REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2017 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART TWO By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw last time, the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was the first amateur press association (apa) dedicated to that author. Its founder, Tim C. Marion, started it in 1972 when he was 13 and edited it through the first 19 of its bimonthly Mailings, but left afterward since he was ultimately more interested in fan activities than Howard as a literary figure. Before that, discontent with his leadership and with the real dearth of worthwhile essays and critiques during the early years led to future literary critic Don Herron and others to leave and create The Hyperborian League (THL) apa in October, 1975. Its official editor (OE) was Herron and it was “devoted to the creative discussion of authors Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard and their works,” though material on other fantasy writers and poets was welcomed. Herron said he spelled the name of the apa “Hyperborian” rather than “Hyperborean” because he wanted to emphasize the fact that it was devoted to both CAS (whence Hyperborean) and REH (whence Hyborian). It would still be occasionally misspelled, even on covers. Its official organ document was titled “Skull & Sandalwood,” suggested by REH’s “Skull-Face” and CAS’s Sandalwood. The fanzines composing the quarterly Mailings were at first stapled by the contributors and left so by the OE, who collected them and mailed them out to the current individual members. He also distributed some copies to libraries, sent “speculative” (“spec”) copies to recruit prospective members, and sold remaining ones to defray postage costs.

5 Dread Horror on the High Seas After having spent the last of their ill-gotten gains from a rich but unfortunate merchant vessel, the Tigress got caught in a severe storm. But thanks to the skill of the heroes and the hardy crew of the Tigress, they survived Nature's fury. Now, with the seas calm once more, the lookout spots another ship. It appears to have taken severe damage from the storm, lying dead in the water. An easy target for the experienced pirates of the Tigress. Checking equipment and preparing to board, they maneuver the Tigress alongside the other ship. Suddenly a shudder runs through the hull. The crew looks around nervously, and then several enormous tentacles erupt from the sea as from an octopus of truly staggering proportions! Crewmen are picked up and pulled screaming to their deaths below the suddenly frothing waters. And as a laughter as cold and terrible as the crushing depths rolls in from the other vessel, foul sorcery reaches out with its claws of pestilence. Those of the crew of the Tigress it touches are transformed into mindless monstrosities bent on killing the heroes! Conan, Bêlit, Hadrathus and Shevatas will have to act quickly to kill the sorcerer controlling the tentacled horror from the dark waters below, and prevent the monster from tearing the Tigress apart, killing them all! Objectives To win the game, the Heroes must ki ll Skuthus, get all surviving heroes after Skuthus is dead back to the Tigress, and get the number of tentacles adjacent to the Tigress down to 2.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Conan the Buccaneer by Lin Carter Lancer/Ace Conan the Buccaneer: Rereading and Reminiscence. I know I’ve been a little lax in continuing my recollections of these Lancer Conan novels that I read in high school and I apologize. So after much delay, here is my recollection of Conan the Buccaneer. I read this one probably after having read the first several novels that I’ve already reviewed, but not in their order. As I had stated, the first one I ran across was Conan the Adventurer, and then having fell in love with Robert E. Howard’s barbaric hero, I then read the first four books. That put me on track to read this one. At the time, I probably had no clue this was a pastiche. I just assumed everything was written by Howard and didn’t realize how much of their own work L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter added to the Conan histories. Therefore, at the time, I thought this was just a really good story without any of the baggage many Howard purists attach to it. I’ve defended de Camp and Carter previously and don’t feel I need to continue doing so, except that I still firmly believe if they and Lancer hadn’t created these paperback editions with Frank Frazetta’s paintings, then Howard’s Conan, and probably all his writing, would be forgotten like many of his contemporaries. Conan the Buccaneer. Conan the Buccaneer (1971) by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter. Contents “Introduction” (Lin Carter) “Conan the Buccaneer” L.

2 A Strange Phantom in the Night Death stalks the streets of Tarantia. A monstrous creature, night after night, preys upon vulnerable women. Exotic dancers, trollops, run away princesses, and women of ill repute; the night brings terror to those who would usually seek its discretion. Each morning more strangled corpses are discovered in heaps around the back alleys, taverns, lotus houses and other dens of iniquity where such women frequent. A pall fear and blood hangs thick over the city. Stifled by the weight of the crown the King is bored with his daily routine of state and tedium. He takes ill and sequesters himself in his chambers. Much to the chigrine of the petty Aquilonian officials currying for his attention and to the bewilderment of the supposed court healers, the King responds to no one, until he hears the rumors. A savage stangler. Capable of tearing a man limb from limb, prowling the streets. Seemingly unstoppable. Perhaps this will cure him of the malady of civilization. In the throes illness, King Conan takes to the streets to put an end to the slaughter. Donning a skull mask and stifling a besetting cough, Conan becomes a phantom in the night. He keeps to the shadows. He dodges patrols of his own elite Black Dragon guards and finally narrows in on the Strangler, near the cemetary, on the edge of the "entertainment" district. The barbarian turned king finally begins to feel alive again as he now hunts the strangler. "Cutthroats, kidnappers, and a cult of rapists... all were struck down by a strange phantom in the night." (Inspired by Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #4 "The King in a Cage" by Jason Aaron) Objectives If the Hero kills the The Strangler before the end of turn 6, the Hero wins the game If the Strangler kills all four ladies of the night before the end of turn 6, the Overlord wins the game.

