She has published several articles on these subjects and her first monograph, entitled The Nature of the Beast: Transformations of the Werewolf from the 1970s to the Twenty-First Century is forthcoming from University of Wales press. She thinks Detroit would be an interesting place to visit but that Manchester UK is the best city in the world. Inger H. Dalsgaard holds a doctorate in American studies from King’s College, University of London, and M.I.T. She is associate lecturer in American Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark, and the editor of Thomas Pynchon in Context (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming in 2019) and, with Brian McHale and Luc Herman, The Thomas Pynchon Companion (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Helena Esser is pursuing a PhD at Birkbeck College, London. Her research examines how steampunk fiction repurposes a shared urban imaginary of Victorian London. She has published articles on steampunk London in the London Literary Journal (11:2, 2014), on steampunk post-humanism in the Cahiers victoriens et éduardiens (87, 2018), and on representations of London’s East End in the TV series Ripper Street in Neo-Victorian Studies (11:1, 2018). Michael P. Moreno is a Professor of English & Diversity Studies at Green River College in the American state of Washington. He earned his PhD from the University of California, Riverside in 2007 in English with disciplinary concentrations in Latinx literature & culture, 20th / 21st century American literature, and spatial theory. His dissertation research examines how animals, plants, and material objects function as characters in autobiographical texts that tell stories of entanglement and becoming. His forthcoming and published work on multispecies literary characters can be read in Journal of Modern Literature, Resilience: A Journal of the Environmental Humanities, Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences, The Annals of Iowa, Humanimalia, and Western American Literature. Shana Sanusi teaches film and media studies at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. She is also a PhD candidate at the School of Arts and Social Sciences in the Malaysian campus of Monash University. Her dissertation explores the intersection between familial trauma and domestic architecture in Japanese and South Korean horror films. Her research interests include representations of subjectivities, gender discourse and contemporary East Asian literature. Shelby E. Ward is a doctoral candidate in the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical, and Cultural Thought (ASPECT) program at Virginia Tech, where she teaches for the Political Science and International Relations Department. Ward is a transdisciplinary scholar with backgrounds in critical, feminist, and postcolonial theories, and an emphasis on narratives, who investigates neocolonial power relations within current international relations Courtney Lynn Whited is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in Literature. Her research focuses on the Indigenous literature of North America with a special interest in women writers. She is currently working on a single-author study of Susan Power. v Introduction: Otherness and the Urban by Maria Beville The city is a unique and subjective space. It is fragmented and indistinct. It is, at once, place and text: to walk the city is to read it. In “Semiology and Urbanism” (The Semiotic Challenge), Roland Barthes notes that the city is a discourse and a language: “[t]he city speaks to its inhabitants, we speak our city, the city where we are, simply by inhabiting it, by traversing it, by looking at it”. However, in this discourse, there exists “a conflict between signification and reason, or at least between signification and that calculating reason which wants all the elements of the city to be uniformly recuperated by planning”. Our desire to map the city is a desire to map and to write the self: a process without closure that constantly reminds us of our own inherent Otherness. In this way the city is multivalent. It is both the location and the sign of the Other. And rather than merely existing as a physical place, the city is experience; individualised and multiplied in its alterity. While the city exists as a place to be read and is therefore unique in every individual reading, it is also a place to be written, inspiring writers, artists, and thinkers to become lost in city streets and locales as they struggle to find new ways to meet the challenge of representing the unrepresentable. Thus, the city is where the subject and space become intertwined. Otherness: Essays and Studies Volume 7 · Number 1 · March 2019 © The Author 2019. All rights reserved Otherness: Essays and Studies 7.1 While the city becomes part of the subject and the subject a part of the city, urban space, in its resistance of representation, remains an unvarying challenge to notions of self, of sameness, of homogeneity. The city is therefore bound to exist in tension with identity, both individual and collective. Just as is the case with the self, there can be no cohesive vision of the city because the city not only resists mapping, it resists unified narrative; in its flux and in its phantasmagoria. And yet the Otherness of the city remains a part of the definition of urban selfhood and understanding this is best achieved through a balanced view of the city’s physical and metaphysical dimensions. No examination of the textuality of the city should overlook the materiality of the city and its impact on the city experience. City design, city building, city governance and city use form the structures of the city which carry and mediate its otherness. The series of multidisciplinary articles in this special volume address these aspects of the city and Otherness to form a body of research which examines the nature of identity construction in relation to the Otherness of the city. By approaching the Other in the city, they also consider the city as Other. Topics explored include: urban otherness in literature, food culture and otherness in the city, the postmodern city, ethnicity, urban minorities and spatial identity, and animal otherness in an urban context. Spanning representations of the city in and of Asia, North and South America, and Europe, the articles in this issue present research which is positioned at the intersections of Gothic Studies, theories of postcolonialism and transnationalism, food studies, ethnic studies, media studies, and genre literature. What they share in common is a preoccupation with the imagined city, and with the magic of the urban: the potential of the cityspace to reflect and contain the multiplicity of identity in all of its fluidity and ambiguity. Chris Jenks refers to the city as “a magical place”. However, “the magic is not evenly distributed” (2004). The intense flux that the city presents renders it impossible. It exists in a state of ontological non-conformity.     Book reviews: Ashbridge 271 Robert T. Tally Jr and Christine M. Battista (eds) (2016) Ecocriticism and Geocriticism: Overlapping Territories in Environmental and Literary Studies. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan. xii + 214pp., £58 (hardback), ISBN 981137553676. Despite longstanding examination of the environment in literary studies, ‘spatiality’ in its broadest sense continues to be an emergent area of enquiry for scholars of literature. Within the arts and humanities, geographers including David Harvey, Doreen Massey and Edward W. Soja, (all of whom influence essays in Ecocriticism and Geocriticism), have done much to pioneer the intricate relationship between the social and the spatial, an association best summarised in what Soja terms the ‘socio-spatial dialectic’ (Soja 1980: 207). The practice of spatial literary studies concerns not only literary representation of place and environment but pays equal attention to accounts of the psychological experience of space and (dis)placement. While psychogeographers have attempted to bridge the gap between spatial and symbolic experience since the ‘spatial turn’, the collection addresses the timely need for the convergence of critical practices attuned to both environmental and geocritical relations. A recent aspect of the wider discipline of spatial studies has been the focus on postmodern, socially- produced space—including human experience and subjectivity, the poetics of everyday life, and socio- economic manifestations of spatiality— in addition to the notion of a material sense of ‘place’ and ‘placedness’. Robert T. Tally Jr and Chrstine Battista’s collection attempts to overcome this disjuncture between ecocriticism and geocriticism. While geocriticism is principally orientated towards physical ‘space, place and mapping’ (2), owing much to the intellectual pedigree of cultural geographers and situationist thinkers Henri Lefebvre and Michel Foucault, in addition to those mentioned above, ecocriticism’s principal concern is the environment and its effect on human experience.

