Action in Devon, mosaics and ‘wishsticks’ at the School In April, the children in Class 3 made a residential visit to Yenworthy Lodge near Oare in North Devon. The weather was variable, but it didn’t stop the children from enjoying rock-climbing, waterfall-climbing, rock- pooling, mountain biking, coasteering, and team- building activities. They also built fires and shelters, and learned survival skills which included eating wild plants (with supervision). The children were accompanied by several members of staff who all joined in, and Mrs Jupp was glad to report that everyone slept soundly (eventually!), made the most of Becky Paton, the mosaic, and helpers every opportunity, and had a fantastic time! During early May, the mosaic artist Becky EURO 2012 Football Competition Paton (see right) came to talk to the children at a day’s seminar about her commission by the Parish Council Raising money for FOSHS to produce a mosaic of the Village, outlining its Entry forms can be obtained from: features and local history. The finished project will be Peter Floyd, Lee-Way, New Road about 3 metres in diameter, and the children were very Caron Glenn at Stanton Harcourt School interested to be able to talk to her about this exciting The Village Shop and The Harcourt Arms work. During the visit, the whole school was involved Olivia Harris or any FOSHS committee member in designing and producing a beautiful poppy made out Closing date is Friday 8 June of mosaic tiles in the Jubilee colours – red, white and blue. The Art Representative, Heather McCulloch, was also present during that day and was most impressed by the children’s ideas and enthusiastic input. On a separate occasion, the Bunnies and Foundation Stage children enjoyed a fruit and vegetable tasting session as part of the ‘healthy eating’ and ‘learning about different cultures and foods’ project. All children were given a delicious-looking plate of various delicacies and after a show of hands about what they liked best, strawberries came out firmly on top ... whereas avocado was at the bottom of the scale. The children have been taught how to use their five senses and have had a fun time during the ongoing ‘Forest School’ project, in which they are being taught outside about being safe in an outdoor environment and enjoy different activities such as ‘bug hunts’, all under the close supervision of the teachers and expert Naomi Crawford, a parent at the school who very kindly helps with this programme. A very popular activity was the production of ‘wishsticks’ – the children made notes of their personal wishes and wrapped them with string around sticks they found in the wood.
