Fish Fry Fridays 18 T HE S PIRIT P A G E 2

Grand Knight’s Message Anyone hungry? How about some...fish? Lent is here and that means our Council is once again hosting Fish Fry Fridays in the St. John’s Assembly Room and gym. One of the last things we did as a Council before February ended was hold our first Fish Fry of the year. We had a good turnout, and lots of help! Thank you to all of those that helped, I know Obie Obregon surely appreciated the help on his first night as the Fish Fry chairman. So, why no meat on Friday during lent? The answer should be obvious. Abstaining from meat is a penance im- posed by the Church to commemorate the day of the Crucifixion of Our Lord. But, are you aware that the Fri- day abstinence rule is still in effect throughout the entire year? Technically, The the consumption of meat is allowed only if some other sacrifice or good work was substituted in its place. Well now. What sort of penance have you been doing since last year’s Lent? I guess praying the Stations of the Cross, saying extra Rosaries, or some other additional similar offering are in my future if I want that big ol’ juicy burger on Friday once Lent is over. Did you know that the Catholic practice of abstaining from meat on Friday was the reason for the creation of McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish sandwich? Because hamburger sales dropped off noticeably on Fridays, the owner of the franchise in Cincinnati introduced the new offering, and sales picked up again. Wow! When do you think we as Catholics had so much influence on society since then? The answer is every day! The way in which we choose to live our lives as Catholic gentlemen, and whether we choose to be firm in our convictions, can be influential. Imagine if all Catholics voted the same way on the issue of abortion, whether Republican or Democrat. Pick your issue. If Catholics acted as one, think of the possibilities! Oh, but think how “boring” life would be if we really lived out our Catholic faith. Do you think the most recent Superbowl halftime show would have occurred if modesty were more important than the so-called ‘dancing’ we saw? Television would be Hallmark Channel 24/7. College spring break would pale in comparison to today’s version. I could go on and on, and I’m sure you could come up with some examples of your own. The point is, we Catholics have become more tolerant of things that would have been seen as scandalous a few as 25 years ago. Tolerance has led to acceptance, and even to normalization of certain behaviors or actions. For example, when married couples felt they could not continue in their marriage, they divorced, but their divorce was done quietly so as to avoid scandal. Over the years, as more and more couples divorced, the break-up of marriages became less scandalous. Today, I’ve seen plenty of examples of young adults living together without getting married, as they don’t seem to understand marriage’s significance in society, or perhaps it’s just they fear commitment. I’ve seen that in my extended family and with co-workers. This month, as we move through Lent preparing ourselves for Easter, the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, most of us will be focused on giving up something we “can’t live without” as a Lenten sacrifice. Giving up that cup of Starbucks or your favorite chocolate is admirable, and can be a difficult proposition. However, rather than focusing on giving up something as a self-sacrifice, where do you think society would be if we actually lived out our Catholic faith more ardently? What do you think you can do for penance for eating meat on Fridays outside of Lent? Could it be something personal like reading up on your Catholic faith, or something more open like volunteering at some parish minis- try activity? Whatever you choose, I can almost guarantee you’ll get more out of your experience than what you put in. I’ve heard it said that Sundays are mini Easters. Although we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday, we do so each weekend at mass. If we commemorate Easter every Sunday, then wouldn't every Friday be like Good Friday? Abstaining from meat on every Friday would serve to pre- pare us each week for Jesus’ resurrection. It would be a good thing for our souls to prepare each week as we do each Lent. Tempus fugit, memento mori. Vivat Jesus! SK Mike Dellies, Grand Knight

NEW EXEMPLICIATION CEREMONY Beginning this month, there will be a new exemplification ceremony to replace the First Degree and Major De- gree Ceremonies. The new ceremony will still incorporate a significant amount of the previous content, but will no longer be ‘secret’ and is open to all family members. Watch for more details as we get farther into the new calendar year. T HE S PIRIT P A G E 3

CANNON LAW: ABSTINENCE CHAPTER II, Days of Penance Can. 1249 The divine law binds all the Christian faithful to do penance each in his or her own way. In order for all to be united among themselves by some common observance of penance, however, penitential days are prescribed on which the Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by fulfilling their own obligations more faithfully and especially by observing fast and abstinence, according to the norm of the following canons. Can. 1250 The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent. Can. 1251 Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance. Can. 1253 The conference of bishops can determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence as well as substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety, in whole or in part, for abstinence and fast. US Religious Freedom Commission calls India riots 'brutal and unchecked violence'