    INTERLITT ERA RIA 2019, 24/2: 495–508 495 Bleeding Edge of Postmodernism Bleeding Edge of Postmoder nism: Metamodern Writing in the Novel by Thomas Pynchon SIMON RADCHENKO Abstract. Many different models of co ntemporary novel’s description arose from the search for methods and approaches of post-postmodern texts analysis. One of them is the concept of metamodernism, proposed by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker and based on the culture and philosophy changes at the turn of this century. This article argues that the ideas of metamodernism and its main trends can be successfully used for the study of contemporary literature. The basic trends of metamodernism were determined and observed through the prism of literature studies. They were implemented in the analysis of Thomas Pynchon’s latest novel, Bleeding Edge (2013). Despite Pynchon being usually considered as postmodern writer, the use of metamodern categories for describing his narrative strategies confirms the idea of the novel’s post-postmodern orientation. The article makes an endeavor to use metamodern categories as a tool for post-postmodern text studies, in order to analyze and interpret Bleeding Edge through those categories. Although discussions of a paradigm shift have been around long enough, when talking about contemporary literary phenomena we are still using the categories of feeling rather than specific instruments. However, Joseph Tabbi has questioned the novelty of post-postmodernism as something new, different from postmodernism and proposes to consider the abolition of irony and post- modernism (Tabbi 2017).

ABSTRACT The Malay horror film industry has had a chequered history since the screening of its first locally produced movie Pontianak in 1957. Some scholars have written extensively on the ups and downs of the Malay horror movie industry and some researchers have done extensive research on the popularity of the genre among Malay viewers. Many others have contributed articles that add colour to issues germane to the industry. This paper, in its own small way, seeks to enrich discussion on the raison d'être, the reason or justification for being or reality of the Malay horror movies from a much-perceived perspective but one which has not been much articulated: the no tahayul prescription imposed on Malay horror movies by the Lembaga Penapis Filem (LPF) and its effects on the industry. The central question of my research is: “How do the visual features of South Korean horror film posters change when they are reconstructed for an international audience?” I compare examples of original Korean horror movie posters to English language versions constructed for an international audience through a mostly American lens. My study method is semiotics and close reading. Korean horror posters have their own, unique style that emphasizes emotion and interpersonal relationships. International versions of the posters are geared toward an audience from a different visual culture and the poster designs get translated accordingly, but they still maintain aspects of Korean visual style. Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

According to world leaders’ discursive construction of South Korea, South Korea is a site of “progress” that proves the superiority of the free market capitalist system for “developing” the so-called “Third World.” Challenging this contention, my dissertation demonstrates how recent South Korean cinema made between 1998 and the first decade of the twenty-first century rearticulates South Korea as a site of economic disaster, ongoing historical trauma and what I call impassible “transmodernity” (compulsory capitalist restructuring alongside, and in conflict with, deep-seated tradition). Made during the first years after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the films under consideration here visualize the various dystopian social and economic changes attendant upon epidemic capitalist restructuring: social alienation, familial fragmentation, and widening economic division.
