An evening with Marc Ribot: Silent Movies (solo) and Los Cubanos Postizos Fri, Nov 21 PROGRAM Royce Hall Silent Movies—solo set 8pm Marc Ribot Guitar/Vocals Intermission RUNNING TIME: Approximately 2 hours; Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos Marc Ribot Guitar, Vocals One intermission Anthony Coleman Keys Brad Jones Bass EJ Rodriguez Percussion Roberto Rodiguez Drums ABOUT THE ARTISTS MARC RIBOT – GUITAR/VOCALS Marc Ribot, who the New York Times describes as “a deceptively articulate artist who uses inarticulateness as an expressive device,” has released over 20 albums under his own name over a 30-year career, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez. His latest solo release, Silent Movies (Pi Recording 2010) has been described as a “down-in-mouth-near master piece” by the Village Voice and has MEDIA SPONSOR: landed on several Best of 2010 lists including the LA Times and critical praise across the board. 2013 saw the release of “Your Turn” (Northern Spy), the sophomore effort from Ribot’s post-rock/noise trio Ceramic Dog, and 2014 saw the monumental release: “Marc Ribot Trio Live at the Village Vanguard” (Pi Recordings), documenting Marc’s first headline and the return of Henry Grimes at the historical venue in 2012 already included on Best of 2014 lists including Downbeat Magazine. ANTHONY COLEMAN – KEYS Anthony Coleman is a composer, improvising keyboardist and teacher, born in New York City. Coleman is a member of the faculty COMING UP AT CAP UCLA of Boston’s New England Conservatory, in the Contemporary Improvisation Department, where he also teaches Jazz and Composition students. His ensembles have included the trio Sephardic Tinge (three CD’s: Sephardic Tinge (1995), Morenica (1998), and Our Beautiful Garden is Open (2002) - all on Tzadik) and Selfhaters Orchestra (two CD’s: Selfhaters (1996) and The Abysmal Richness of the Infinite Proximity of the Same (1998), both on Tzadik). Other CD’s include the cycle by Night (1987 - 1992), a series of works inspired by Coleman’s experiences in (the ex-) Yugoslavia (Disco by Night, Avant 1993), Shmutsige Magnaten, a live solo performance from the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival, Summer, 2005 which features interpretations of the songs of Mordechai Gebirtig, and Freakish: Anthony Coleman Plays Jelly Roll Morton (both on Tzadik). Pushy Blueness (Tzadik) and Lapidation (New World) are both recordings of his chamber music. Coleman has toured and recorded with John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Marc Ribot, Shelley Hirsch, Roy Nathanson and many others. An evening with BRAD JONES – BASS Dr. John & the Nite Trippers Bassist/composer Brad Jones has recorded and toured extensively Sat, Dec 6 at 8 pm with a diverse array of artists that include Ornette Coleman, Elvis Costello, Elvin Jones, Sheryl Crow, Muhal Richard Abrams, Royce Hall Cassandra Wilson, Deborah Harry, Dave Douglas, Don Byron, Marc Ribot, and The Jazz Passengers to name just a few. Recordings released under his own leadership include Uncivilized Poise and The Embodiment with his band, Aka Alias, Pouring My Heart In with the Brad Jones Quartet, and his most recent project entitled Avant Lounge which is released on the Ropeadope label. As an educator, Brad has taught workshops and master classes in Canada, Mexico, and in various countries in Europe. He is also a member of the music faculty at Columbia University in NYC. EJ RODRIGUEZ – PERCUSSION EJ grew up in the NYC 70’s salsa scene but loved playing Funk, Soul and R&B. An evening with After his first major gig with Dr. Buzzard’s Savannah Band, EJ met and began playing withJohn Lurie’s and his group the Lounge Gregory Porter Lizards an early band in the creation of the Downtown NY avant- Sat, Jan 17 at 8 pm jazz sensibility. EJ and three other ex-Lizards went on to form The Jazz Passengers in 1987 and they continue undeterred. In between Royce Hall these groups EJ played and recorded with a diverse list of incredible artists, including John Cale, Dr. John, Towa Tei of DeeLite to Brooklyn Funk Essentials and jamband Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. In 1999, EJ travelled to Cuba with students and studied with the great Jose Luis Quintana AKA “Changuito” and the late master drummer Pancho Quinto. ROBERTO RODRIGUEZ – DRUMS Born in East Havana Cuba, and raised in Miami, percussionist and composer Roberto Rodriguez brings groundbreaking new music through his cross-cultural roots. Drawing upon his influences across the board of traditional Cuban music roots to contemporary genres of world music and Sephardic music, pop, jazz and improvisation, electronic, classical, he is one of the most versed performers and intriguing composers today. Roberto leads his own band, Sexteto Rodriguez and has performed and recorded with many great musicians such as Rufus Wainwright, Joe Jackson, John Zorn, Marc Gabriel Kahane: The Ambassador Ribot , Celia Cruz ,Israel “CACHAO” Lopez, Paquito D’Rivera, Julio Iglesias, Miami Sound Machine, Paul Simon, TBone Burnett , Lloyd Fri-Sat, Feb 27-28 at 8 pm Cole, Reuben Blades, Larry Coryell, Dr. L Subramaniam, Kavita Freud Playhouse Krishnamurti, Randy Brecker , Dave Liebman, Kim Karnes, Phoebe Snow, Dianne Shurer , Lester Bowie, Wadada Leo Smith.
