Version 1.0 March 2011 Birmingham Ornithology Collections Part 5 – The Collection of Foreign Birds

Introduction

The collection of foreign birds and study skins in Birmingham numbers over twelve hundred specimens representing almost 600 different from 122 families. In addition there are about 60 unidentified specimens. As with the general British collection some specimens (about 200) were re-numbered in the 1990s and cannot now be reconciled to their original collectors; however in many instances this could be narrowed down to two or three individuals based on the known natural ranges of particular species and the collecting areas of the main sources.

Sources

There are ninety seven individuals or organizations from which specimens of foreign birds were acquired. However, only sixteen of them contributed more than ten examples and a mere seven of them account for 57% of the collection. The more important figures are considered below.

Walter Chamberlain

Walter Chamberlain (1847-1920), brother of the famous politician Joseph Chamberlain, lived in Edgbaston, then Harborne Hall until 1902. He later moved to Ledbury, Herefordshire then to Cobham in Surrey. He joined Joseph Chamberlain in the screw making business of Chamberlain and Nettlefold and subsequently became chairman of GKN and W.T. Avery. Walter (and his brother Herbert) spent several years travelling around the world and they bought the Fijian Island of Naitauba in 1877 but sold it in 1899. During these journeys Chamberlain collected examples of local birds and, based on data recorded for the specimens which have survived in Birmingham, the world voyage (or voyages) took place between 1875 to 1885 as follows:

1875 Ceylon, Philippines, , 1876 , 1877 Fiji 1878 Australia 1881 Australia, Fiji, New Guinea, USA 1882 Canada 1883 New Guinea 1885 Ceylon

There are also specimens from Sarawak, and South America but no dates are recorded for these. Only a small portion of the Chamberlain collection survives and the original inventory entry states that there were some three hundred British specimens and two hundred foreign ones (unfortunately not individually listed). A marginal note however reads “Birds useless. Had to be destroyed. Feb. 1946”.

Major Richard Archibald Dyott

R.A. Dyott went to Australia in his mid twenties and was a keen collector of , birds and ethnographic specimens from the outset. Many of these he subsequently presented to Birmingham Museum (insects in 1924, zoology in 1930, skins and ethnography in 1932).

1

Birmingham Ornithology Collections Part 5 – The Collection of Foreign Birds

The specimens in Birmingham suggest that he was in Australia from 1904 to 1910 but visited other countries in the region such as New Guinea, The Solomons, New Zealand and Ceylon (the latter on his journey home). On the basis of his original labels it can be ascertained that he collected birds from in every year between 1904 to 1910, from in 1905, 1907, 1908 and 1910, from and in 1909 and from Ceylon in 1910. He published a book in 1912 in which he describes his travels and collecting called Travels in Australasia under the pseudonym “Wandandian”, Wandandia being the town in New South Wales where he was based for much of his time. The Dyott family home was at Freeford Hall, Lichfield.

W. W. Greener

A collection of Australian birds was donated to the museum by the firm of W. W. Greener, a Birmingham gun making company. The majority of these were collected by his son, Charles Greener, in the period 1896-1900. It is known that he visited Tasmania during this period but the majority of specimens were probably collected in (Melbourne area) or New South Wales. [Information kindly supplied by Graham Greener, personal communication].

Percy Amaury Talbot

Talbot was born on 26.06.1877 and died 28.12.1945. Between 1902 and 1931 he held various positions in Africa, principally in southern Nigeria. He was a member of the Alexander- Gosling expedition to Lake Chad (1904-05) as well as expeditions to North Cameroon and French Central Africa (1910-11). Among other publications he wrote the four volume Peoples of Southern Nigeria. He collected widely and donated both natural history and ethnography specimens to the British Museum and to other British museums. Birmingham Museum received a collection of some 1,335 objects on 26.08.1922. This included a small collection of bird skins nearly all collected in 1909 and mostly from the Oban district of Southern Nigeria.

Sir Harold Lincoln Tangye

Born 16.01.1866 at Acocks Green he was the elder son of Sir Richard Tangye. He is reputed to have travelled over 50,000 miles twice visiting Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He died on 24.02.1935. In 1931 he presented a small collection of Australian birds to the museum though there is no field data with them.

Sir J. Benjamin Stone Stone first entered politics in 1869 when he was elected to Birmingham Town Council and subsequently went on to become an MP. Although best known as a distinguished amateur photographer he had an interest in natural history from early childhood. He joined the Birmingham Natural History and Philosophical Society in 1885. He presented his large collection of historical photographs to the Birmingham Reference Library and his herbarium of almost 10,000 specimens to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. His small collection of bird skins from Malaysia, caught between 1897 and 1912, was presented to the museum in 1914. J. B. Williams

Little is known about this source. He was clearly associated with the University of Toronto as he presented a collection of Canadian bird skins some of which were specimens taken in the

2

Birmingham Ornithology Collections Part 5 – The Collection of Foreign Birds university grounds. The collection was presented in 1914 and, while the dated specimens fall between 1872 to 1914 overall, more than two thirds of them were collected in the six year period from 1887 to 1892.

Provenances

All areas of the world are represented but as with most museum collections coverage is not uniform. Thus 51% of the specimens come from Australasia, 14% from Asia, 13% from North America, 10% each from South America and Africa and only 1% each from Europe and Antarctica. This reflects the collecting activities and travels of the major donors to the collection. Thus specimens from Australasia come predominantly from the collections of Dyott and Greener with some from Chamberlain and Tangye. The Asiatic species come also from Dyott and Chamberlain but also from Stone. North America is almost exclusively covered by the Williams collection with a few from Lysaght, Chamberlain and minor donors. South America is represented predominantly by the collections formed by Crompton, Morley and Blake and Africa by that of Talbot.

Dates

As with the general British collection there is little merit in presenting a detailed chronology of the foreign specimens due to the heterogeneous assembly of the collection. However, its similarly overwhelmingly antiquarian nature is easily demonstrated through a breakdown of the field dates associated with specimens into the same broad chronological periods. Just over five hundred have firmly associated dates and of these 32% fall within the range 1872-1899, 64% 1900-1918 and a mere 3% in the forty three year period between 1919-1962. The overall range, 1872-1962, is narrower than that for the general British collection and as with the provenances it reflects the travel and collecting activities of the sources.

The Checklist

The checklist which follows includes most of the information given for the specimens in the museum inventories and on original labels. and taxonomic has been updated and generally follows that of the online version of Clements Checklist 6.3.2 (December 2008). However, within families genera have been placed in alphabetical rather than taxonomic order. The columns are arranged in the following order: 1. Birmingham accession number 2. The source from which the museum acquired the specimen 3. Date of collection (given in the format dd.mm.yyyy but where only the year is known this is given as 00.00.yyyy and where no exact day is known it is given as 00.mm.yyyy). Where there is no field data available but a clear terminus ante quem can be established (e.g. from the acquisition date) this is given as pre yyyy. 4. continent (Australia should be taken to mean the wider Australasian region) 5. region, country or state 6. detailed provenance where known. Any other information such as previous collection is also included in this column. An x in any column denotes that the information is not available in the inventory.