REHeapa Vernal Equinox 2021 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART ELEVEN By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw in our first installment [1], the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. By early 1990, the regular membership stood at only 17, but Mailings ran from about 100 to over 300 pages in length. L. Sprague de Camp, Glenn Lord, and Karl Edward Wagner were honorary members. Copies were no longer being archived at Ranger, Tex., Junior College. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #96 through #100. Mailings in the #80s and #90s were often distinguished by the long contributions of Rusty Burke, Vern Clark, and Steve Trout, whose zines boasted many long, thought-provoking Mailing Comments. Howard content was steadily growing and improving. For Mailing #96, Steve Trout does a color cover. This is a three-section, 309-page Mailing, the third largest ever, with stronger than average content and all but one of the 17 regular members contributing. Don Herron rejoins, reprinting his “Conan vs. Conantics” essay [3] from REH: Two Gun Raconteur #3, as well as L. Sprague de Camp’s reply and Herron’s rebuttal, both from REH: TGR #4. Herron also reprints Eric Carlson’s EOD zine Prologue #1 (July, 1975) and his zine Eventide #2 (Sep., 1976) from the Necronomicon amateur publishing association (apa), both criticizing de Camp’s repetitive and inaccurate statements in a range of publications about Clark Ashton Smith, H.

Svensk titel: Conan fascisten? – En idéanalytisk studie kring sword & sorcery och Robert E. Howards fiktive barbar Engelsk titel: Conan the fascist? – An idea study of sword & sorcery and Robert E. Howard’s fictional barbarian Författare Thomas Rovinsky Kollegium 1 Färdigställt: 2006 Handledare Christian Swalander Abstract: This thesis falls within the realm of social studies, specifically social studies in literature, and attempts to establish whether the sub-genre of fantasy literature known as sword & sorcery contains elements which resemble the tenets of fascism. Robert E. Howard is considered the progenitor of the sub-genre and his stories have an influence on the nature of sword & sorcery literature today, 70 years after his death. Howard’s creation of the sub-genre coincides with the spread of fascist ideologies around the world in the 1930’s and the study attempts a societal mirroring analysis of Howard’s texts. With the help of an analytical model based on fascism expert Robert O. Paxton’s so-called “mobilizing passions” of fascism, Howard’s stories of Conan the barbarian have been deconstructed and analyzed. The study shows clearly that certain elements of the stories do indeed correspond to basic ideological elements of fascism. However, the results of the study are inconclusive as to whether this indicates that sword & sorcery was inspired by the widespread surge of fascism which occurred at roughly the same time, or if they simply sprang from the same sociocultural soil.

  • The Scarlet Citadel by Robert E
The Scarlet Citadel By Robert E. Howard I They trapped the Lion on Shamu’s plain; The roar of battle had died away; the shout of victory mingled with the cries of the dying. Like gay-hued leaves after an autumn storm, the fallen littered the plain; the sinking sun shimmered on burnished helmets, gilt-worked mail, silver breastplates, broken swords and the heavy regal folds of silken standards, overthrown in pools of curdling crimson. In silent heaps lay war-horses and their steel-clad riders, flowing manes and blowing plumes stained alike in the red tide. About them and among them, like the drift of a storm, were strewn slashed and trampled bodies in steel caps and leather jerkins—archers and pikemen. The oliphants sounded a fanfare of triumph all over the plain, and the hoofs of the victors crunched in the breasts of the vanquished as all the straggling, shining lines converged inward like the spokes of a glittering wheel, to the spot where the last survivor still waged unequal strife. That day Conan, king of Aquilonia, had seen the pick of his chivalry cut to pieces, smashed and hammered to bits, and swept into eternity. With five thousand knights he had crossed the south-eastern border of Aquilonia and ridden into the grassy meadowlands of Ophir, to find his former ally, King Amalrus of Ophir, drawn up against him with the hosts of Strabonus, king of Koth. Too late he had seen the trap. All that a man might do he had done with his five thousand cavalrymen against the thirty thousand knights, archers and spearmen of the conspirators.
