulvic acids) content were analyzed and non- humic substances were calculated by the differences between organic matter and humic substances. Soil humic substance proportion respect to SOM was low (20%) in all sites and it did not correspond with the precipitation gradient. Non-humic sub- stances were lower in wet season indicating high C lability. The most important fac- tors that affected soil humic substance content were the type and quantity of or- ganic residues and soil cover type. Our results suggest that previous C sink esti- mations in Argentina dry forest probably are overestimated. Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of soil fertility in the Central Monte desert (Argentina). En: Journal of Arid Environments, v. 73(10), pp. 901–906. In arid environments, soil fertility exhibits a high degree of spatial and temporal heterogeneity, which results from high climatic variability seasonally and heteroge- neous plant distribution. However, because most desert areas have been altered by human activities, heterogeneous fertility would originate from grazing or logging activities. We evaluated spatial and temporal heterogeneity of soil fertility in cattle- excluded sites under and outside woody plant cover (Prosopis flexuosa and Larrea divaricata), and in sites disturbed by tree removal during wet and dry season in Ñacuñán Biosphere Reserve (Central Monte desert of Argentina). Soil organic mat- ter, fulvic acids, bioavailable organic matter, and nitrate were lower outside plant canopy (8.9 mg g−1, 0.03 mg g−1, 8.2 mg g−1, and 4.17 mg kg−1, respectively). Total N, humic acids, and abundance of microbial functional groups did not show differ- ences among sites. Most parameters differed between seasons, tending to be higher in the wet season. Overall soils of Ñacuñán Reserve are characterized by: a) more homogenous spatial pattern than expected from woody plant presence; b) very heterogeneous temporal pattern; and c) after two years, tree removal does not seem to induce infertile soil formation.

Of this total, 51% is characterised as arable land, 16% as forest, 4% as permanent pasture and other grazing land, and 29% as degraded land unsuitable for cultivation. The eco-climate of the country varies from extreme arid to super humid. The arid and semi-arid regions together constitute over 40% of the country’s total land surface and are spread over ten States (Table 1). The climatic conditions in these areas do not support much growth and regeneration of plant species. Consequently, the vegetation is quite sparse. The forest cover in arid and semi-arid tracts of India varies from 1 to 10%. Furthermore, the forests in these regions are not species rich. Table 1. Extent of arid and semi-arid regions in India. Trees in the farming systems of arid and semi-arid tracts supply considerable amounts of timber, fuel and fodder. However, with ever increasing human and livestock population pressure during the last half century, deforestation has reached an alarming stage.

Abstract: Twig girdlers have a short adult life and a long larval stage (up to one year in some species). This fact, together with lack of morphological traits to identify the species from the larval stage, poses obstacles for the taxonomic identification and characterization of the many twig girdlers found in the wild. To solve this matter, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers have been applied to identify some insect species and to determine species boundaries. The aim of this study was to identify three species of Oncideres using the RAPD technique.

Previous papers have mostly described Titanus morphology or taxonomy, but studies concerning its anatomy and physiology are largely absent. Thus, we employed microscopic, physiological, and analytical methods to partially fill this gap. Our study focused on a detailed analysis of the antennal sensilla, where coeloconic sensilla, grouped into irregularly oval fields, and sensilla trichoidea were found. Further, the inspection of the internal organs showed apparent degeneration of the gut and almost total absence of fat body. The gut was already empty; however, certain activity of digestive enzymes was recorded.
