Small urban streams are an important BGI component that is often underused, especially regarding stormwater management. The aim of this research is to explore small urban streams and their integration into BGI in the urban area of Niš, and to point out the benefits that their restoration would bring in functional, social and environmental terms. Results of this study show that Niš urban ar ea has significant “Blue” natural capital in small streams, and that standing planning documents support the creation of BGI to some extent. These are good grounds for the implementation of BGI in urban planning practice. Introduction
Notes Introduction 1. We use the term “state socialism” in the title of and introduction to this book to refer to the type of political, economic, and social welfare system that existed in postwar Eastern Europe. This was different from the social democracy practiced by some Western European democracies, which, while providing social services and benefits to the population did not advocate the complete overthrow of the market economy and the leading role of one political party. At the same time, since the parties in power during this period identified as communist and because policymakers, scholars, and people of the region often employ the term “communist” or “socialist” when referring to the system (political, economic, and/or social welfare) that existed in postwar Eastern Europe, we recognize the validity of using these terms. 2. -

NIŠ SPEECH IN THE LIGHT OF THE NEWEST SOCIOLINGUISTIC RESEARCH a Tatjana G. Trajković University of Niš, Faculty of Philosophy, Serbian Language Department, Niš, Serbia [email protected] Abstract The new approach to the research of the speech of Niš is explained in this paper, in light of the newest sociolinguistic research. Since the research of the speech of Niš so far were determined by the approaches chosen by the authors and having in mind the newly made conditions in which the city of Niš changed in the demographic sense, the possibility of a newer, more modern and more encompassing exploration of the Niš vernacular has arisen. The goal of the research, the choice of the informers, the manner in which the material was gathered, the methodology of the treatment of the gathered material and the presentation of the results is presented. Following the suggested steps in the sociolinguistic approach to the speech of Niš, a new and more reliable representation of the speech of Niš today would be arrived at. Key words: Niš speech, city speech, sociolinguistics, Serbian language, Prizren-Timok dialect area. -

The Gypsy Cemetery in Donji Komren Udc 316.723:236(=914.99)+393(=914.99)
FACTA UNIVERSITATIS Series: Philosophy and Sociology Vol. 2, No 8, 2001, pp. 445 - 455 THE GYPSY CEMETERY IN DONJI KOMREN UDC 316.723:236(=914.99)+393(=914.99) Dragan Todorović1, Dragoljub B. Đorđević2 1Faculty of Philosophy, Niš 2Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Niš Abstract. The typology of the Romany cemeteries is that the Romanies are buried at (a) their own Gypsy cemetery that is physically separated from the so-called Serbian one, (b) their own cemetery, the so-called Gypsy cemetery that is physically connected to the so-called Serbian one, (c) the so-called Serbian cemetery together with the other citizens, and (d) some other cemetery outside their place of residence. The people of Donji Komren are not to blame for having a separate Gypsy cemetery since, on one hand, the Romanies were always in recent or - sometimes for centuries - in the far past buried at a separate and from their place of residence distant terrain for at least three reasons: (a) severe segregation and stigmatization of the majority, (b) the internal characteristics of their own culture and their culture of death, and (c) turbulent historical events. On the other hand, except for the burials outside their place of residence (type d), the other types of cemeteries (a, b, and c) are utterly legitimate and desirable. The reason for this might be that the first Romany who died in Donji Komren was buried - at some time between the first two world wars - on the northern- western side of a small hill named "Grobljišta" for inherent reasons peculiar to the Romany culture of death.
