The ownership group of the expansion team for the 2021 season, set to call historic Serauxmen Stadium home in the West Coast League, along with the team’s Founding Sponsor, Island Savings, is proud to announce the name of the top Island sports team north of the capital. Considering the latest information at hand, the WCL has postponed our scheduled June 5 opening, and we’re now targeting early July for the return of baseball to our member cities. As we prepare for our sixteenth season, we’re constantly keeping two things in mind: the health and safety of our players, staff, and fans; and bringing back the Great Game of Baseball to our communities. This week, Oregon Governor Kate Brown said fans will likely not be allowed at sporting events until October; Wednesday in British Columbia, the announcement of “re-open guidelines” dimmed our hopes for league games north of the border. As a result of these and other governmental directives, we anticipate that the WCL’s Bend Elks, Corvallis Knights, Kelowna Falcons, and Victoria HarbourCats will soon join the Bellingham Bells in canceling their 2020 seasons, while not precluding the possibility of other events this summer. Meanwhile, the league’s other teams continue to pursue all their options, with the potential for attracting a great number of terrific collegiate-level players. While the existing constraints make it clear that 2020 will not look like a traditional West Coast League season, all of our teams—whether playing this season or not—remain committed to bringing baseball to our loyal fans, both this summer and in 2021.

After a year hiatus, the two-game series returns June 19-20 at Oregon State’s Goss Stadium. The North roster features four seniors from Metro League champion Westview (14-3), including Metro League Player of the Year shortstop Mason Guerra and Metro League Pitcher of the Year Braeden Munger. Guerra, an Oregon State commit, led 6A in OBP (.701) and batting (.592) and hit 6 homers. Munger, who is headed to Lower Columbia College in the fall, went 5-1, posted a 0.44 ERA and struck out 46 over 32 innings pitched this spring. The Wildcats are the most represented program in the Oregon All-Star Series. PIL champion Grant, whose 17-1 mark was tops in 6A, is represented on the North roster by PIL Player of the Year shortstop Spencer Scott and PIL Pitcher of the Year Kaden Segel. Scott led 6A in home runs with 10 and hit .466 with 35 RBIs while playing a stellar short and recording an OPS of 1.721. Segel did not allow an earned run in his final three starts vs. Barlow, Clackamas and Sherwood, went 3-0 and posted a 1.75 ERA.

John and Corey both recently coached their final high school game this past spring.Arntson will be added to the North coaching lineup of Matt Bailie of Westview, Matt Kabza of Grant and Ray Pearson of Lakeridge while Nicholsen will join the South coaching staff made up of Taylor Blair of West Salem, Don Lien of West Albany and Kenny Niles of Churchill. Arntson will continue at Clackamas High School in his new role of athletic director and assistant principal. John had a 24 year run at Clackamas. In that time, Arntson won 420 games, 9 league titles and three state titles (2008, 2010 and 2017). His 2021 Cavaliers club went an impressive 16-2. “Coach Arntson is a class act and we’re going to miss him on the field,” said Lakeridge head baseball coach Ray Pearson. Nicholsen will continue as athletic director at North Eugene. He was a coach for 28 years and spent the last 23 years as the skipper of the Highlanders. Corey’s record at North Eugene was 325-241 and he won 8 league titles and a state championship in 2010. “Corey was the perfect guy to lead North Eugene for over two decades,” said Churchill head baseball coach Kenny Niles.
