Howard and first published in Weird Tales magazine c. May Due to its epic scope and atypical romance, the story is considered an undisputed classic of Conan lore and is often cited by Howard scholars as one of his most famous tales. The story Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast in an Argos port where Conan forcefully demands passage aboard a sail barge, the Arguswhich is casting off for southern waters to trade beads, silks, sugar and brass-hilted swords to the black kings of Kush. At first, the captain of the barge objects to his demand to travel without paying for the passage, and Conan threatens him and the crew with his drawn sword. But eventually the captain agrees to let Conan stay on board, since "It would be useful to have a fighting man on the voyage" and gradually Conan and the captain, named Tito, become quite friendly. The captain is soon informed that Conan is fleeing the civil authorities of Argos due to a court dispute in which Conan refused to betray the whereabouts of a casual friend to a magistrate and instead drew his sword and killed the magistrate - whereupon he had to swiftly flee. It is emphasized that at this moment Conan was a complete land-lubber, with no previous experience or knowledge of the sea. Conan tries to rally the crew after the Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast was killed, and when the fight becomes clearly hopeless he manages to jump aboard the pirate ship, intending to sell his life dearly. Oddly smitten by this fiery woman, Conan agrees and, for a time, they raid the Black Coast together brutally pillaging coastal towns and instilling fear Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast the superstitious natives. Driven to rage and now alone, Conan confronts her supernatural murderer. Everett F. Bleiler described "Queen of the Black Coast" as "probably the best of the Conan stories, perhaps because it is the only one based on another emotion than lust, greed, or hatred. The first series, titled simply Conanran for 50 issues from to ; the second, titled Conan the Cimmerianbegan publication in and lasted 25 issues until ; the third series, titled Conan: Road of Kingsstarted publishing in December and ended in January after 12 issues; a fourth series, titled Conan the Barbariancontinuing from Road of Kingslasted 25 issues from February to March ; a fifth series, titled Conan the Avengerstarted publishing in April and ended in April after 25 issues; a sixth and final series, titled Conan the Slayer lasted 12 issues from July to August Another series, titled King Conanwhich takes place during Conan's time as king, ran in parallel and launched in Februaryconcluding in with 24 issues. Dark Horse also published half a dozen one-shots and almost a dozen mini-series. The publishing rights for Conan the Barbarian returned to Marvel Comics in Howard, with no other connection to many Marvel Comics series or other post-Howard material. The comic's art consists of only color and pencilwork, with no inkwork, providing a painterly aesthetic. The series follows Dale Rippke's "Darkstorm" chronology. The story "Helm" in Conan 18 addresses Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast of the major "faults" in that chronology. Starting at issue 24, Tony Harris became the cover artist. One of the first pieces of art Harris submitted to Conan editor Scott Allie was a fully nude version of the cover of Allie inserted the artwork in a blurb at the Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast of Conan and the Demons of Khitai 3. This displeased some comic store owners, and Conan and the Demons of Khitai 3 was reprinted with a censored cover in the blurb. Even so, 4, copies of Conan 24 were printed with the nude cover, and distributed through the Diamond Dateline retail newsletter shrink-wrapped in black plastic. The series ended with issue 25 in November It featured Roy Thomas as the writer and Mike Hawthorne as the primary artist on the series.
