HATZOLOH EMERGENCY LINE: 416-256-1000 A MESSAGE FROM THE RAV

Pesach contains so many rituals designed to connect us with Hashem. Our meticulousness on this holiday is a true testament to Bnei Israel’s grateful devotion to our Creator. But amidst all of these “Bein Adam L’Makom” (between man and G-d) observances, is there anything within Pesach that can unite us with our fellow Jew, to remind us of our obligations “Bein Adam L’Chavero” (between man and his fellow)?

First, let’s consider the age-old question of why we should be thanking Hashem for taking us out of Egypt. After all, isn’t He the One who sent us there in the first place?!

Many answers are offered to this question, but the one that resonates most with me is the argument that it wasn’t Hashem who forced us down to servitude. Consider that the whole story of Yoseph, and the jealousy and resentment harbored by his brothers, was the cause of Yoseph being sold into Egyptian slavery, which ultimately resulted in all the Jews ending up in Egypt. Perhaps we should pause at the beginning of the Seder to reflect how it was our own sin’as chinam (senseless hatred of each other) that brought the initial servitude. Only after we were humbled and uni- fied through decades of slavery did Hashem redeem us.

The truth is, the Haggadah contains subtle points of reference to Yoseph and his brothers. We cite two examples:

First, Rabeinu Manoach (13th century) tells us that one of the reasons for dipping Karpas into saltwater is to remind us of how the brothers dipped Yoseph’s coat of many colors (the Kesones Pasim) into blood after selling him as a slave. They did this to deceive their father, Yaakov, into thinking that Yoseph was dead. The Ben Ish Chai (19th cent.) notes that the word “Karpas” is a contraction the ”, פסים“ are the first two letters of ” פס“ the word for selling, and ”, מכר“ are the last two letters of the word ” כר“ :of two words in Megillas ” כרפס“ is associated with the word ” פסים“ coat of many colors. Additionally, Rashi on Gen. 37:3 notes that the word Esther (1:6), when describing the opulent fabric at Achashverosh’s feast.

Based on this, we have the opportunity, by dipping our Karpas at the beginning of the Seder, to reenact the sale of Yoseph and the subsequent dipping of Yoseph’s coat in blood.

The second reference can be found a bit later in the Haggadah. In the paragraph “Arami Oved Avi,” where we make reference to Lavan’s evil intentions, we note:

שפרעה לא גזר אלא על הזכרים ולבן בקש לעקר את הכל. Pharaoh only decreed against the males, but Lavan sought to uproot everything.

If you take the first letter of each לעקר את הכל”.“ :Rabbi Chaim David Yoseph Azualai (18th cent.) points to the last three words Lavan’s daughter. This is an allusion to how Lavan posed the greatest of threats. He did so through ”, לאה“ word, you end up with his daughter Leah, for on Yaakov’s wedding night, when Yaakov thought he was going to marry Rachel, Lavan instead substituted Leah.

Why did the brothers sell Yoseph as a slave? Because they were jealous of the favoritism and bestowal of leadership that Yaakov showered upon their younger brother. But if Yoseph had been the OLDEST brother, there would have been no jealousy, since Yoseph would have been rightfully acting in his capacity as the firstborn and overseer of his brethren. In effect, the entire series of events around Yoseph’s sale took place because Lavan switched Leah for Rachel, thus causing Leah to sire all of Yaakov’s children first, and only later was Rachel able to give birth to Yoseph.

The reason, then, that we recall Lavan at the Seder, is because Lavan was the catalyst for all the jealously and sin’as chinam that caused our descent into Egypt. This is the point in the Seder where we should pause to consider our own jealousies and resentments, feelings which threaten to undermine the very essence of Klal Yisrael.

Can you find more references in the Haggadah to the sale of Yoseph? Please let me know. I look forward to celebrating Pesach with you and reliving our redemption together, both for the Bein Adam L’Makom benefits as well as for the Bein Adam L’Chavero.

From home to home, Karen and I wish you a Chag Kasher V’sameach.

