Read a little about our history. Conan (Dark Horse Comics) - Wikipedia Howard and first published in Weird Tales magazine c. May Due to its epic scope and atypical romance, the story is considered an undisputed classic of Conan lore and is often cited by Howard scholars as one of his most famous tales. The story Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast in an Argos port where Conan forcefully demands passage aboard a sail barge, the Arguswhich is casting off for southern waters to trade beads, silks, sugar and brass-hilted swords to the black kings of Kush. At first, the captain of the barge objects to his demand to travel without paying for the passage, and Conan threatens him and the crew with his drawn sword. But eventually the captain agrees to let Conan stay on board, since "It would be useful to have a fighting man on the voyage" and gradually Conan and the captain, named Tito, become quite friendly. The captain is soon informed that Conan is fleeing the civil authorities of Argos due to a court dispute in which Conan refused to betray the whereabouts of a casual friend to a magistrate and instead drew his sword and killed the magistrate - whereupon he had to swiftly flee. It is emphasized that at this moment Conan was a complete land-lubber, with no previous experience or knowledge of the sea. Conan tries to rally the crew after the Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast was killed, and when the fight becomes clearly hopeless he manages to jump aboard the pirate ship, intending to sell his life dearly. Oddly smitten by this fiery woman, Conan agrees and, for a time, they raid the Black Coast together brutally pillaging coastal towns and instilling fear Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast the superstitious natives. Driven to rage and now alone, Conan confronts her supernatural murderer. Everett F. Bleiler described "Queen of the Black Coast" as "probably the best of the Conan stories, perhaps because it is the only one based on another emotion than lust, greed, or hatred. The Hyborian Review Volume 3, Number 8. August 31, 1998 Laboring, I tell ya… Great REH Quotes From The Hour of the Dragon, Howard's full-length Conan tale, written in the spring of 1934, published serially in Weird Tales, December 1935-April 1936. In a small glade below him four soldiers in Nemedian chain-mail were binding a noose about the neck of a gaunt old woman in peasant garb. A heap of fagots, bound with cord on the ground nearby, showed what her occupation had been when surprized by these stragglers. Conan felt slow fury swell his heart as he looked silently down and saw the ruffians dragging her toward a tree whose low- spreading branches were obviously intended to act as a gibbet. He had crossed the frontier an hour ago. He was standing on his own soil, watching the murder of one of his own subjects. The old woman was struggling with surprizing strength and energy, and as he watched, she lifted her head and voiced again the strange, weird, far-carrying call he had heard before. It was echoed as if in mockery by the raven flapping above the trees. The soldiers laughed roughly, and one struck her on the mouth. Conan swung from his weary steed and dropped down the face of the rocks, landing with a clang of mail on the grass… “Dogs!” he said without passion and without mercy. “Do Nemedian jackals set themselves up as executioners and hang my subjects at will? First you must take the head of their king.

  • Chapter Two Unravelling the Pattern: the Magus Figures in the Wheel Of
89 Chapter Two Unravelling the Pattern: The Magus Figures in The Wheel of Time A significant plot or pattern element in contemporary high fantasy is the use of a range of superhuman characters (i.e. those of a higher nature or possessed of magical powers) who function as helpers to or opponents of the hero. For the purpose of my thesis I am defining the magus as a superhuman character, whether male or female, wh3 is given or progressively assumes a role of responsibility for keeping the pattern of mortal existence in balance, in order to save his or her world from destruction by the forces of the Dark. Although the trope of the magus has been much written about, as a kind of magical warrior, less attention has been paid to the role played by this figure in high fantasy as an interpreter of the discernible patterns of the heroic quest. It takes an extraordinary interpreter in the text to make sense of the pattern of destiny that forms around the central characters in works such as Robert Jordan's WOT. It is in the light of pattern interpreter and keeper, or of pattern disrupter, that I wish to explore the dualism of Ligh: and Dark that Jordan assigns to the stock figure of the magus, which continues to play such a pivotal element in the fantasy genre. Accordingly, this chapter provides an exposition of Jordan's patterning of Light and Dark in his presentation of three female magus figures. Moraine symbolises 'good' and rationality. She is dedicated to keeping Rand within the pattern that will bring victory for the forces of Light.

