Numbers 6. 24-26 At the time of writing this short letter, we are still in lockdown due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19. Albeit, with restrictions slightly looser than they were the last time that I wrote to you. We are still learning to operate within a new normal. We are sharing less space and life is far from convenient. We notice this perhaps most acutely in regards to retail purchasing and social interactions: we are being asked to queue as we enter shops and we are still limited to who, how and where we can see our friends and loved ones. Yet, perhaps this slowing down of life is no bad thing. Perhaps, being more intentional with our decisions, particularly regarding consumerism, will cause society to re-orientate and re-prioritise the way it approaches life? Maybe, when we settle into a steadier rhythm, it will be one which is less concerned with self, and more concerned with the needs of those around us. I’m not the most politically vocal of my ordained colleagues. However, I was struck by the recent words of Archbishop Justin Welby, who called Continued page 3 Parish Church of St Wilfrid Ellasdale Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 2SG https://wilfrid.com Vicarage (office closed) 01243 930183 [email protected] SaintWilfridBognor Registered Charity No. 1142723 Magazine & Pewsheet articles/ pictures; please email [email protected] with your name, date submitted and phone number. Speaking out against the imposition of extensive austerity measures, the Archbishop appealed for a vision for society to be set, in which justice and righteousness were the key stones of common life. Furthermore, that social care and tackling mental health, were prioritised. I was also struck by the recent words of His Royal Highness, Prince William. Contributing to a Church of England online service, Prince William called on people to embrace the "Christian teachings of faith, hope and love" as we "navigate our way through these uncertain times". In both the words of Archbishop Justin and those of Prince William, there is a call being made for us to set a vision for, and embrace society around, the teachings of Jesus. May we each spend some time in the coming days reconsidering our own approach to life. May we each recommit ourselves to playing our part in entering this next period of our history, with a vision that embraces the teachings of Jesus. In Psalm 119 verse 2, we are told that the ones who keep the ways of God and seek Him with their whole heart, will be blessed. So as you recommit yourself to keeping the ways of God and seeking Him with your whole heart, and having a vision for embracing your life around the teachings of Jesus, may you receive the abundant blessing of God. With our love, Joel and Lella Mennie ****** On Ascension Day in years prior to COVID-19, we would have paused in our Ascension Day service to remember Miss Helen Dey, at one time Matron of St. Barts, for her generous gift of the Christ Ascendant statue by sculptor Uli Nymptsch. The historical research on the sculptor and what had been the anonymous donor was done by John Hawkins and very sadly John died on 22nd May - see the tribute page 31. 3 A tribute to the NHS I’ll tell you a tale that’s been recently written, of a powerful army so great it saved Britain They didn’t have bombs and they didn’t have planes, they fought with their hearts and they fought with their brains. They didn’t have bullets - armed with just a mask, we sent them to war with one simple task. To show us the way to lead and inspire us, to protect us from harm and write off the virus It couldn’t be stopped by our bullet proof vest, an invisible army that invaded our chests. So we called on our weapons, our soldiers in blue, all doctors and nurses, your country needs you. We clapped on our streets, hearts bursting with pride, as they went off to war while we stayed inside. They struggled at first as they searched for supplies, but they stared down the virus in the white’s of it’s eyes. They leapt from the trenches and didn’t think twice, some never came back – the ultimate price. So tired, so weary yet still they fought on, as the virus was beaten and the battle was won. The many of us owe so much to the few, the brave and the bold, our heroes in blue. So let’s line the streets and remember our debt, we love you our heroes – LEST WE FORGET. Sally Williams (see page 12) has sent this poem.