SAVE THE DATE! JUNE 2, 2018 - Emunah Shabbos at BAYT BROTHERHOOD MISSION

BAYT BROTHERHOOD MISSION TO POLAND AND ISRAEL DECEMBER 2017

This past December, the BAYT Brotherhood added a pre-mission trip to our itinerary. Our mission started with one week in Poland led by Rabbi Korobkin and a tour guide from Israel, David Solomon. All of our accommodations, food, guides, bussing, and tour arrangements were made through a company called “J ROOTS”. To our surprise all of the hotels, food and touring were five star quality. J ROOTS provides travel arrangements for families, groups, and individuals throughout Europe. For more information, call Zak at 011-972-52-796-9953 or email [email protected].

Before World War II, Poland was the home to three million Jews. There was a one thousand year history of Jews living in Poland. At the end of the war there were only 350,000 Jews who still lived or returned to Poland, many of whom perished in the pogroms initiated by the Poles after the war.

We visited many cities where there was vibrant Jewish life in the early 1930’s. Today there stands a wall from a Shul, a Bemah in the middle of a square, and remnants of a Jewish community. The Lauder Foundation has been instrumental in restoring some of the buildings in former Jewish communities. One such building is the Yeshiva in Lublin, whose walls begged us to sing in the magnificent acoustics and learn a portion of Daf Yomi in the place where it all began. In Krakow, three or four shuls have been revived. However, without the tourists there is barely a Shabbat minyan.

As with every trip to Poland, we visited death camps and concentration camps. We visited museums and memorials. We walked through gas chambers and stood beside the ovens in the crematoria. We visited what is left of the ghettos in Warsaw, Krakow, and Lodz. We visited cemeteries that are one thousand years old. We visited graves of Tzadikim.

But, we also met the righteous Jews who live in Poland today trying to help hidden Jews reconnect with their Jewish roots. We met with Rabbi Shudrich, the Chief Rabbi of Poland, to discuss the Jewish Community in Poland today. In Krakow there is a JCC, under the direction of Jonathan Orenstein, where people who have some connection to being Jewish gather for Friday night dinner, sing Zemirot, and learn with Rabbi Baumol from Efrat in Israel. He leaves his family and remains in Poland two weeks every month to teach and study with a new generation of Poles who want to reconnect to the Jewish faith.

One of the highlights of our journey was bumping into an Israeli Commander Graduation ceremony in Birkenau. Here we sang Hatikvah with our wonderful Israeli soldiers. Here we felt reassured that the atrocities of the Nazi Era will never happen again.

The trip to Poland was an emotional rollercoaster. Most of us were very happy to board the El Al flight to Tel Aviv. Arriving in Israel after having been to Poland gives a new meaning to “mai avdut l’charut” from slavery to freedom.

In Israel we were joined by Karen Korobkin and other mission participants. Era Rapaport was once again our guide.

Some of the highlights of our Israel mission included visiting the Jaffa Development Center, where a Hesder Ysehiva is reviving Yiddishkeit in the city of Jaffa. At the Etzel Museum we met one of the original members of the Irgun, who knew Asher Saban’s father. We had a guided tour of the Soda Stream plant. Very impressive! We visited archaeological sites and the Bar Chochva Caves. We visited the Yvel Design Center in where Ethiopians have been trained to design . Many of us bought some of the Ethiopian jewellery. (We could not afford the price of Yvel originals.) We had a tour of the new Shalva facility for children with multiple challenges. We participated in the dedication of the library doors at the new Har Hamor Yeshiva In Har Choma Jerusalem. We met with Sharren Haskel a young and enthusiastic Likud member of the Knesset. She gave us her views on many areas under discussion in the Knesset today. We toured the Beit Shean Valley, the Old City of Beit Shean and the Old Roman City in the Beit Shean National Park. We were introduced to the power of the wind turbines at the Mount Gilboa Electrical Power Plant. We hiked through the Tel Lachish National Park. We tried our hand at baking sour dough bread in Gush Etzion. Our last visit was to Netiv Ha’avot which was scheduled for demolition (B”H that has been postponed).

The mission always includes places to which tourists have limited access. Elliott Cahan, the public relations representative of the Yeshiva in Elon Moreh, organized our day in the Shomron. We started at the Yeshiva in Elon Moreh. The boys were so thrilled that visitors came so far to see them. Mitzpe Ilan is a magnificent secluded lookout behind the Yeshiva, named in memory of Ilan Gabbai, who was the commander (himself a secular Jew) of the religious group of boys from the Yeshiva. We visited the site of the ancient city of Shomron (Sebastia). The archaeological site is comprised of the remains of six successive cultures dating back 10,000 years. This site is now inside a sometimes hostile Arab village. We were escorted and protected there by an armed military squad. We also had the opportunity to visit a boutique winery in Elon Moreh. For those of us who were able to remain in Israel after the mission, on the last night of Chanukah, Elliott arranged for us to visit Kever Yosef in Shechem with the group that is allowed access to the grave only 15 days a year.