Washington D.C., Feb 27, 2020 / 02:00 pm (CNA).- The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has called on the Indian government to halt ongoing anti-Muslim vio- lence in Delhi, home of India's capital. Approximately 27 people have been killed and more than 200 were injured in a series of riots in northeastern Delhi that began on Sunday. The riots started over a new citizenship law which forbids Muslim immigrants from obtaining Indian citizenship. The BBC reported that Hindu mobs targeted un- armed people, and both Hindus and Muslims have been killed in the ensuing violence. “The brutal and unchecked violence growing across Delhi cannot continue. The Indian government must take swift action to ensure the safety of all its citizens,” said USCIRF Commissioner Anurima Bhargava in a statement re- leased Wednesday. Jan 5, 2020 Barricades of Delhi Police on Parliament Street. Credit: Nomad- ness/Shutterstock Bhargava cited reports that police in Delhi have allowed riots to continue and said that the Indian government “is failing in its duty to protect its citizens.” “These incidents are even more concerning in the context of efforts within India to target and potentially disen- franchise Muslims across the country, in clear violation of international human rights standards.” About 14% of India’s population is Muslim. The country is approximately 80% Hindu. Tony Perkins, chairman of the USCIRF, echoed Bhargava’s concerns, and said that the “reported attacks against Muslims, their homes and ships, and their houses of worship are greatly disturbing.” Perkins said the Indian government was facing a test of the basic functions of responsible leadership. “One of the essential duties of any responsible government is to provide protection and physical security for its citizens, regardless of faith. We urge the Indian government to take serious efforts to protect Muslims and oth- ers targeted by mob violence,” he said Wednesday. President Donald Trump visited India this week. While in the country, he hosted a rally and met with the coun- try’s prime minister, Narendra Modi. Modi, the leader of the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, said in December, 2019, that the new citizenship bill was not anti-Muslim. In the USCIRF’s 2019 Annual Report, India was listed as a “Tier 2” country, designating it as a country with at least some “systemic, ongoing, egregious standard” of religious-based discrimination that would merit a country being labeled a “country of particular concern.” The commission’s report said India's “history of religious freedom has come under attack in recent years with the growth of exclusionary extremist narratives—including, at times, the government’s allowance and encour- agement of mob violence against religious minorities—that have facilitated an egregious and ongoing campaign of violence, intimidation, and harassment against non-Hindu and lower-caste Hindu minorities. Both public and private actors have engaged in this campaign.”

Papal nuncio to speak at meeting of US priests who back homosexuality, female ordina- tion Archbishop Christophe Pierre is set to attend the meeting of the dissident Associa- tion of US Catholic Priests in June.

By: Martin Bürger | LifeSiteNews.com | Feb 18, 2020 The Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, will be speaking at the meeting of a dissident priest group, the Association of US Catholic Priests (AUSCP), in June of this year. The group openly promotes ho- mosexuality and female ordination. The archbishop has refused to comment on his presence at the meeting. Among other things, the AUSCP is in favor of married priests and women’s ordination. In the past, the AUSCP has hosted progressive members of the Archbishop Christophe Pierre, papal hierarchy like Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and Bishop Robert McElroy of nuncio to the United States of America. San Diego. Michael Hichborn, president of the Lepanto Institute, asked the nuncio in December 2019 for comment on his scheduled presence at the assembly of the AUSCP, but never received a reply. “You may not be aware, but the AUSCP is a gravely dissident organization which promotes homosexuality, asso- ciates with organizations that promote same-sex ‘marriage,’ supports open homosexuality in the priesthood, has undermined the authority and decisions made by bishops, and has endorsed the ordination of women to the priesthood,” Hichborn pointed out in his letter to the Apostolic Nuncio, who acts as the ambassador of the Vati- can to the government of the United States of America. Hichborn included some of his research on the AUSCP in his letter. He has a receipt showing that the nunciature received his letter. “I am providing this information to you in the hope that you will reconsider your participation in the AUSCP’s assembly next spring, as your participation would not only raise the profile of this organization, but give the impression that it was one which bears the support and approval of the . I cannot stress enough how confusing and damaging to the souls of the faithful such an impression could be,” the president of the Lepanto Institute argued. He encouraged the nuncio to refuse attending the AUSCP event in Maryland. “If I do not hear from you in sixty days, I will assume that your response to my plea is in the negative,” Hichborn added in his letter. After 60 days had passed, Hichborn published his letter to the nuncio. LifeSiteNews reached out for comment to the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, DC, but did not receive an answer. Founded in 2011, the AUSCP advances a number of controversial positions. On its website, the organization states its goal of encouraging “the American bishops to petition the Pope to change the present law requiring celibacy of all Roman Catholic priests by opening ordination to married men of proven quality (viri probati).” Only recently, Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, explained that allowing married priests would be a mistake. “We are often victims of a profound historical ignorance on this subject. The Church had married priests during the first centuries. But as soon as they were ordained, they were required to abstain completely from sexual relations with their wives,” Sarah told the National Catholic Register. “If a priest is married, then he has a private life, a conjugal and family life. He must make time for his wife and children. He is unable to show, by his whole life, that he is totally and absolutely given to God and the Church,” the cardinal cautioned.

