Abstract: This research has as object of study the canvas of the Brazilian artist Oscar Pereira da Silva (1865-1939), entitled The night, executed in 1927. Through the analysis of documents such as catalogs, images and, above all, periodicals, we seek indicate through the trajectory of the canvas, its own history and its connection with a production of allegorical paintings in Brazil in the period that runs through the first Brazilian republic. Through this analysis, it was possible to verify how complex the genre presents itself, if thought as such, permeating other genres of painting. As can be seen above all, during the first Brazilian Republic, where allegorical painting gains strength when it becomes the new “face” for the representation of this then new political institution in Brazil, through the female figure. It also addresses formal aspects of the work, as well as the representation of the naked female body, especially in Pereira da Silva's production, which allows one to look at the performance of other artists from the São Paulo capital, realizing how the artistic scene was presented at that time and how much Oscar productions approached or distanced from these. i BLOWING BUBBLES, BURSTING BULLES: AN ANALYSIS OF MANET’S BOY BLOWING BUBBLES AND THE POLITICIZATION OF HOMO BULLA _______________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board _______________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS _______________________________________________________________________ by Shana R. Cooperstein May 2013 Thesis Approvals: Therese Dolan, Thesis Advisor, Department of Art History Ashley West, Department of Art History ii © by Shana Cooperstein 2013 All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the political dimensions surrounding visual and literary allusions to soap bubbles. Traditionally, iconographic studies consider soap bubbles within the history of northern Baroque vanitas, attaching to bubbles notions of ephemerality and transience. Building on these interpretations, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French artists and writers created a complex metaphor for soap bubbles that relied on their impermanence and fragility, as well as their illusory nature. By coupling the earliest conceptual meanings of soap bubbles with their almost imperceptible formal properties, the bubble blower came to symbolize deceivers, or figures creating illusions or delusions. Eventually, this transformed vanitas symbolism became harnessed to political critiques and representative of chimerical assertions of papal authority, calumny, and false promises of liberal reform. I not only describe the alternative meanings associated with soap bubbles in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century France, but also I situate Edouard Manet’s Les Bulles de savon (1867) within this trajectory. While most scholars interpret Manet’s painting and accompanying prints as a continuation of, and legacy to, the Dutch vanitas tradition, I illustrate how the artistic and political milieu in which Manet worked mirrored earlier criticisms employing allusions to bubbles.