On every mission, the BAYT Brotherhood sponsors a Motzei Shabbat Reception for BAYT Olim, their families, and friends. Our guest speaker this year was Robby Herman who talked about Halachic Organ Donation. Marci Rapp (former BAYT member) discussed her experience as a live organ donor. The evening was completed by a Kumsitz led by Rabbi Korobkin, Cyril Brenman, Aubie Diamond, Mitch Silverstein and Moishe Posner.

The next BAYT Brotherhood Mission is booked for December 9th - December 18th, 2018. We require a minimum of 20 shul members to participate in the mission before we can continue to finalize any of our plans. If you or your friends are interested in joining next year’s mission, please contact Marcee Rosenzweig at [email protected] or 416-302-7774. A $500.00 refundable deposit (less administration fees) must be made by July 31, 2018.

We plan great missions! We look forward to sharing our experience with you!

BROTHERHOOD MISSION INCLUSION @ BAYT

Almost one year ago, a group of BAYT members decided that we needed to do more. We felt that our kehilla would be enriched by enabling greater opportunities for inclusion into every aspect of synagogue life for people of all abilities. We established the BAYT Inclusion Committee, listened to families and began planning on how our shul can be more accommodating to members, children and guests living with physical, mental and cognitive disabilities. Our approach has been to work collaboratively with other BAYT committees, staff and volunteers and to this end, we started with the following:

 Ensured the availability of accessible seating during the High Holidays  Provided advice on accessibility solutions for future renovations  Conducted a survey and forum to gather information about needs in our community and solutions  Began publishing the “Inclusion Corner” in the BAYT Bulletin to share helpful tips  Designated a quiet room on Shabbat for those who require it  Met with our university student leaders to share knowledge on integrating principles of inclusion into student programming

We are grateful for the support of the BAYT Board, , staff, committees and members. We look forward to celebrating Shabbat Itanu with you on April 27-28 (email [email protected] to make a contribution or visit the BAYT website) and continuing this work. On behalf of our committee, we wish you a happy and inclusive Passover!

SHABBAT ITANU 2018

We are pleased to announce the 6th Annual Shabbat Itanu@BAYT set to take place on April 27-28, 2018 in partnership with Yachad, DANI, Yeshivat Nefesh Dovid, Kollel Ohr Yosef and BAYT Youth. This year, renowned teacher and inspirational speaker, Rabbi Yehoshua Hoffman, will be joining us as the scholar-in-residence.

More than ever before, the success of Shabbat Itanu will rely not only upon the exceptional ruach that we create, but also upon the generosity of community members, whose sponsorship allows us to create the inclusion for our kehilla. We kindly ask you to participate as a sponsor/supporter for the event to the level that you can contribute. Contributions to Shabbat Itanu can be made on the BAYT donation page by visiting http://www.bayt.ca/payment.php and selecting Donation - Shabbat Itanu Sponsor, by

phone or in-person at the shul office.

We are looking for hosts who are able to accomodate Yachad members and their advisors for Shabbat Itanu. All Yachad members will be hosted with an advisor. Accommodations are only needed for sleeping as all meals will be held at BAYT. Accommodations with wheelchair ac- cess and hosts that can accommodate 4 or more people are especially needed. If you are able to host, please contact Zahava Shields at [email protected].

Do you have airmiles saved up? Donating airmiles is a generous and easy way to help bring inspiring speakers to our community. Tax receipts available. Contact: [email protected] INCLUSION @ BAYT BAYT ADULT EDUCATION

The Adult Education Committee continues to offer programs for everyone. After Pesach, we have a mixture of offerings ranging from Shiurim, Scholar in Residences, Hebrew conversation classes, panel discussions and Special Shabbatot including a Shabbos commemorating Israel’s 70th birthday, and a Musical Shabbos. In addition, the BAYT Book Group will resume and we will offer some Wellness workshops for women and a Tour of Jewish Toronto.