In 2013, the AUSCP passed a resolution to promote the ongoing discussion of the ordination of women as perma- nent deacons and “agreed to ask the US bishops to give public support to the restoration of the first millennium practice of ordaining women as permanent deacons.” Last October, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, affirmed that Pope John Paul II had closed the door to women’s ordination in his 1994 Apostolic Let- ter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis. “The impossibility that a woman validly receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders in each of the three degrees is a truth contained in Revelation and it is thus infallibly confirmed by the Church's Magisterium and presented as to be believed,” Müller argued. The three degrees of the sacrament of Holy Orders refer to deacon, priest, and bishop. If women cannot validly receive the sacrament, they cannot validly be ordained to any of its degrees, including the diaconate. In its declaration on the status of women in the Church, published in 2019, the AUSCP accused the Church of keeping “ecclesial structures that maintain outmoded philosophical notions of nature, gender, and personhood. Rules, fixed order, dogmatic formulas, unyielding laws, patriarchy, authority, and obedience have rendered the Church resistant to the radical interconnectivity that marks all levels of nature. The Church is bound to die out unless the system undergoes radical transformation. Thus, the institutional Church needs to consider the evolv- ing insights of science and the universe.” Contact information: Archbishop Christophe Pierre Apostolic Nunciature 3339 Massachusetts Ave NW Washington, DC 20008-3610 Phone: 202-333-7121 Email: [email protected]

Pete Buttigieg: Scripture Doesn’t Condone Trump’s Behav- ior But It Does Support Abortion

STEVEN ERTELT FEB 19, 2020 | 12:04PM WASHINGTON, DC Pete Buttigieg continues to misrepresent the Bible in support of his presiden- tial campaign. During a campaign stop on Tuesday night, the Indiana mayor claimed Biblical Scripture doesn’t condone President Trump’s combative behavior as president but he still believes the Bible somehow supports killing babies in abortions. Daily Wire has more on what Buttigieg said: On Tuesday night, former South Bend, Indiana, mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said he can’t understand how any Christian would support President Donald Trump, suggesting there is no The Golden Dome atop the Main Building at the University of Notre “compatibility” there. Dame. Credit: RebeccaDLev / Shutter- stock . “Do you think it is impossible to be a Christians and support this presi- dent?” CNN’s Erin Burnett, serving as moderator, asked Buttigieg. “I’m not gonna tell other Christians how to be Christians,” the former mayor responded. “But, I will say, I cannot find any compatibility between the way this president conducts himself and anything I find in scrip- ture.” (Continued on Page 9) T HE S PIRIT P A G E 9

But when it comes to the issue of abortion, Buttigieg definitely needs some basic Biblical education as he has re- peatedly insisted that he can be a Christian and support abortion on demand. He has repeatedly tried to justify his stance by claiming the Bible associates “the beginning of life with breath.” Buttigieg said he believes the Bible does not recognize the beginning of life until the first breath is taken. “There’s so many parts of the Bible that associate the beginning of life with breath,” he said, reiterating a similar statement he made in September. At the time, he told “The Breakfast Club” that abortion “is obviously a tough issue for a lot of people to think through morally. Then again, there’s a lot of parts of the Bible that talk about how life begins with breath, and so even that is something that we can interpret differently.” Buttigieg’s biblical justification for abortion has been called out as absurd by his own family and many others. Even in ancient times, babies in the womb were viewed as valuable, as is evident in Luke 1:41. Jesus placed great value on children when others in society did not in Matthew 19:14, and Proverbs 6:16-17 states that one of the things God hates most is the shedding of innocent blood. One of the ten commandments prohibits murder. The Daily Wire also noticed Buttigieg’s Biblical misunderstanding: Buttigieg, who is openly gay, has advocated for abortion up until the moment of birth. Earlier this month, while appearing on “The View,” the Democrat refused to denounce the murder of the unborn post-birth, or infanticide. A host of Bible verses make it clear that the Bible, and the Lord God, value life in the womb: “Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward” (Psalm 127:3) “You knit me in my mother’s womb . . . nor was my frame unknown to you when I was made in secret” (Psalm 139:13,15) “You have been my guide since I was first formed . . . from my mother’s womb you are my God” (Psalm 22:10- 11). “God… from my mother’s womb had set me apart and called me through his grace” (St. Paul to the Galatians 1:15) “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 5:17) (Continued on Page 10)

