Dueling Fundamentals Alex Lapins

This class starts with several buzzing exercises followed by selections from Lapins's "Dueling Fundamentals for Two Tubas,” available from Mountain Peak Music. Participants will have access to PDFs of the exercises (linked in the session’s chat), including versions for tuba as well as euphonium. These are advanced fundamentals exercises in two voices, with the author playing the bottom line, so it simulates playing through the exercises with the author. Make sure to be connected to quality external speakers in order to get the most out of this class.

Underrepresentation of Higher Voices in Tuba Multiphonic Literature Samantha Lake

Speck Hope Salmonson

Metal Concurrences Carle Wirshba

Multiphonic music for tuba persistently ignores performers who have high voices, despite past recommendations for flexibility in compositions. High voices are seen as the performers’ problem rather than an opportunity for new multiphonic sounds and textures. This presentation includes premiere performances of works for unaccompanied tuba featuring multiphonics by composers Hope Salmonson and Carle Wirshba.

A Holophrastic Method for Teaching the Tuba and Euphonium Scott Watson

Of interest to current or future music educators, college professors, as well those with private studios, this clinic will introduce this approach to the audience. This method has the use of holophrastic (words or phrases full of meaning) words, phrases, or slogans that through repetition, are soon associated by the student with essential techniques and concepts of brass playing. The clinic will give those attending listings of possible holophrastic utterances to use in their teaching as well as the pedagogy behind their selection.

From Point A to Point B Benjamin Vasko

"From Point A to Point B" is the beginning of a mission to de-mystify jazz language for tuba/euphonium players. Real-time failures and triumphs have aided in the development of a systematic approach to navigating the commercial terrain. In this class, Vasko discusses what it means to play in an ensemble as well as specific skills needed to succeed in and out of jazz. The back half of the presentation is a play-along where Vasko will walk everyone through his method of navigating changes and playing basslines. Pull up a horn, throw your Zoom on mute, and give it a go!

The BALTIMORE BRASS was founded in 2000 by graduates of the Peabody Conservatory of Music over a few beers in a dimly lit underground stone-cellar known as Brewer’s Art, locally famous for their own superb craft beer. Since then, the ensemble has taken many twists and turns to grow into the high- caliber yet musically diverse ensemble today. Some people recognize them as a refined chamber ensemble and others recognize them as a fierce brass band supplemented with and percussionists. A native of Waukegan, IL, DAVID BANDMAN is a graduate of The University of North Texas where he played trombone in the One O'Clock Lab Band. As a euphonium player he was the winner of the first ITEC international jazz euphonium competition. Currently, he is retired after twenty-four years of active duty with the The Air Force Band, Washington D.C. Since retiring he has been active writing and recording music. He released his first jazz euphonium CD "Can I Play Too" where he arranged the music of Herbert L. Clarke for solo euphonium and big band. "Solo work reflects musicianship by a truly great soloist!…tailored made everything "fit" perfectly and are superb… A very unique recording" - Sammy Nestico. "His second release, "Mendez" is entire album of original music inspired by the style and technical wizardry of Rafael Mendez. “From the outset, he wanted to create a recording that was a complete . This album is the perfect showcase for David's incredible musicianship and unique skill set. All of the selections are scored for a solo euphonium accompanied by a seven-piece brass ensemble with percussion. Once again, he's dancing on the fine line between inspirational and demoralizing… it's that good.” This recording won the ITEA Roger Bobo award for recording excellence: Solo classical euphonium. “Burn Notice” is his latest project. This is a high-energy jazz/rock/funk recording. “Nobody plays the euphonium like he can, and he's always looking for ways to yank the instrument out of it's usually nerdy pigeon hole and put it firmly where everyone least expects it. Bandman has, once again, liberally applied a large dose of his evil genius to his turbocharged, high-octane compositions. He wears even more hats than usual on this recording, putting his guitar, electric bass and keyboard sequencing chops to work on all ten tracks. That's in addition to composing and arranging all original music; recording and editing the entire album; playing all the trombone parts and, of course, providing us with superhuman euphonium solos.”

