Superb! Horst Lantelme Certificate (1993). [When War was declared, on 4/8/1914, no suitable military stationery was available so this provisional expedient was resorted to. This is the only example we have recorded used to any external destination apart from Germany]

Bita Paka was the site of an important radio station, of major strategic importance. The "Battle of Bita Paka", on 11/9/1914 was Australia's first engagement of World War I. 25 naval reservists overcame stiff resistance, losing seven killed & five wounded. The Germans lost an NCO and about 30 armed Melanesians. This item was written the day before the Australian offensive. The postcard was impounded and held at Herbertshohe for more than a year before being released. The sender identified himself as a Feldwebel (= sergeant), so he was probably the NCO who died in the engagement. 2,500T

[Powell states that the PO closed in -/12/1914 but that the date may have been in January - when three Australian warships arrived - or in February 1915. This item proves that the PO was still functioning in February. Lot 802 802 S B A3 Buka: 'BUKA/(DEUTSCH-/[NE]UGUINEA)/6.1/[?]' large-part strike on 10pf, a little aged, Bothe guarantee h/s on the reverse. Rated F by Powell (but that includes philatelic usages during the early days of the Australian Occupation). One of the rarest postmarks of all the German Colonies: an example of 29.5/14 on piece sold for Dm25,300 in 2001! PO opened 26/7/1913; closed -/12/1914. [Buka is an island to the immediate north of Bougainville. Though geographically in the Solomons Group, it was occupied by Germany in 1886 & absorbed into Deutsch Neu Guinea]

NB: In December 1914, the cds fell into Australian hands. A number of strikes dated '6.11/14' are known on GRI stamps, and one example of the same date on unoverprinted stamps: that item sold for $3910 at our auction of 24/1/2004. Consequently, it is believed the dateslugs had become corroded or "frozen". While the year is not evident on this example, it must be 1914. 4,000T Nov 19, 2011 Prestige Philately - Auction No 169 Page: 25 NEW GUINEA - German (Deutsch) New Guinea - Postmarks (continued) Lot Type Grading Description Est $AUD