(“Pro-Life” from Page 9)

“You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimo- ny.” (Matthew 19:18) “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jeremiah 1:5) Buttigieg is no moderate on abortion. As mayor of South Bend, he tried to stop a pregnancy resource center from opening down the street from an abortion facility. Then, earlier this year, he celebrated when an abortion chain that amassed dozens of health and safety violations opened a new location there. In May, when asked about abortions in the third trimester, Buttigieg said he thinks they should be legal and un- restricted.

Texas City Approves Resolution Declaring Human Life Begins at Conception

MICAIAH BILGER FEB 19, 2020 | 7:20PM LINDALE, TEXAS human life begins at conception and Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Tyler Morning Telegraph reports the Lindale City Council passed the reso- lution after local residents urged them to pass a stronger pro-life ordi- nance declaring their city to be a sanctuary for the unborn. An ordinance is a municipal government law or regulation. A resolution is a statement of support or opposition, but it is not legally enforceable. According to the report, the Lindale resolution recognizes that human life begins at conception and supports laws that allow state and local govern- Woman grabbing fence. Stock image ments to protect unborn babies. It also urges state and federal lawmakers to protect unborn babies and asks the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. While it is good that the city council did something to recognize the atrocity of abortion, several pro-life leaders and local residents expressed disappointment that they did not do more. Right to Life of East Texas director Mark Lee Dickson has been leading the effort to pass Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances in cities across Texas. So far, 12 have done so. Prior to the vote Tuesday, Dickson and a number of Lindale residents urged the council to approve the or- dinance and protect the unborn. According to the local news: During public forum, Lindale resident Joyce Rhodes told the council she finds abortion appalling and had to be vocal for the unborn. “I have come to truly love Lindale,” Rhodes said. “I stand proudly for the unborn.” Matt Myer, a Wells city councilman, said his city passed the ordinance to protect the unborn despite the possibility of lawsuits. He urged the Lindale City Council to pass the ordinance as well. Speaking to the council for the third time, Paul Fancher said he worked with a group to stop abortion at the state level, but it didn’t work out. He’s working with Right to Life of East Texas to stop the practice at a city level. “I am genuinely afraid people are going to face God’s judgment,” he said. “I am concerned with the laws of God. I am here in a legal capacity. I will continue to protect unborn children regardless if this ordinance passes.”

(More Pro-Life on Page 11) T HE S PIRIT P A G E 11

(“Pro-Life” from Page 10)

However, city attorney Glen Patrick advised against the ordinance, saying it could be challenged in court and ruled unconstitutional, according to the report. The Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances recognize that unborn babies are valuable human beings who de- serve to be protected under the law. They prohibit abortions within city limits and prevent abortion businesses from opening there. The ordinances also penalize abortionists for aborting unborn babies, but they do not pe- nalize women who seek or have abortions. “The people of Lindale asked their city council to pass an ordinance that would effectively outlaw abortion,” Dickson said after the vote Tuesday. “Instead of doing this, the city council passed a resolution of words instead of an ordinance of action.” Dickson told LifeNews previously that the ordinance takes legal challenges into account. He said it has “a public enforcement mechanism and a private enforcement mechanism. The public enforcement mechanism is about future enforcement.” He said the public enforcement part fines abortionists $2,000 per abortion, but the penalty only would be en- forced when Roe v. Wade is overturned. “In other words, if you break the law today, you could be penalized for that crime years from now,” Dickson said. “The private enforcement mechanism does not have to wait upon the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and is in effect immediately. This part of the ordinance is about private lawsuits. When a child is killed by abortion, the family of that child … can sue the abortionist, the one who paid for the abortion, the one who drove the mother to the abortion, etc.” Earlier this month, the city of Wells in eastern Texas became the 12th Sanctuary City for the Unborn. Others include Big Spring in West Texas, Rusk, Waskom, Naples, Joaquin, Tenaha, Gilmer and Westbrook. Omaha also passed an ordinance but later retracted it and passed a non-enforceable resolution instead. In other states, local government leaders have passed pro-life resolutions in response to growing pro-abortion radicalism. In 2019, Roswell, New Mexico city leaders passed a pro-life resolution after state lawmakers consid- ered a radical pro-abortion bill to expand late-term abortions. The bill narrowly failed to pass. In New York state, Batavia city leaders and Putnam County legislators also passed resolutions condemning a rad- ical new pro-abortion law in their state and supporting protections for the unborn. Also in 2019, the Riverton City Council in Utah passed a similar resolution, declaring the city a “sanctuary for the unborn.” The Utah County Commission unanimously voted in favor of a resolution supporting protections for unborn babies. The council in Highland, Utah and the city of Springdale, Arkansas also approved pro-life resolu- tions last summer. Senators respond to defeat of pro-life bills

