Coverage Area: This register covers the Watsonian vice-county (vc) 110, the Outer Hebrides, which includes the whole area of the Western Isles administrative area, including the outliers of the St Kilda group and North Rona and Sula Sgeir. Time period: The standard approach to rare plant registers is to take a defined period for plant records. In the case of the Outer Hebrides, however, there has not been good coverage of the area in any time period. Additionally, the amount of environmental change is relatively small (the main changes are associated with the loss of machair cultivation and changes in grazing). So we have decided to include all records regardless of their date. There are substantial challenges in assigning many old records to specific sites, and where the site is not specific, this has been given as an "unlocalised record". This also applies to a number of records from Biological Records Centre for which we have very little detail. Zones: as well as grid references, records are given zones, which are defined in the frontispiece to Pankhurst & Mullin (1991) Flora of the Outer Hebrides. These give an impression of how widespread species are more quickly than from grid references. Records are sorted by zone within species. 2. Inclusion criteria Species are considered for inclusion in this list if they are native in the Outer Hebrides. A few introduced records are included for species which are otherwise native. Species which have been considered are included if they have 10 or fewer 'sites' - a site is a moveable 1km square, so two locations have to be more than 1km apart in general to be separate sites. Species in 3 or fewer sites are designated rare, and in 4-10 sites are designated scarce (this is a standard for BSBI Rare Plant registers); we have also added "frequent" for 11-20 sites and "common" for 21 or more. Microspecies and varieties accepted for the Vice County Census Catalogue are included, but in many cases these will probably prove to be under-recorded rather than truly rare. This list does not yet take account of new taxonomy in Sell & Murrell (2006), particularly for Hieracium. Species are also included if they are listed in the latest Red Data List for vascular plants (Cheffings & Farrell 2005), or if they are Nationally Rare (in 15 or fewer hectads (10km squares) in Britain), or Nationally Scarce (in 16- 100 hectads in Britain), regardless of how many sites they are found in in the Outer Hebrides. The BSBI's guidelines also suggest the inclusion of taxa endemic or near-endemic in Britain. The only additional taxon from this source is Gentianella amarella ssp septentrionalis. A few Red Data List species are so frequent in the Outer Hebrides that we have not attempted to list all the records, but information relating to specific sites for planning and conservation may be obtained from the authors. Because we have included all records regardless of their date, we have not tried to assess decline. Therefore no species are included on decline grounds if they do not meet the criteria above. We may re-assess this in a future edition. However, a general impression can be gained by comparing 1987+ records with all records (all records includes 1987+ too). Note that these are strongly affected by variations in recording. 3. Updating The register should be updated regularly; this version includes all records made up to 2004, and some subsequent updates. To check whether there is more detail from recent records, contact the authors (see below). If you have records which either update those contained in this register, or are additional to them, we should be very pleased to receive them - again use the contacts below. Experience in working with this list suggests that the most likely changes are for species to be in more sites than given here (since there is uneven coverage of botanical recording in the Outer Hebrides). Which species will drop off the list will only be seen with further field work. 4. Contacts For more information contact: Paul Smith ([email protected]) or Richard Pankhurst ([email protected]).
