The case originated in an application (no. 21613/07) against the Russian Federation lodged with the Court under Article 34 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (“the Convention”) by nine Russian nationals, Mr Garri Kimovich Kasparov, Mr Aleksey Valeryevich Tarasov, Mr Nikolay Vladimirovich Kharlamov, Mr Nikolay Viktorovich Kalashnikov, Mr Andrey Pavlovich Toropov, Mr Aleksandr Viktorovich Stelmakh, Mr Yuriy Nikolayevich Orel, Mr Vyacheslav Viktorovich Melikhov and Ms Oksana Anatolyevna Chelysheva (“the applicants”), on 24 May 2007. 2. The applicants were represented by Ms K. Moskalenko (the first, the third and the ninth applicants), Ms O. Mikhaylova (the second applicant), Ms O. Polozova (the fourth applicant) and Ms N. Kotenochkina (the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth applicants), lawyers practicing in Moscow. The Russian Government (“the Government”) were represented by Mr G. Matyushkin, Representative of the Russian Federation at the European Court of Human Rights.
