RDV RDV06 ORION LOOK AT THINGS HOUSE 12 5.99 With their second appearance on Récit de Voyage Italian duo Orion deliver a full EP, full of lowkey atmospherics, cool hues and textures and sublime frequencies designed to caress your ear drums. The twosome, from Bologna, debuted on RDV Music back in March 2019, appearing on the Récit de Voyage various artists compilation. Since then they’ve been pushing out their brand of supple deep house via their own imprint Orion Records. Here we’re treated to four original cuts as the duo demonstrate their production prowess… The first track ‘Windom Earle’ (for all the Twin Peaks fans) encapsulates Orion’s ability to channel classic deep house tropes through their contemporary lens. Juxtaposing a dense low end with airy top layers, the cut tantalises your mind and moves your body at the same time. Chugging beats and subtle hypnotic melodies give this track its strong gravitational pull. Next up is ‘Samui’ which is powered by a rubbery bassline and morose wind section. This one tells a story, progression steadily as new arrangements and layers come into play emphasising different emotional strands. Wait for the analogue squelch… On the flip ‘Global Channel’ features a snub-nosed kick drum, which gives the track more urgency. Jazzy notes pop in and out of the background, playfully dancing with the other elements to create a multi-voice chorus. As the track develops Orion tease in additional hints of percussion to up the pace a little, while also using pads to amplify the track’s overall character. Lastly, it’s ‘JRB’, a spacious organic sounding production which showcases Orion’s dexterity. The atmosphere is light, shaving away the low frequencies to allow the top end to really flourish. A couple of vocal snippets are used to great effect, and the duo keep things very focused making this a repetitive, hypnotic trip into the deeper side of club music

POPCORN PR-018 PAUL CUT LE BAL DES DOUANIERS HOUSE 2LP 12.19 RECORDS (ALBUM) In 2016, talented artist Paul Cut released his first vinyl with Popcorn Records: the Basement Jam EP. This album foresaw the rise of the young producer, who has since piled up project on top of project, and record on top of record. One of the driving forces behind the D.KO label, and a (literal) key player of the Secret Value Orchestra band, Paul has also thrived on collaborations. Whether with Chez Damier, Jef K, Flabaire… They all fall under the spell of the young pianist’s skill, who has become in just a few years one of the leading figures of French house. In 2019, Paul joined house legend Larry Heard for his world tour, and multiplied appearances at famed festivals such as Glastonbury, Dimensions, DGTL or Printworks. In 2020 Popcorn Records is turning 10. And to mark the occasion, Paul is coming back to his beloved label to unveil his first album. More than a year of thought and work went into “Le Bal des Douaniers”. An album composed of 10 titles, which all reflect fragments of Paul Cut’s influences.

SKYLAX RECORDS LAX150 LUKAS LYRESTAM WHEN 2 BODIES BECOME HOUSE 12 6.09 1 Fresh off a run of vinyl releases supported by legends of the scene like Gerd Janson, Todd Edwards, Move D and DJ Sprinkles, Skylax Records are mighty proud to present Sweden’s Lukas Lyrestam for our 150th release. “When 2 Bodies Become 1” treads a fine line between raucous deep-house, balearic blues and straight-up sexy music. The opener “Raw Loop” channels classic Pepe Braddock vibes while “Moving Day” sounds like it could’ve come from the sonic experiments of a certain 90s house producer who loves to play keyboards. Lukas is a musician and singer first, which really shows on the flip side of the record – something which Mano Le Tough &Jimpster were very happy to support on a recent release for Clouded House.“Strange Beast” marries off-kilter chorus-kissed guitar riffs with a driving four-to-the floor arrangement while “2 Bodies Become 1” takes a step further away from house music to combine vintage new-order textures and shuffling deep-house. Lukas also builds digital synthesizers in his spare time, something which must’ve come in handy for “Bike Ride With U” an italo-banger closing out the record and sporting a very rubbery bassline. 03.03.2020 BASS CULTURE BCR063T D’JULZ LEMON JUICE HOUSE 12 6.19 POINT G. RMX CARL FINLOW RMX Bass Culture Records enters 2020 with a powerful remix package. Label boss D’Julz called up some of his good friends to step up and rework his own music for this nifty little collection. On the bill are Point G, Carl Finlow and Midnight Special, each bringing their own unique flavours to D’Julz’s original work. On side A we have Paris legend Point G remixing ‘Lemon Juice’. On the first of two versions, he delivers a typically avant-garde production with an elastic bassline and dank, mystical atmospherics. On the ‘dub version’ Point G gives us a heads down, minimal roller which is dense and deadly. Flip the record over and we have Carl Finlow’s punchy rework of ‘Wrecka Stow’. This feels very eighties with supersonic synths, laser beams and intergalactic FX bouncing all over the place. Emotive and highly danceable, it’s a seriously enjoyable remix. Closing the remix EP is Midnight Special’s reinterpretation of ‘Singularity’, which turns the solemn original into a jump up dancefloor banger, complete with razor sharp 4x4 beats and a highly contagious bouncing b-line. Hints of the original are there, but this isa total makeover that completely transforms the vibe of D’Julz’s production.

