We may not have the calibre of the days of Mill Reef, Nijinsky, Dancing Brave, Reference Point and Nashwan but it's great to see John Gosden pitching three representatives of the Classic generation into action. The choice is TAGHROODA, who maintained her unbeaten record in tremendous style when winning the Oaks. She handles quick ground and can maximise the weight received from all rivals. Stable companion Eagle Top was massively impressive at the Royal meeting and it's surely significant he's the preference of William Buick over Derby third Romsdal. Telescope, runaway winner of the Hardwicke Stakes, 2013 Irish Derby winner Trading Leather, recent Eclipse Stakes winner Mukhadram and Breeder's Cup scorer Magician can all have cogent cases advanced for their claims, with the latter suggested as the main threat to the younger brigade. The colt steps up to a mile and a half for the first time and it will assist his cause if Martin Dwyer can get him to race a little less freely. He's progressing well though and should go close if getting home. Our Gabrial looks on a high enough mark while Notarised has been in-and-out this term but is respected at his best. • Muhaarar=S Early Success for Shadwell Cont
TUESDAY, 19 DECEMBER, 2017 RL: The vibes surrounding the stock by Muhaarar at the foal MUHAARAR=S EARLY sales was incredibly strong and I envision it being the same next year at the yearling sales. The demand for stock by first-season SUCCESS FOR SHADWELL sires is phenomenally strong for some reason and shows little sign of waning, so pinhookers will have a hot commodity on their hands next year. GK: Shadwell signed for one at Goffs (i340,000 colt {lot 575} out of Miss Beatrix {Ire}), and one at Tattersalls (280,000gns filly {lot 983} out of Maakrah {GB}). What attracted you to those two in particular? RL: The Miss Beatrix colt was a standout. He had plenty of scope, but was also particularly athletic with a super walk. He was also beautifully bred, out of G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Miss Beatrix. The filly was also a beauty, with a fantastic walk and great temperament--which Muhaarar appears to have passed on to the majority of his stock--and also had a super Muhaarar | Shadwell page, being out of a half-sister to Iffraaj (GB) from the family of Cape Cross (Ire). Cont. p2 by Gary King Muhaarar (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})'s first foals made a favourable impression with some of the industry's top judges over recent weeks. Hugo Lascelles, Shadwell Estate, Blandford Bloodstock, Capital Bloodstock, Tally-Ho Stud, New Park Stud, James Hanly, Cheveley Park Stud, Peter & Ross Doyle, and Camas Park Stud all signed on the dotted line. TDN's Gary King caught up with Richard Lancaster, Shadwell's Stud Director, to get an insight into this early success.
