I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

    USD BASEBALL HALL OF FAME -The Chet & Marguerite Pagni Family Athletic Hall of Fame John Cunningham (1962-1998) No single person has done more for the USD baseball program than Hall of Fame head coach John ‘J.C.’ Cunningham. Directing the Toreros’ program be- tween 1964-98, Cunningham totaled 843 career victories, ranking him in the top forty in all-time victories among Division I coaches. Under his guidance, USD enjoyed sixteen winning seasons, including two World Series appearances in 1971 and 1978. Cunningham is not only in the USD Athletic Hall of Fame, but is also honored as a Hall of Famer by the American Baseball Coaches Associa- tion. His teams won 30 or more games seven times, with four of his squads advancing to post-season play. His 1971 and 1978 squads won regional titles and advanced to the Division II College World Series. He was named District VIII Coach of the Year in 1971. In 1979, the Toreros moved into the Division I ranks and later joined the West Coast Conference in 1985. Over the next 14 years, Cunningham won 343 WCC games. He was twice named the WCC Coach of the Year (1993 & 1998). USD’s home field (Cunningham Baseball Stadium) is named after the legendary coach, who was essential in its construction. Cunningham was recently the recipient of the 2005 Lefty Gomez Award, one of the most prestigious awards in all of amateur baseball. He has remained involved with the USD athletic department as its Director of Transportation since his final year of coaching in 1998.

Pre-Royals Managerial Career Managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003 before being relieved of his duties on September 15, 2008... compiled a 457-502 mark as the Brewers skipper...named as the Milwaukee manager on October 29, 2002. Turned the Brewers around after going 68-94 in his fi rst season in 2003...steadily increased the win total and led the club to a 83-79 record and a second-place fi nish in the N.L. Central in 2007, marking Milwaukee’s fi rst winning season since 1992. The Brewers were 83-67 in 2008 when he was dismissed and on their way to winning the N.L. Wild Card, the Brewers fi rst playoff appearance since their World Series campaign in 1982, when Ned was a catcher on the club. Was a member of Tony La Russa’s 2005 National League All-Star coaching staff...the game was played at Detroit’s Comerica Park with the American League emerging victorious, 7-5.
