Smith. Major Department: Music This study examines music education in Malaysia. It traces its historical roots from the Eighteenth Century to the present, and illustrates the roles the Malaysian government and private sectors play in the development of music education. It further examines the influence of Western music on contemporary curriculum practices. vi CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Purpose and Value of the Study This study illustrates the role of the various Malaysian government organizations in shaping public school music education. The study also includes the recent progress developed by the private sectors in assisting the Malaysian government to make music education more affordable and accessible among the public. The Malaysian government plays an active role, initiating policies in music education; the private sectors follow and implement the policies in their educational system. Transborder TheorIes and ParadIgms In EthnomusIcological StudIes of Folk MusIc: VIsIons for Mo Lam in Mainland Southeast Asia ThIs talk explores the nature and IdentIty of tradItIonal musIc, prIncIpally khaen musIc and lam performIng arts In northeastern ThaIland (Isan) and Laos. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. These became his main informants.

    Press Release Official Opening of the Istana Heritage Gallery President Tony Tan Keng Yam officially opened the Istana Heritage Gallery on Friday, 7 October 2016. Located at the Istana Park along Orchard Road and opposite the Istana, the Istana Heritage Gallery offers visitors the opportunity to understand the history and heritage of the Istana. 2 Gazetted in 1992 as a National Monument along with Sri Temasek (formerly the Colonial Secretary’s house), the Istana mirrors the growth and development of Singapore from a colony to sovereign state. The Gallery explores the role and significance of the Istana, and captures the Istana’s transition from being the Colonial Governor’s House to its current role as the official Residence of the President. It also seeks to provide visitors with a glimpse into the Istana’s rich history through a specially curated range of heritage displays including state artefacts, artwork and state gifts received from foreign dignitaries by our past and present Presidents and Prime Ministers. 3 The state gifts are a highlight of the Gallery as this is the first time they are placed on permanent display for visitors to enjoy. They are lasting testimonies of Singapore’s friendship with other countries. The current display of 18 state gifts includes: A silver cigarette box, which is one of the earliest recorded gifts in the Istana’s collection. This was presented by His Excellency Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj bin Raja Muhammad, Governor of Penang, to Yang di-Pertuan Negara Encik Yusof bin Ishak in 1961; A bronze bust of an Induna, presented to President Ong Teng Cheong by His Excellency Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of the South Africa, during his first state visit to Singapore in 1997; A pair of silver goblets which bears Singapore’s Coat of Arms and the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II – symbolising the longstanding friendship between these two countries.

    BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Masalah Saat ini interior ruang merupakan suatu yang terpenting dalam menunjangnya sebuah bangunan ataupun hunian. Karena sebagai individu , kita membutuhkan tempat berlindung yang nyaman. Bangunan ataupun hunian terdiri dari bangunan pribadi yang berfungsi sebagai rumah, dan bangunan publik yang berfungsi sebagai tempat usaha. Dengan perkembangan zaman , desain interior tidak hanya diperuntukan bagi sebuah hunian, tetapi juga untuk ruang publik seperti restoran, toko, perkantoran, rumah sakit , hingga gedung-gedung pemerintahan. Desain interior mempunyai peranan penting agar tercipta susunan ruang yang baik sesuai dengan fungsi , kebutuhan serta kenyaman tanpa meninggalkan segi estetikanya. 1 Dalam hal ini sebuah gedung pemerintahan pun harus di desain dengan memiliki kenyamanan dan fungsi yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan serta memiliki sistem keamanan yang baik . Salah satunya adalah sebuah Istana Kepresidenan yang memiliki peranan penting dalam sebuah pemerintahan dan menjadi sebuah simbol kenegaraan. Di Indonesia telah memliki 6 Istana Negara yang tersebar di beberapa kota,seperti Bogor,Cipanas, Yogyakarta, Bali dan dua diantaranya terdapat di Jakarta,yaitu Istana Merdeka dan Istana Negara dan digunakan sehari-hari oleh Presiden Republik Indonesia. Sedang keempat lainnya difungsikan sebagai tempat peristirahatan ketika Presiden mengunjungi daerah tersebut. Bandung merupakan salah satu kota di Jawa Barat, yang memiliki nilai sejarah bagi bangsa Indonesia. Di sinilah Konfrensi Asia-Afrika diadakan, sehingga banyak sekali tamu Negara yang datang, serta Presiden Republik Indonesia. Dengan kedaan daerah yang baik, serta iklim yang sejuk , maka akan sangat bangga bagi warga Bandung, jika dibangun sebuah Istana Kepresidenan yang berfungsi sebagai tempat peristirahatan dan tempat penerimaan tamu kenegaraan. Sebuah Istana Kepresidenan harus dapat menjadi simbol Negara dan menjadi kebanggan daerah.
