The Marketing of Corn in the First Half of the Eighteenth Century: North,East Ken( By DENNIS BAKER I HE home market was at least six times as valuable as the overseas market during the first half of the eighteenth century. The ratio could have been T much higher and one contemporary estimate even puts it at 32 to ~. Throughout the early modern period the vast bulk of this traffic concerned agri- cultural produce, for in I75o England was still a predominantly agricultural economy. 2 Marketing, nevertheless, remains one of the most neglected aspects of agri- cultural history? There is a dearth of suitable source material. We know much about the management of crops and livestock in the field, little about their journey beyond the farm gate. A thorough exploration of the various outlets leading from farm to consumer is a rare venture. More frequently we seek shelter in some terminological cul-de-sac like 'commercialized agriculture' or 'farming for the market'. Admittedly, in some regions the market outlets were few or fraught with hazards; such, for instance, was the difficult position of those who farmed the Midland clays, ill-drained and intractable. But others, more fortunately placed, could choose from a wide range of marketing possi- bilities; this held true, for example, over much of the eastern and home counties. The farmers of north-east Kent possessed a number of competitive advan- tages, but none more valuable than proximity to the markets both local and in London. This fertile belt of Kent stretches from Rainham in the west to the eastern extremities of Thanet, a distance of about 35 miles; it averages 8 miles or more in width.

The Grote Houtpoort rises majestically in the foreground, dominating the scene with its weathervane reaching to the composition’s edge. The Kalistoren Tower, used for the storage of gunpowder, is in the middle with the Kleine Houtpoort visible in the distance. Built in 1570, the Grote Houtpoort was at the end of the Grote Houtstraat, one of the main roads from the Grote Markt that led outside the city walls. Beyond the gate lay the wooded area, called the Haarlemmerwoud. The temperature is mild, over the arched bridge of the Grote Houtpoort, residents contentedly stroll, conversed or stop to admire the view. Below boatmen propel their craft across glass-like waters with shimmering reflections and floating swans. The sense of well-being pervades this orderly view of the city’s great landmarks that dominate its skyline.

He worked for many years as a civil servant in the Ministry of Defence; during the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force, stationed in Warwickshire and East Anglia. He died on 26th October 1973 at his home in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex. Simmons had a lifelong interest in windmills and watermills. During more than 40 years of private research, he visited many mill sites and consulted a wide range of documentary sources, including fire insurance records, local newspapers, directories and maps. He also exchanged information with other mill enthusiasts and thus gathered further information on those mills he was unable to visit.

His works are predominantly head and shoulder portraits, often against a monochrome background. The viewer is drawn towards the sitter’s face by light accents revealed by clothing. After his initial training, Mierevelt quickly turned to portraiture. He gained success in this medium, becoming official painter of the court and gaining many commissions from the wealthy citizens of Delft, other Dutch nobles and visiting foreign dignitaries. His portraits display his characteristic dry manner of painting, evident in this work where the pigment has been applied without much oil. The elaborate lace collar and slashed doublet are reminiscent of clothes that appear in Frans Hals's work of the same period.     SUFFOLK BETTER BROADBAND PROGRAMME NEWSLETTER - SUMMER 2014 MESSAGE FROM MARK “The rollout continues to march on at a great pace; we have now made better broadband available to over 35,000 premises across the county. We are getting to very rural areas, which you can see in the tables overleaf. Our overall target is around 100k premises by Autumn 2015, at which point we will have achieved ~85% fibre coverage across Suffolk, with a commitment that everyone will get at least 2Mbps. This quarter we will be upgrading a significant number of “exchange only” lines. These are premises which are connected direct to the telephone exchange, so wouldn’t ordinarily benefit from upgraded green cabinets. Here, we are building new cabinets closer to premises, and I am sure that we will need to do more of this as we try to get superfast broadband out to as many as possible. I mentioned in the spring newsletter about some further funding for additional coverage from the Local Enterprise Partnership and also from government (BDUK). We have also been making great strides with this process, and are hoping to be the first county in the country to complete the procurement process to add more coverage beyond the ~85% we already have under contract. With this additional funding, we hope to get close to 95% fibre coverage for the county, which should be in service by 2017 at the latest. This will mean we are able to tell those previously in our “final 15%” that we can now get them fibre. We expect this process to conclude in this Autumn.