By Kate Scanlon Washington D.C., Feb 29, 2020 / 09:00 am (CNA).- Two pieces of pro-life leg- islation failed to overcome a Democratic filibuster this week—but two pro-life senators said the bills forced debate on a vital subject. The Pain-Capable Unborn-Child Protection Act, introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R- S.C.), would have banned elective abortions after five months, the point at which science suggests an unborn child can feel pain. The Born- Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, introduced by Sen. Ben Sasse (R- Neb.), would have required that a child who survives a botched abortion at- Sen. Ben Sasse. Teich/Shutterstock Although both bills received majority support, they each failed to reach the 60-vote threshold required to pro- ceed. Three Democratic senators—Sens. Doug Joes, Bob Casey, and Joe Manchin—broke with their party to sup- port the Born-Alive bill. Casey and Manchin also voted in support of the Pain-Capable Bill, while Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against it. (Continued on Page 12) T HE S PIRIT P A G E 12

(“Pro-Life” from Page 11) Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), an original co-sponsor of both the Pain-Capable and Born-Alive bills, told EWTN Pro- Life Weekly on Thursday that passing these pieces of legislation would have been a “great step forward.” Ernst noted that contrary to some arguments from pro-choice senators, the Born-Alive bill would not restrict abortion procedures. “These are living, breathing, babies that are born,” Ernst said. “They are born alive. And so they are outside of the mother’s womb. They are babies, and they should be cared for.” Ernst argued that both bills are in the interest of women as well as the unborn. “I would say that every woman, every girl, regardless of age, in the womb, to an old, old age, every woman should be respected. Every life is valuable,” Ernst said, adding, “So I see these bills as being very pro-woman. We’re trying to protect that young girl, that baby in the womb, and make sure that she has every opportunity given to every other child that’s wanted.” Ernst said despite the defeat, she hopes to win the support of her pro-choice colleagues on these bills. “I am always hopeful,” she said. “I am an eternal optimist and I think that these bills and the stories behind some of these bills will resonate with our friends and colleagues on the left, and I am hoping that they do draw something from deep down inside of them and understand that we can be pro-life and pro-life is pro-woman, and hopefully that they would come to understand that and support us on these very, very important pro-life measures.” Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who authored the Born-Alive bill, argued the legislation should have passed “one hun- dred to zero.” "We had 44 Democrats not with us, 41 actively filibustered, and three were off on the presidential campaign trail where they’re pretending to kiss babies, but they wouldn’t actually show up to vote to protect real-life babies,” Sasse said during a Thursday interview on EWTN Pro-Life Weekly. Sasse said although he is disappointed by the outcome of the vote, “we want to keep drawing more attention to this and force people to have these conversations about these moral responsibilities we have to love the weak- est and most vulnerable among us.”

Justice Department weighs in on Kentucky religious freedom case

Washington D.C., Feb 28, 2020 / 03:00 pm (CNA).- The Department of Justice on Thursday registered its support for the religious freedom case of a Ken- tucky photographer in a lawsuit over a city anti-discrimination ordinance.

“The central question presented in this case is whether the government can Photographer holding camera against newlywed couple. Credit: compel a wedding photographer to photograph, provide photography editing Vectorfusionart/Shutterstock services for, and blog about weddings of which she does not approve, and does not wish to photograph or to promote,” the Justice Department (DOJ) said in a statement of interest in the case filed on Thursday.

