Baseball Blurbs by Bruce | Tuesday | July 7, 2015 | Vs Bend Elks Page 1 2015 BASEBALL BLURBS BY BRUCE | TUESDAY | JULY 7, 2015 | VS BEND ELKS PAGE 1 BASEBALL BLURBS BY BRUCE Bruce Bennett, AppleSox Statistician Bend 7, Wenatchee 2 last night. Bend (23-5) at Wenatchee (11-14) 7:05 tonight. Miscellany - Half the season is over. Last night was game 29 of a 58-game schedule. - After tonight over half the home league schedule is complete...14 down 13 to go. - Two-thirds of the teams in the league have losing records. - Shy of a couple complete collapses, the races for first in the estW and South are all over but the shoutin’...and the season is not quite half over. Bellingham and Bend have huge leads and with any kind of steady play should take the gold in their respective divisions. Doubleheaders Oh the AppleSox have played quite a few, but except for reschedules due to rain, twin bills have be- come a thing of the past. - In the days of the Pacific International League from 2000 to ‘05, there 35 doubleheaders, 25 league, 8 nonleague and 2 half-and-half (once in 2000 and again in 2001 one game was league and one non- league). All 35 were originally scheduled as twin features. - Since the advent of the West Coast League in 2005 there have been 9 doubleheaders, only two of which were originally scheduled, the others all due to inclement weather forcing rescheduled affairs. - The two originally scheduled since 2005 were both a while ago - 2005 at Kitsap and 2006 at Aloha (now Corvallis). - The last scheduled double-bill at home was Bend in July 2004. - The last weather forced event at home was the Tacoma Cardinals in June 2006. - In their 44 doubleheaders the AppleSox are 49-39, 25-23 at home and 24-16 on the road. - They have swept 14 of them, split 21 and dropped both games 9 times. - The last two-contest day was at Medford in June 2013 due to rain. July 7 Games A home game on the 7th, not so common. Eight of the dozen games on this date have been on the road. The Sox are 1-2 vs. Bend, a win at home in ‘09 and doubleheader loss in Oregon in ‘12. They are 7-5 overall, 6-5 league, 1-0 nonleague, 3-1 at home and 4-4 away. Who’s Hot: Bend has won 16 of 18. Bellingham has won 6 straight and 7 of 8. Kelowna has won 7 of 9. Who’s Not: Victoria has lost 7 of 9. Kitsap has lost 7 of 8. Klamath Falls has lost 7 of 8. Cowlitz has lost 6 of 7. Nanaimo NightOwls Baseball Club PO Box 39084, Nanaimo, BC V9R 7B7 Phone: 250-889-5204 MEDIA RELEASE July 15, 2020, For release, 7:45pm Serauxmen Stadium, Nanaimo, B.C. Nanaimo NightOwls to take flight in 2021 Nanaimo’s WCL team naming unveiled – NightOwls, with Nanaimo Bars cameos for all day games NANAIMO, B.C. – The lights, the history, the proud First Nations lore. And the world-famous dessert that helped make the City of Nanaimo a household name, all combined. The ownership group of the expansion team for the 2021 season, set to call historic Serauxmen Stadium home in the West Coast League, along with the team’s Founding Sponsor, Island Savings, is proud to announce the name of the top Island sports team north of the capital. The Nanaimo NightOwls are born – steeped in community pride, harkening back to the Nanaimo Owls team that was successful a century ago, featuring a grey owl in the logo with piercing, determined eyes. ‘Night’ has been added to recognize the City of Nanaimo’s work in making this all happen. “First of all, the name Nanaimo NightOwls is a tribute to the City of Nanaimo, for the now-completed field lighting project that will allow for night games at Serauxmen Stadium, not just for the WCL but for all local user groups,” said Jim Swanson, who will be the first General Manager of the NightOwls. “Without lights, there is no team, and the city’s contribution is forever a foundation to the WCL coming to Nanaimo. The grey owl depicted, in Snuneynuxw First Nations lore, is a messenger with a nasty streak.” The team colours will be navy, gold and white, with an all-white home set with ‘NightOwls’ scripted across the chest, and a road uniform with grey pants and navy-primary tops and ‘Nanaimo’ in block letters.

  • On Friday, May 8, the West Coast League and Its Member Teams Released the Following Statement Regarding Their 2020 Season…
Media Contact: NEWS Rob Neyer 503.233.2490 For Immediate Release West Coast League On Friday, May 8, the West Coast League and its member teams released the following statement regarding their 2020 season… The West Coast League is closely monitoring the Covid-19 policies and announcements issued by federal, state, provincial, and local authorities in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Considering the latest information at hand, the WCL has postponed our scheduled June 5 opening, and we’re now targeting early July for the return of baseball to our member cities. As we prepare for our sixteenth season, we’re constantly keeping two things in mind: the health and safety of our players, staff, and fans; and bringing back the Great Game of Baseball to our communities. This week, Oregon Governor Kate Brown said fans will likely not be allowed at sporting events until October; Wednesday in British Columbia, the announcement of “re-open guidelines” dimmed our hopes for league games north of the border. As a result of these and other governmental directives, we anticipate that the WCL’s Bend Elks, Corvallis Knights, Kelowna Falcons, and Victoria HarbourCats will soon join the Bellingham Bells in canceling their 2020 seasons, while not precluding the possibility of other events this summer. Meanwhile, the league’s other teams continue to pursue all their options, with the potential for attracting a great number of terrific collegiate-level players. While the existing constraints make it clear that 2020 will not look like a traditional West Coast League season, all of our teams—whether playing this season or not—remain committed to bringing baseball to our loyal fans, both this summer and in 2021.
