Człowiek zawsze szukał w przyrodzie roślin, które przywracały mu zdrowie i siłę. Już od kilkudziesięciu wieków ludzkość zna uzdrawiające właściwości czosnku, rumianku, mięty, babki czy piołunu. Kolebką ziołolecznictwa był Egipt, gdzie uprawą i dozowaniem roślin o działaniu leczniczym zajmowali się kapłani. Chińska medycyna naturalna cieszy się zaufaniem już od ponad 5000 lat. W Indiach i Azji Południowo-Wschodniej wykorzystuje się około 1800 roślin leczniczych. Szacuje się, że na świecie istnieje około 400 tysięcy gatunków roślin, a 40 tysięcy z nich posiada właściwości farmakologiczne (z których analizie poddano zaledwie około 1,5%). Medycyna naturalna współistnieje z medycyną opartą na współczesnej nauce oraz na lekach syntetycznych i dzisiaj nie ma wątpliwości, że może wspomagać oficjalne metody stosowane przez lekarzy. Ziołolecznictwo stanowi również inspirację dla nowoczesnych metod leczenia, a obecnie obserwujemy nawrót i ponowne odkrywanie jakże bogatej i niezbadanej dotąd matki natury [1,2], Obecnie bardzo szybko rozwijającą się dziedziną (szczególnie w Europie Zachodniej, Japonii i Stanach Zjednoczonych), będącą połączeniem medycyny naturalnej i zielarstwa, jest aromaterapia. Polega ona na wprowadzeniu do organizmu pacjenta poprzez układ oddechowy (inhalacje) lub przez skórę (masaż, kąpiel lub kompresy) biologicznie czynnych substancji z olejków eterycznych pochodzenia roślinnego. Aromaterapia to dosłownie leczenie zapachami, czyli lotnymi substancjami wytwarzanymi przez rośliny, tzw. olejkami eterycznymi. Szczegółowy

(Lamiaceae) is a perennial aromatic herb, which is widespread in the high altitude areas of the central and eastern parts of South Africa and also occurs in southwest Botswana and central Namibia. It is closely related to Salvia runcinata L. f. and Salvia repens Burch, ex Benth., with which it forms a species complex. The most recent revision of southern African Salvia species is that by Codd (1985). In this revision, the most important characters used in delimiting the three taxa were corolla size, calyx size and trichome density. As a result of intergrading morphological characters, the specific limits between the three taxa are not clear and positive identification of typical material is often difficult. Taxonomic delimitation through use of chemical characters was therefore the principle objective of this study. The taxa represented in this species complex are known in folk medicine and plant extracts have been used in the treatment of urticaria, body sores, and stomach ailments and as a disinfectant.

This enzyme is further implicated in the involvement of melanin in malignant melanoma, the most life- threatening skin tumors. Although, synthetic products were found effective to combat this menace, nevertheless, overtime detrimental effect on human skin is a challenge. Investigation of natural tyrosinase inhibitors from methanol extracts of medicinal plants of Lamiaceae family using L-tyrosine as substrate on three different complementary assays (TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry) was carried out accordingly. The result indicated Salvia chamelaeagnea, Salvia dolomitica, Plectranthus ecklonii, Plectranthus namaensis, and Plectranthus zuluensis, with significant zone of inhibition against tyrosinase on TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry result showed that extracts of Plectranthus ecklonii (IC50 = 21.58 휇g/mL), Plectranthus zuluensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL), Plectranthus madagascariensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL) and Salvia lanceolata (IC50 = 28.83) demonstrated good anti-tyrosinase activity when compared with kojic acid (IC50 = 3.607 μg/mL). On the other hand, cyclic voltammetry are in consonant with above results thereby supported the nomination of some of the extracts as strong anti-tyrosinase agents.

Efficacy of herbal remedies is determined by the phytochemical profile which is dependent on the species, locality and growth conditions. Salvia stenophylla (Burch. ex Benth.) is a local aromatic sage growing in almost all South African biomes, with the volatile compound accumulation varying depending on season, locality and genotype. Salvia stenophylla extracts have proven anti-inflammatory, anti-plasmodial, anti-oxidant and anti-anxiety properties due to the presence of essential oils, flavonoids and caffeic acid derived phytochemicals. As a result, S. stenophylla extracts are increasingly being used for the formulation of pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical products.

Box 524, Johannesburg 2006, South Africa; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +27-11-559-2412 Abstract: The Lamiaceae is undoubtedly an important plant family, having a rich history of use that spans the globe with many species being used in folk medicine and modern industries alike. Their ability to produce aromatic volatile oils has made them valuable sources of materials in the cosmetic, culinary, and pharmaceutical industries. A thorough account of the taxonomic diversity, chemistry and ethnobotany is lacking for southern African Lamiaceae, which feature some of the region’s most notable medicinal and edible plant species. We provide a comprehensive insight into the Lamiaceae flora of southern Africa, comprising 297 species in 42 genera, 105 of which are endemic to the subcontinent. We further explore the medicinal and traditional uses, where all genera with documented uses are covered for the region. A broad review of the chemistry of southern African Lamiaceae is presented, noting that only 101 species (34%) have been investigated chemically (either their volatile oils or phytochemical characterization of secondary metabolites), thus presenting many and varied opportunities for further studies.