“The answer is no,” the Justice Department concluded.

The case of photographer Chelsey Nelson is currently before a federal district court in Kentucky. Nelson, a pho- tographer with her own business, sued the city government of Louisville over an ordinance she says would com- pel her to violate her religious beliefs and serve certain types of weddings, including same-sex weddings.

“Ms. Nelson has a practice of ‘declin[ing] requests for wedding celebration and boutique editing services if the request required [her] to use [her] artistic talents to promote or positively portray anything immoral, dishonora- ble to God, or contrary to [her] religious beliefs’,” the DOJ stated.

Alliance Defending Freedom, which represents Nelson, applauded the DOJ’s statement on Friday.

“Chelsey serves all people. But the Louisville government is trying to compel Chelsey’s speech, force her participation in ceremonies she objects to, and eliminate her editorial control over her photographs and blogs,” ADF senior counsel Jonathan Scruggs stated Feb. 28. Pope Francis prays at Auschwitz July 29, 2016. Credit: Vatican Media. The “Metro Ordinance” in question, of Louisville city and Jefferson County, Kentucky, is an anti-discrimination ordinance for businesses and other places of “public accommodation, resort, or amusement.” Two of the protected categories under the law are “sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Under the law, businesses cannot deny goods and services on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender iden- tity, as well as other classes, nor can they post notices saying they could do so.

Nelson filed a complaint over the ordinance, saying that the city “is using the threat of limitless damages, com- pliance reports, posting of notices, and court orders” to compel business owners like her to “participate in sol- emn ceremonies she disagrees with—same-sex wedding ceremonies.”

The Metro Ordinance is an unconstitutional violation of free expression, DOJ argued.

“Photography,” the DOJ said, “is an expressive art form,” including at a wedding where the “photographer makes numerous artistic and viewpoint-based judgments” through which “to convey meaning and ideas through photography and editing.”

To compel a photographer “to create expression for and to participate in a ceremony that violates her sincerely held religious beliefs invades her First Amendment rights in a manner akin to the governmental intrusion in Hur- ley,” the DOJ said, referencing the 1995 case of Hurley v. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian & Bisexual Group of Bos- ton, Inc.

Scruggs said that he hopes the Supreme Court will take up the similar case of Washington florist Barronelle Stutzman in Arlene’s Flowers v. State of Washington as a companion to the case of Fulton v. City of Philadelph- ia, which concerns the city’s decision to sever ties with Catholic Social Services over access to foster placement for same-sex couples.

Stutzman has appealed to the Supreme Court for a second time after the Washington state supreme court again ruled against her early in 2019. She had been sued by the ACLU and the state for declining to serve a same-sex wedding.

“Without the Supreme Court’s intervention in Barronelle’s case,” Scruggs said, “state and local government of- ficials will continue to threaten sincere people of faith like Barronelle and Chelsey with severe penalties for living out their beliefs in the public square.”

Last year, the Kentucky state Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Christian business owner who declined to serve an LGBT pride festival, and who was punished by a local government for discrimination.

Head of Ethiopian Catholic Church barred from entering Eritrea

Asmara, Eritrea, Feb 27, 2020 / 11:14 am (CNA).- Cardinal Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, the head of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, was prohibit- ed from leaving the Asmara airport Saturday. The move comes after tensions between the Church and government in Eritrea.

The BBC reported that Cardinal Berhaneyesus, Ethiopian Archbishop of Addis Abeba, had been issued a visa, but officials at the airport of the Eritrean capi- tal said Feb. 22 they had been ordered by those “higher up” not to allow him Then-Archbishop Berhaneyesus into the country. Last year the Eritrean government seized and closed a number of Catholic healthcare sites. It is believed the seizures are retaliatory, after the Church in April 2019 called for reforms to reduce emigration. The bishops had also called for national reconciliation.

In June and July 2019 the government shuttered as many as 29 Catholic hospitals, health centers, and clinics.

Eritrea's bishops framed the problem as one of religious liberty, saying: “It is our firm belief that, with the re- cent requisition of our clinics, a specific right of our religion has been violated, which prescribes, ‘to love oth- ers and to do good to them.’ Any measure that prevents us from fulfilling … the obligations that come to us from the supreme commandment of brotherly love is and remains a violation of the fundamental right of reli- gious freedom.”

Eritrea is a one-party state whose human rights record has frequently been deplored, and government seizure of Church property is not new.

A 1995 decree restricting social and welfare projects to the state has been used intermittently since then to seize or close ecclesial services.