After starting to build his reputation featuring on different compilations like the Sofa Elsewhere LVI, shelTer, Risks Issues Opportunities and at first the punkish electronic Danzas Electricas Vol.2, Houschyar is on to deliver his debut album on Macadam Mambo. Originally from Dresden (DE) and now based in Istanbul, Marius (his real name) has made his experience in different places in East Europe, studying Fine Art and developing his skills and senses for music, to let emerge a singuliar style influenced by special electronic genres like Minimal-Synth, Berlin School, Krautrock, Electro and never too far from Punk. Produced in his living room in Ömer Hayyam - Tarlabasi, « Temmuz » must be taken as the soundtrack of a night ride through Istanbul by a warm summer night. On the A-side ‘Vocalized’ comes at us full throttle with a powerful bassline and crisp, punchy beats. MODULE RECORDS M160-1 KLASH POINT 888 MILES EP TECHNO 12 6.49 FRANCOIS X RMX The 888 Miles E.P. includes two original tracks, 888 Miles and 777 Miles, which both develop a psychological tension that leads to moments of euphoric liberation where the synths soar and allow the mind the wander, accompanied by a rhythmic groove. There is a slightly different sensitivity between the two tracks that you'll can easlyer constat. Then, don't forget, even if the approach sounds different, the soul remains the same. The other original track, 000 Miles, places you on a spacecraft, with ambient musicality sounding like it could have been generated by hydraulic pipes or air conditioning. This E.P. release also includes '888 Miles XXX Reshape', a deep techno remix by none other than the awesome Francois X. He's probably the best person to describe it: "I've known David & Kevin (Klash Point duo) for a while now and when they suggested that I produce a remix for them, it was natural to say yes. Cynosure returns with OHMS, a playfully uplifting collaboration from Mike Shannon and Ohm Hourani. The three-track EP features two originals laced with twisted drums and slippery synths, equally fitting for intergalactic exploration or a beachside sunrise. The original tracks’ intimately minimal production is complimented by a remix from Akufen of elegant deep house, making for a record that is both contemporary and classic. “Hightower PSA" slips out the gate with a carefree ambling baseline over a slow, swelling tide-like pad. Breezy, pulsing synth stabs pull the groove together while precise, quick hats and snares weave around buzzing tones like alien chatter. “Nova In The Sun” moves into steadier and darker territory: the bass hops between a stark kick-snare, with hats tastefully drizzled on top. But when singer Ilhem’s sultry voice cues subtle hand drums and squiggly echoes, the track transforms from a slick minimal affair into a soulful throwback. “Nova In The Sun (Akufen’s Aldo Nova In The Sun mix)” takes the female voice of the original and jumps right in with an upbeat staccato piano and swirling violins. A full-blown house arrangement ushers in lush strings, electric piano chords, and loosely fitting open hats and snares, all conspiring to bring a splash of joy to any peak-time crowd. On the whole, OHMS deliver a versatile EP that swaggers with a smile.

Also contributing to this milestone celebration are Leo Pol and Mr. G. For 10 years Bass Culture has maintained the highest standards when it comes to house and techno, releasing some seminal productions and becoming a go-to label for many of the scene’s true connoisseurs. This final installment of the 10 Years Of Bass Culture series keeps the quality as high as ever... D’Julz leads the way with ‘Synchronicity’ a smooth groove that wraps you up in its smoky atmosphere. Once it gets rolling a mystical, flute-driven riff drifts in, evoking Middle Eastern rhythms as it dances above the seductive bassline. Subtle percussive elements shimmy and slide around the main break loop, keeping the energy levels on point. Magnifique! Leo Pol steps up next with ‘Established 1991’. As the title suggests this cut has a retro-leaning outlook, conjuring up images of a warehouse rave on the outskirts of Paris in the early nineties. A deep bassline works alongside soft pads and strings with a stripped back drum arrangement. The beats really kick in just after the two minute mark, with the kicks and claps adding a dynamic layer to this simmering cut. Last, but certainly not least, the right honourable Mr. G steps up with ‘Now Is The Time!’. As you might expect, the production and energy on this cut are utterly compelling. A moody start is peppered with a classic reggae sample as the tension slowly builds.
