SBM Training and Sales Off to Flying Start... Susan Montanye=s SBM Training and Sales, with just its third consignment, celebrated its biggest sale Thursday at OBS April when hip 915 brought a final bid of $275,000 from bloodstock agent Mike Ryan. AI thought she would be $200,000 or $250,000 by the action at the barn,@ Montanye said. AShe had quite a few scopes. We set the reserve low and let the market speak for itself.@ Montanye was selling the daughter of Hard Spun on behalf of co-breeder Allen Poindexter, who bred the filly on a foal share with Darley, and Carrie Brogden. Poindexter signed the ticket on the youngster at $50,000 at Keeneland September last year. Montanye admitted the result was thrilling. AI didn=t know if I was going to cry or what,@ she said. AMy heart was pounding. It is exciting. And it is exciting to see them do well. I really believe in the filly, so I hope she goes on and proves herself.@ SBM Training and Sales marks a Susan Montanye transition for Montanye, who Jessica Martini showed hunters as a kid and has been riding at breeze shows for the last decade. AI started galloping the babies probably 10 years ago and then from there I went to the 2-year-old sales and started breezing horses,@ Montanye recalled. AI picked up a few partnership horses three years ago and that=s where I started.@ The process moved ahead with an injury last year. ATo be honest with you, being a breeze rider, you always have the risk of getting hurt,@ she explained. ALast year, for example, I did go down on a horse and broke my collar bone. So it put me out for several of the breeze shows and it made me think about it. I=ve got two kids, and eventually, at some point in time either our bodies can no longer do it or we get hurt. At some point we have to break away from getting on horses and I knew I needed another outlet for financial reasons. So I thought to myself, what better way to stay in the business and do what I do for other people, but eventually just turning it over to the training end and selling horses for myself, partnerships and clients.@ Montanye, who was born in New Jersey, but has lived in Florida for much of her life, sold nine horses at OBS April and she will have a small consignment at OBS June. AHopefully, as the years go on, I may have more select-type horses and go to the March sale, but right now I think I=ve fit my horses into this April sale and I have six going to June right now. Montanye credited her crew with SBM=s early success. AI=ve got the greatest team ever,@ she said. AKatie and Leanne and Joe--hard workers and I couldn=t do this without them. They are the best.@ Looking ahead, Montanye said, AI just want to continue to do this--selling honest racehorses. Obviously, we all need to make money in this business and it=s a great game.@ Click here to share this story TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 4/25/14 • PAGE 7 of 18 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

What They’re Saying ...at the Sales AI can only speak for myself. I think there=s been a strong high-end and a little bit of a weak middle. My horses breezed the way they should have and sold the way they should have with the exception of one. But otherwise, I think it=s been fair.@ Cary Frommer AI think overall, it=s been a tremendous market. There=s a lot of depth, there are buyers at every level. At the top end, it=s as strong as at any other sale and the lower market is very healthy. Obviously, there=s always a few at every market that get overlooked, but I would say that the mesh is finer at this sale than it=s been at any other sale this year.@ Nick de Meric, de Meric Sales AIt=s been astronomical. It=s been very tough for a middle-of-the-road type buyer--that $75,000-$125,000 range. I think the bottom-end buyers are being pushed out. I think it=s been sporadically strong and I think in the scheme of things, it=s great for the business.@ Nick Hines AI think April is the place to sell a 2-year-old in training. Horses stay sounder when you sell them later in the year. And they are starting to get an international market here, almost similar to the Keeneland September sale. I think as the years go by, this market will be comparable to the market at Keeneland. I love selling at this sale because, at your select sales you have a very limited top end and you have no middle or bottom buyers. At this sale, you have a diversity of buyers. That=s what makes it good for all of us, for the buyers and for the sellers. There are horses here that fit all levels and that=s what makes this a beautiful horse sale.@ David McKathan, Grassroots Training & Sales AIt=s been very competitive to buy horses and very good for the seller with the right horses--horses who pass the vet and had a good breeze show. You have every segment of the market here. You have the smaller owner or trainer who spends $20,000 or $30,000 to the multi-million dollar outfit that can spend large amounts. There is something for everyone. I was buying and selling. I sold one poorly and three very well. I bought a Quality Road filly (hip 1143) for clients for $180,000 at Keeneland September and she sold today for $350,000. I was buying in the lesser market and it was very competitive. The middle market is back. It looks like there is a buyer for every horse. Before it was just the top end, but now you have buyers at all segments at the market. And it=s like a big fair here. There are 1200 horses catalogued, probably 1100 horses breezed. Everybody thinks they have a chance. That=s the advantage of this sale. That=s why you see this sale coming up every year stronger and it will probably be even stronger next year. Now people know they can bring a very nice horse and be paid for it.@ Bloodstock agent Hubert Guy TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 4/25/14 • PAGE 8 of 18 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

Bewitch S. cont. Given a few months off, the homebred picked up where she left off with an off-pace score from Aigue Marine in Gulfstream=s GIII The Very One S. Feb. 15, but threw in a clunker last time when no better than seventh in the GIII Orchid S. in Hallandale Mar. 29. Drawn widest in this field, Inimitable Romanee was with the early leaders while looking to drop in and finally secured a position in centerfield as Viva Rafaela (Brz) (Know Heights {Ire}) set the pace from Aigue Marine. Romantica raced handy and was about three off the inside as the field crossed under the wire with a full circuit to travel. There was little change in the plot in the middle stages of the race, as Alan Garcia had the nose of Inimitable Romanee just off the tail of Romantica down the backside and into the final half- mile. Inimitable Romanee was shuffled back a bit as the first seven to make the stretch were well bunched, but she was steered off heels with a furlong and a half to travel and quickened up nicely to grab Aigue Marine in the waning strides. Caroline Thomas rallied strongly from the tail for third ahead of a one-paced Romantica. AThe post position I had was a little difficult,@ Garcia admitted.