In July 2018, an Eritrean Catholic priest helping immigrants and refugees in told EWTN that authorities had recently shut down eight free Catholic-run medical clinics. He said authorities claimed the clinics were unnec- essary because of the presence of state clinics.

Christian and Muslim schools have also been closed under the 1995 decree, according to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom's 2019 annual report.

Eritrea has been designated a Country of Particular Concern since 2004 for its religious freedom abuses by the US Department of State.

Many Eritreans, especially youth, emigrate, due to a military conscription, and a lack of opportunities, freedom, education, and health care.

A July 2018 peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which ended a conflict over their mutual border, led to an open border which has allowed for easier emigration.

The Eritrean and Ethiopian Catholic Churches are closely linked. Both use the Alexandrian rite, and the Eritrean Catholic Church was separated from the Ethiopian Catholic Church only in 2015.

'Repent and accept the Gospel' Trumps say in Ash Wednesday statement

Washington D.C., Feb 26, 2020 / 09:00 am (CNA).- President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump issued a presidential message on Wednesday, Feb. 26, acknowledging Ash Wednesday and offering prayers for everyone ob- serving Lent.

The Trumps said in the message that they wished “everyone observing Ash Wednesday a peaceful and prayerful day.” President Donald Trump and his wife Ash Wednesday marks the start of the liturgical season of Lent, during which Melania Trump at the Elysee Palace, Catholics observe a time of repentance and preparation for Easter through the Paris. “Today, millions of Christians will be marked on their foreheads with the sign of the cross. The imposition of ashes is an invitation to spend time during Lent fasting, praying, and engaging in acts of charity,” said the statement from the Trumps.

“This powerful and sacred tradition reminds us of our shared mortality, Christ’s saving love, and the need to repent and accept the Gospel more fully,” they said.

The president and first lady offered prayers for everyone who is observing Ash Wednesday, and said they wished everyone a “prayerful Lenten journey.”

“May you grow closer to God in your faith during this blessed season,” said the message.

This is the first time the Trumps have issued a message concerning Ash Wednesday. The last presidential mes- sage on Ash Wednesday was released in 2016 by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

In addition to prayers for those observing Lent, the Obamas extended prayers to “all those who suffer, including those Christians who are subjected to unspeakable violence and persecution for their faith.” Retired archbishop disciplined after calling Pope Francis a ‘heretic’

Wloclawek, Poland, Feb 27, 2020 / 07:00 pm (CNA).- A retired archbishop who accused Pope Francis of heresy has been ordered to cease celebrating Mass in public.

Archbishop Jan Paweł Lenga, the 69-year-old former Archbishop of Karaganda in Kazakhstan, has also been forbidden to preach at Masses or speak to the media.

The sanctions were imposed by the Diocese of Włocławek in central Poland, Archbishop Jan Paweł Lenga. where the archbishop retired after serving in Kazakhstan. Kamczadałka/wikimedia cc by sa 3.0

Archbishop Lenga immediately defied the ruling by giving an interview to WRealu24.tv, in which he insisted that he would continue to speak out.

Fr Artur Niemira, chancellor of Włocławek diocese, told the Polish Catholic news agency KAI that local Bishop Wiesław Mering had decided to impose the disciplinary measures in order to prevent the spread of scandal among the faithful.

(Continued on Page 16) T HE S PIRIT P A G E 16

(“News” from Page 15)

KAI said the archbishop had refused to mention Pope Francis’s name when celebrating Masses. It added that the measures would remain in effect until the Holy See issues a judgment on the case.

The archbishop has repeatedly criticised Pope Francis. Last year the Polish journal Więź reported that he had called Francis a “usurper and heretic.”

Więź said the archbishop had given a book-length interview to the author Stanisław Krajski. The journal quoted the archbishop as saying: "Bergoglio preaches untruth, preaches sin, and does not preach a tradition that lasted so many years, 2,000 years... He proclaims the truth of this world and this is the truth of the devil."

In January, the archbishop appeared on the Polish television show Warto rozmawiać, prompting criticism from the Polish bishops’ conference. The bishops’ spokesman Fr. Paweł Rytel-Andrianik noted that the archbishop is not a member of the Polish bishops’ conference.

“Therefore the statements of Archbishop Lenga cannot be identified in any way with the Polish episcopal con- ference,” he said. “They cannot be treated as positions of Polish bishops.”

