Award-Winning Director Bringing Award-winning director bringing "Frozen" to Broadway By Peter Marks, Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on 03.01.18 Word Count 388 Level 600L Patti Murin as Anna and John Riddle as Hans in "Frozen." Photo by: Deen van Meer Michael Grandage directs plays. He has won awards for the stories he tells on the stage. None of his work prepared him for his latest play, though. Now, he has to handle a character with a carrot nose who might melt. That's because his latest play is Disney's "Frozen." Performances of the play began on February 22 in New York City. Grandage's musical is based on the 2013 Disney movie. Grandage and his team have been hard at work for more than a year. They hope their musical is as good as the movie. Grandage Told To Create "New Magic" Grandage is new to Disney. He has the hard job of meeting the high expectations set by the "Frozen" movie. He must create new magic using popular characters from Elsa and Anna's kingdom of Arendelle. This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. Disney asked Grandage to be true to the movie. They also want him to come up with new surprises, too. That brings us to Olaf the Snowman. How do you bring a snowman to the stage without it melting? Grandage had to think hard about Olaf. "Do you do Olaf as a man in a costume?" he asks, laughing. "Or do you do a puppet?" The answer is somewhere in between. They settled on using a real person who will be behind a puppet. Grandage Rewrote "Frozen" To Make Story Better Kristen Anderson-Lopez writes music. She wrote the music for the movie version of "Frozen." Her husband helped. They added more than 12 other songs for the stage play. Of course, it keeps the very popular song "Let It Go." Disney has made other musicals. One of them is "The Lion King." This musical has been very successful. It's too soon to tell how "Frozen" will compare. Grandage and his team did a tryout run of the show in September. After that, they changed some things. They wanted to make the play better. "We totally rewrote the ending," says Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Everyone agreed that "Frozen's" end had to be perfect. It has an important lesson. It's about understanding what's most important in life. Grandage says he thinks they've figured it out. Grandage says he likes to do things in their simplest form. "Frozen" is no different. He wants the story to shine through. It won't just be about the special effects. This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com. • Patti Murin, Josh Segarra and the Cast of Lysistrata Jones
BATTLE OF THE SEXES: (left to right) Patti Murin, Josh Segarra and the cast of Lysistrata Jones. Photo: Joan Marcus Theater Review Lysistrata Jones one of best musicals of 2011 LYSISTRATA JONES Book by Douglas Carter Beane Music & lyrics by Lewis Flinn Directed & choreographed by Dan Knechtges Walter Kerr Theatre 219 West 48th Street (212-239-6200), www.LysistrataJones.com By David NouNou It is no secret that the musicals that were offered this fall/winter season were from hunger. With the exception of a brilliant revival of Follies, which is unfortunately closing way too soon, the pickings have been mighty slim. From the abysmal revival of Godspell to the disastrous Bonnie & Clyde, there has been nothing as fresh, delightful and entertaining as Lysistrata Jones. Finally, a musical that can be enjoyed for the holiday season and beyond has arrived just in time. Based on Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, Douglas Carter Beane has updated the storyline and set it in a modern-day gymnasium where the Athens men’s basketful team has lost every game for over 30 years. Lysistrata Jones comes to the university and takes it upon herself to create a cheerleading squad to urge the boys on to victory. Upon losing the game, that is when Lyssie and the girls decide to withhold sex from the players until they will finally win a game. Thus begins the complication and the fun. Playwright Mr. Beane has written a delicious book for this musical, full of wit and genuine humor. (We at StageZine.com never reveal any of the funny quotes in a review because we feel it is a spoiler alert, and they are best enjoyed when hearing them fresh within the context of the show.).

  • Social Media, Fan Culture, and Postmodern Presence in Musical by Maya Abbott-Smith — 5
Social Media, Fan Culture, and Postmodern Presence in Musical by Maya Abbott-Smith — 5 Everyone’s A Critic: Social Media, Participatory Fan Culture, and Postmodern Presence in Broadway Musicals Maya Abbott-Smith Strategic Communications Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract Amy Jensen’s theory of participatory fan culture, and Chantal Pontbriand’s concept of postmodern presence, each help explain how Broadway musicals are able to encourage online buzz. Fans using social media interact with shows, and they are sometimes being noticed by those in charge of the production. This study explores how fans and audience members interact with three Broadway musicals through social media, and how that contrasts with how theatre critics in traditional media perceive these productions. By doing so, these fans are able to create narratives that can drown out the views of critics. I. Introduction The Broadway musical is an American icon that has been an entertainment source since the late 1800s. From long-running hits like Wicked and The Phantom of the Opera, to new productions like Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton, Broadway musicals are big, bold and entertaining while reflecting relevant topics in today’s society. Musicals are an extremely costly venture in time and money, as noted in The New York Times: Bigger-scale musicals tend to cost $10 million to $15 million these days. (The hit musical “The Book of Mormon” cost about $9 million.) The most lavishly produced musicals are even higher: DreamWorks has confirmed that “Shrek the Musical” cost $25 million to mount on Broadway, while the producers of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” have confirmed that the show cost $75 million to stage (Healy, 2011).