  • THE RISE of the NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART EIGHT by Lee A
REHeapa Vernal Equinox 2020 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART EIGHT By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw in our first installment [1], the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Brian Earl Brown became Official Editor (OE) by 1977 and put in a lot of work guiding the organization, though not always competently. The Mailings at that time were in a real doldrums due to the paucity of REH-related content and the lack of any interest by Brown to do anything about it. In the early 1980s, Rusty Burke, Vernon Clark, and Graeme Flanagan started pushing for more Howard-related content, with Burke finally wresting away the editorship from Brown, as we saw last time. By mid-1984, the regular membership stood at only 23 and Mailings were down to about 130 pages in length. Post-Brown Mailings were not as big or as prompt as they had been, but were of higher quality in content and appearance, with some upswing in REH-related content and marked by more responsive and less contentious administration. L. Sprague de Camp, Glenn Lord, Karl Edward Wagner, and Everett Winne were honorary members, and copies were being archived at Ranger, Tex., Junior College. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175. [2] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #71 through #80.

  • By Lee A. Breakiron ONE-SHOT WONDERS
REHeapa Autumnal Equinox 2015 By Lee A. Breakiron ONE-SHOT WONDERS By definition, fanzines are nonprofessional publications produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon, such as a literary or musical genre, for the pleasure of others who share their interests. Readers themselves often contribute to fanzines by submitting their own articles, reviews, letters of comment, and fan fiction. Though the term fanzine only dates from 1940 when it was popularized within science fiction and comic book fandom, the first fanzines actually date back to at least the nineteenth century when, as a uniquely American development, literary groups formed amateur press associations or APAs in order to publish collections of poetry, fiction, and commentary. Few, if any, writers have had as many fanzines, chapbooks, and other ephemera dedicated to them as has Robert E. Howard. Howard himself self-published his own typed “zine,” The Golden Caliph of four loose pages in about August, 1923 [1], as well as three issues of one entitled The Right Hook in 1925 (discussed later). Howard collaborated with his friends Tevis Clyde “Clyde” Smith, Jr., and Truett Vinson in their own zines, The All-Around Magazine and The Toreador respectively, in 1923 and 1925. (A copy of The All-Around Magazine sold for $911 in 2005.) Howard also participated in an amateur essay, commentary, and poetry journal called The Junto that ran from 1928 to 1930, contributing 10 stories and 13 poems to 10 of the issues that survive. Only one copy of this monthly “travelogue” was circulated among all the members of the group.

2 A Strange Phantom in the Night Death stalks the streets of Tarantia. A monstrous creature, night after night, preys upon vulnerable women. Exotic dancers, trollops, run away princesses, and women of ill repute; the night brings terror to those who would usually seek its discretion. Each morning more strangled corpses are discovered in heaps around the back alleys, taverns, lotus houses and other dens of iniquity where such women frequent. A pall fear and blood hangs thick over the city. Stifled by the weight of the crown the King is bored with his daily routine of state and tedium. He takes ill and sequesters himself in his chambers. Much to the chigrine of the petty Aquilonian officials currying for his attention and to the bewilderment of the supposed court healers, the King responds to no one, until he hears the rumors. A savage stangler. Capable of tearing a man limb from limb, prowling the streets. Seemingly unstoppable. Perhaps this will cure him of the malady of civilization. In the throes illness, King Conan takes to the streets to put an end to the slaughter. Donning a skull mask and stifling a besetting cough, Conan becomes a phantom in the night. He keeps to the shadows. He dodges patrols of his own elite Black Dragon guards and finally narrows in on the Strangler, near the cemetary, on the edge of the "entertainment" district. The barbarian turned king finally begins to feel alive again as he now hunts the strangler. "Cutthroats, kidnappers, and a cult of rapists... all were struck down by a strange phantom in the night." (Inspired by Marvel's Conan the Barbarian #4 "The King in a Cage" by Jason Aaron) Objectives If the Hero kills the The Strangler before the end of turn 6, the Hero wins the game If the Strangler kills all four ladies of the night before the end of turn 6, the Overlord wins the game.