Through countless activities in Germany and abroad the quartet has established its position in the world of music. repertoire of the Melton Tuba Quartett. Through their workshops, masterclasses and the debut CD “Premiere” the attention of renown composers was drawn to the four musicians. Meanwhile there had been three more CD publications available: “Lazy Elephants” (1995), “Power” (1999) and “What a Wonderful World” (2005). Because of the high demand of works composed especially for the Melton Tuba Quartett, Bruno Uetz publishes and distributes the music series “Edition Melton Tuba Quartett”. In 2011 the Melton Tuba Quartett has opened a new chapter in music history: in time for the world premiere of the groundbraking new work “Grand Concerto 4 Tubas” by American tubist and composer John Stevens a fifth CD was released, a coproduction with the Duisburg Philharmonic under the baton of Carl St. Clair. Concert performances with many prestigious German symphony orchestras followed in the years after. In 2016 the highly successful and entertaining 6th CD production went on sale: “Featuring the Meltons”! And in 2017 the second ever original composition for tuba quartet and symphony orchestra had its world premiere: “Concerto grosso Nr.1” by German composer Stefan Heucke. We are WHEN TUBA COME ONE, one of the UK’s most exciting and innovative brass chamber groups as well as being an internationally acclaimed tuba quartet.

As an ensemble we aim to bring low brass music to a wider audience. We work hard to make something of a niche genre into an accessible medium to audiences of all different backgrounds and musical persuasions.

Through our dynamic and energetic performances, we are on a mission to convert as many listeners as possible to a genre they may not have expected to enjoy, and further increase its profile on the classical stage. As the most recent International Tuba and Euphonium Conference Ensemble Competition Champions, and the only European ensemble to reach the finals, we are uniquely positioned to display the best that our instruments have to offer, and show off their lesser-known qualities to audiences. Crucially, we believe that our unique sense of fun and love for music-making shines through in our performance and our aim is to pass some of that on to our audience.

Other contests we have won include the Bernard Brown Brass Ensemble Prize 2020 and Town Hall Symphony Hall Prize 2020.

In addition, we are excited to encourage and instigate the composition of new and diverse music for the genre, as well as increasing the repertoire further through arranging and commissioning arrangements of pieces from across the musical spectrum. We believe that the tuba quartet is a far more versatile and exciting ensemble than the current repertoire would suggest and hope to spearhead a diversification of the repertoire.

Connie Weldon established the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMA TUBA ENSEMBLE in 1960. The ensemble first rehearsed and performed a limited repertoire as the spirit moved them. But due to the enthusiasm and leadership of Miss Weldon, and the farsightedness of the University Administration, the Tuba Ensemble soon became a regularly scheduled, accredited performance ensemble. In 1969, in an effort to increase the depth of available repertoire for tuba ensembles, Connie Weldon, under the sponsorship of the University of Miami School of Music, held the first International Tuba Ensemble Composition Contest. Given her stature she was able to secure William Bell, the first well known tuba virtuoso, and Arnold Jacobs who at the time was the principal tuba in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and many believe to be the greatest orchestral tuba player of his generation, along with her, to serve as judges for the composition. Ultimately, there were over 100 compositions submitted. All entrants were required to submit anonymously to prevent bias between well established and new composers. The winner was a quartet code named “The Condor” and as it was subsequently known to UM Tuba Ensembles who performed the work. The work formally entitled “Quartet for Tubas” was written by Frank Lynn Payne and was published by Shawnee Press Inc. Other than the bass part, which is best performed by a BBb or CC, the other parts can be performed by a combination of Eb/F tubas and/or euphoniums. In another first, in the 1974-1975 school year, the UM Tuba Ensemble under Connie’s leadership recorded what is believed to be first album of tuba ensemble music. The alumni was a mix of original serious works, arrangements and “pop” covers such as “Baby Face”. In recognition of the Composition Contest the "Condor" was chosen for the first track of the album.
