SAY WHAT? Harry Herbert, managing director of Highclere Racing--owner of G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II S. favorite Telescope (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})--spoke out about Taghrooda’s King George participation on At The Races yesterday. "It's exciting and adds more spice to the race--I don't think any of us saw it coming," Herbert said. "I thought she was a shoo-in for the Irish Oaks and having a horse like Telescope in the King George, your first reaction is 'ouch.'” Herbert continued, “I'm delighted--it will make the race spicier--but a little concerned, as she's a really good filly. It would probably only happen in this country that a 3-year-old filly takes on the older colts. I thought it was an awesome performance in the Oaks--she's a magnificent-looking filly and I'm sure this has been carefully thought Tarfasha out." Racing Post

MINE GIVEN GO-AHEAD IN HUNTER VALLEY The Australian government=s Department of Planning has recommended that a proposed coal mine--set to be cut 500 meters from stud farms in New South Wales-- proceed, despite protests from the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders= Association and recommendations from the government=s Planning Assessment Commission. The mine site sits on the border of Coolmore Australia. "Since the implementation of the Strategic Regional Land Use Policy [in 2012], the NSW government has stated their new policies and processes are designed to protect significant agricultural lands, water and industries,@ said Dr. Cameron Collins, president of the HTBA. "The recommendations of the independent Planning Assessment Commission were that this mine should not go ahead, and that the studs should be afforded the highest level of protection from mining. It is extraordinary that the Planning Department should reject the findings of the government=s independent Planning Assessment Commission and the Gateway Panel.@ Australia=s Hunter Valley is the country=s Thoroughbred breeding capital, and the home to world- class studs including Darley, Coolmore, Arrowfield and Vinery. The Hunter=s Thoroughbred breeding industry contributes over A$5 billion annually to the national economy and A$2.4 billion to the New South Wales economy, but has recently been under threat from the increasing presence of coal mines. Cont. from p6 AIt is incomprehensible that a government department can, with the stroke of a pen, dismiss the advice of two independent bodies appointed by the government and signal the death knell of an entire industry in the Hunter Valley--billions of dollars of investment, and thousands of jobs for the sake of one mine,@ Collins added. AThis is not over yet. A second independent PAC needs to consider this proposed mine. The NSW government needs to step up and deliver on its commitments. We hope that sense will prevail.@
