http://rendedpress.blogspot.com Everyone’s Grumpy Under That Hill . and a River Runs Through It (written for the Swords & Dorkery Iron Chef Contest) a gonzo monty haul railroad scenario with no rhyme or reason because that’s just the way I roll by Matthew W. Schmeer The list of TSR 1992 Series Collector Cards used to throw this thing together, with a summary of each card, appears at the end of this scenario. This scenario assumes familiarity/access to irst edition The Fiend Folio and the ability to convert monsters to whatever edition you happen to favor. An Internet connection is handy as well, as there are lots of linky‐links to follow for more (dubious) info; the links are highlighted in blue. Scenario Background The river goes into the mountain. That’s never good. There’s rumors in the village about ten miles upstream about what’s in there—strange sounds, minor earthquakes, boulders that pick themselves off the ground, weird things, stuff of nightmares, etcetera, etcetera, but the locals would rather stay the hell away because hey, what you don’t know won’t kill you, right? But you? No, you’re not afraid. You are a party of ADVENTURERS! You are no mere striplings, afraid of rumors and things that go bump in the night, because, after all, if it can make a bump in the night, then it has a body, and if it has a body, then it can bleed, and if it can bleed, then you can kill it and take its stuff. -

THE LOST CHRONICLES VOLUME THREE Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman Astinus, Chronicler of the History of Krynn, writes: On the Twenty-sixth Day of the Month of Mishamont, Year 352 AC, in the city of Neraka, the Temple of Takhisis falls. The Dragon Queen is banished from the world. Her armies go down to defeat. Much of the credit for this victory is given to the Heroes of the Lance, who fought valiantly for the Forces of Light. History should note, however, that the Light would have been doomed to failure if not for one man who chose to walk in Darkness. PROLOGUE wo legends of Krynn are essential to the understanding of the plot. Many variations of these legends can be found. Every bard tells them somewhat differently. We have chosen these versions as being the closest to what actually occurred, though, as with most legends, the truth of the matter will likely never be known. Excerpts from “A Child’s Garden of Tales of Krynn,” translated from the Elvish by Quivalen Soth: The Story of Berem and Jasla A Tale of Love and Sacrifice Long ago, at the end of the Second Dragon War, the valiant knight, Huma Dragonsbane, drove Queen Takhisis into the Abyss. He forced her to swear an oath before the High God that she would not return to the world to upset the delicate balance between good 7 DRAGONLANCE The Lost Chronicles and evil. The gods believed that an oath taken before the High God was so powerful that not even the Queen of Darkness would dare break it. -

Walking unheard, his footfalls were sucked into the vast darkness all around him. Bertrem indulged in a rare flight of fancy as he glanced at the seemingly endless rows of books and scrolls that were part of the Chronicles of Astinus and detailed the his- tory of this world, the history of Krynn. “It’s like being sucked into time,” he thought, sighing as he glanced at the still, silent rows. He wished, briefly, that he were being sucked away somewhere, so that he did not have to face the difficult task ahead of him. “All the knowledge of the world is in these books,” he said to himself wistfully. “And I’ve never found one thing to help make the intrusion upon their author any easier.” Bertrem came to a halt outside the door to summon his courage. His flowing Aesthetic’s robes settled themselves about him, falling into correct and orderly folds. His stomach, however, refused to fol- low the robes’ example and lurched about wildly. Bertrem ran his hand across his scalp, a nervous gesture left over from a younger age, before his chosen profession had cost him his hair. What was bothering him? he wondered bleakly—other than go- ing in to see the Master, of course, something he had not done since . since . He shuddered. Yes, since the young mage had nearly died upon their doorstep during the last war. -