In June 2019, Archbishop Lenga was among of the signatories of the 40-point "Declaration of Truths."

The declaration claimed to address “the most common errors in the life of the Church of our time,” reaffirming Church teaching on topics such as the Eucharist, marriage and clerical celibacy.

Jan Paweł Lenga was born in present-day Ukraine in 1950. He was ordained secretly in 1980 due to Soviet perse- cution of the Catholic Church. A member of the Marian Fathers, he was appointed apostolic administrator of Kazakhstan in 1991, the year that Kazakhstan became the last Soviet republic to declare independence.

He was appointed to Karaganda in 1998, where he remained until 2011, when Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation under canon 401 § 2 of the Code of Canon Law, which states that diocesan bishops may resign “because of ill health or some other grave cause”.

Archbishop Lenga retired to a community of Marian Fathers in Licheń Stary, a village that is home to Poland's largest church, in the Diocese of Włocławek.

Fr Niemira, chancellor of Włocławek diocese, said the bishop had imposed the measures on Archbishop Lenga in accordance with canons 392 and 763 of the Code of Canon Law.

Canon 392 states that, in order to protect Church unity, “a bishop is bound to promote the common discipline of the whole Church and therefore to urge the observance of all ecclesiastical laws”. Canon 763 says that bish- ops have the right to preach everywhere unless forbidden to do so by a local bishop. Vatican City implements health measures over coronavirus

Vatican City, Feb 27, 2020 / 03:00 pm (CNA).- The Vatican has implemented special health measures and can- celed some events as more than 500 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Italy.

Hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in Vatican City offices, and there is a nurse and a doctor on call at a Vatican clinic to give immediate assistance, Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni told Vatican News.

While there have been no diagnosed cases of the coronavirus in Vatican City, Bruni said Feb. 24 that Vatican health staff have worked with the Italian Ministry of Health on procedures which can be brought into action, and are in close contact with the regional authorities in Lazio.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Italian authorities, some events scheduled for the next few days in indoor places and with an important influx of public have been postponed," Bruni said.

With Pope Francis’ Lenten retreat scheduled for March 1-6, there are no papal audiences scheduled for next week, but conferences in Rome and other indoor events have been canceled.

A conference schedule to take place March 5-6 at the Pontifical Gregorian Pilgrims stand in St. Peter's Square University on the opening of Vatican archives of Pope Pius XII has been can- after the Wednesday general audi- celed, as has a March 2-7 communications workshop at the Pontifical Ur- ence on Feb. 26, 2020. An event for a book on Cardinal Celso Costantini Feb. 25, at which Cardinals Pietro Parolin, Luis Antonio Tagle, and Fernando Filoni were expected to speak, was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.

As of Feb. 27, Pope Francis is still scheduled to give his Sunday Angelus address on March 1 before leaving for his Lenten retreat.

Pope Francis did not cancel his Wednesday general audience Feb. 26, but he was later seen coughing during his Ash Wednesday Mass.

The pope chose not to attend a scheduled liturgy with priests in Rome Feb. 27 “due to a slight indisposition,” according to the Holy See press office. However, the pope’s other appointments, such as Mass in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, took place as usual.

Italian authorities reported 528 cases of the coronavirus Feb. 27 with 14 deaths. Nearly all of the reported cases are in northern Italy. In response to the outbreak, Italian officials have also imposed quarantine restrictions on several towns in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, where most of the infections have occurred.

The Archdiocese of Milan suspended Masses beginning on the evening Feb. 23 until further notice. The of Venice, Archbishop Francesco Moraglia, suspended Masses and other liturgical celebrations, including bap- tisms and Stations of the Cross, until Sunday March 1.

In Rome’s region of Lazio there have been just three reported cases: an Italian, who has recovered, and two Chinese tourists, who are being treated in a hospital.

“I wish to express again my closeness to the coronavirus patients and the health workers who treat them, as well as to the civil authorities and all those who are working to assist the patients and stop the infection,” Pope Francis said Feb. 26.

SPRING BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS I wanted to thank everybody for there contribution to another successful turnout at St. Johns Blood Drive. I ap- preciate everyone's help. Special thanks to Rev. Anh Tran for announcing the blood drive before and after mass (I do believe parishioners are more likely to participate when they hear the priest support the Knight’s activi- ties). We surpassed the goal given to us by Carter Blood Care which is another plus. We ended up collection 17 pints which is a great start for 2020.

We will have two more blood drives this year and look for some really good numbers. Again, thank you for your support!
