Daily Lives of High School Boys Roaming the Halls of the All-Boys Daily Lives of High School Boys Roaming the halls of the all-boys Sanada North High School are three close comrades: the eccentric ringleader with a hyperactive imagination Hidenori, the passionate Yoshitake, and the rational and prudent Tadakuni. Their lives are filled with giant robots, true love, and intense drama... in their colorful imaginations, at least. In reality, they are just an everyday trio of ordinary guys trying to pass the time, but who said everyday life couldn't be interesting? Witch Craft Works Takamiya Honoka is an ordinary high school student when one day is life is put in danger when the "Princess" of the school dressed as a which reveals herself to be what is known as a workshop which and has for reasons yet known placed Takamiya Honoka under her protection. Puella Magi Madoka Magica After experiencing a bizarre dream, Madoka Kaname, a kind 14-year-old girl, encounters a magical creature named Kyubey. Madoka and her friend, Sayaka Miki, are offered the opportunity of gaining magical powers if they agree to make a contract with the strange little being. He will also grant them one wish, but in exchange, they shall risk their lives by accepting the responsibility of fighting witches. Invisible to human eyes, witches are catalysts of despair in the areas they inhabit. An ally of Kyubey, a magical girl named Mami Tomoe, befriends and encourages the two girls to accept the contract. For an unknown reason, another magical girl named Homura Akemi is determined to prevent Madoka from accepting the deal. Charlotte Puberty came with the perk of super powers, but only during adolescence and your powers suck. So best thing to do is have fun while it last by hunting down other ability users to keep society safe. Yowamushi Pedal Sakamichi Onoda wants to join his school's anime club, but the club has been disbanded and he takes it upon himself to revive it by finding students who are willing to join. Without much luck, Onoda decides to make a round trip to Akihabara on his old, bulky city bicycle. This is when he meets fellow first year student, Shunsuke Imaizumi, a determined cyclist who is using the school's steep incline for practice. Imaizumi challenges him to a race, with the proposition of joining the anime club should Onoda win. And thus begins the young boy's first foray into the world of high school bicycle racing! Hunter x Hunter This anime is based on the popular and on-going WSJ manga written by Yoshihiro Togashi. Characteristic of typical shonen, this anime contains a father-less main character, abilities, training arcs, manipulation of aura, and a stubborn, talented, and dumb protagonist, but unlike most shonen, is based in the real-world and defies chlicé outcomes. Covered in multiple arcs, the anime covers the stories of the main character, Gon, as well as his soon to be close friends, Kurapika, Killua, and Leorio, and portrays multiple tones with a variety of characters and settings all while providing a seamless and cohesive story. Count on the anime to provide strategic fights, touching scenes, and a creative story. Wolf’s Rain From the creator of Cowboy Bebop, 'Wolf's Rain' is the story of Kiba, an injured lone white wolf, who goes to Freeze City following the scent of the Lunar Flower, which is the key to opening Paradise. There he encounters three other wolves who were drawn to Freeze City by the scent of the Lunar Flower and are now living in the city. The wolves encounter Quent Yaiden, a former Sheriff of Kyrios who is obsessed with hunting down wolves, and his dog Blue. Cheza, the Flower Maiden who is destined to lead the wolves to Paradise, is being studied at a laboratory under the care of Cher Degré. She is awakened by the smell of wolf's blood. As Kiba and Hige approach the lab to find her, she is stolen away by Lord Darcia the Third, whose people created Cheza. With the Flower Maiden gone, the wolves have no reason to stay in the city. They decide to stay together and follow Kiba in his search for the Flower Maiden and Paradise. Nichijou Nichijou primarily focuses on the daily antics of a trio of childhood friends—high school girls Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi and Mai Minakami—whose stories soon intertwine with the young genius Hakase Shinonome, her robot caretaker Nano, and their talking cat Sakamoto. With every passing day, the lives of these six, as well as of the many people around them, experience both the calms of normal life and the insanity of the absurd. Walking to school, being bitten by a talking crow, spending time with friends, and watching the principal suplex a deer: they are all in a day's work in the extraordinary everyday lives of those in Nichijou. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash Fear, survival, instinct. Thrown into a foreign land with nothing but hazy memories and the knowledge of their name, they can feel only these three emotions resonating deep within their souls. A group of strangers is given no other choice than to accept the only paying job in this game-like world—the role of a soldier in the Reserve Army—and eliminate anything that threatens the peace in their new world, Grimgar. Sakura Wars The World is under attack, the armies of the demonic alien invaders are advancing, and since the year is 1919, none of the superweapons that mankind will later develop even exist! Fortunately, the engineers at Kanzaki Industries have developed something unexpected - steam-powered battle robots! But these new machines will require a very special breed of human pilot, people with a unique type of fighting spirit. And that's where the Imperial Flower Combat Troop comes in! A group of courageous young women fighting to protect Japan and the world from the invasion, but as new recruit Sakura finds out, they're not as unified as she originally thought! Can Sakura and her teammates gel as a team in time to save the day? .

Introduction In a world of seemingly endless negativity, there is one girl still holding out for a happy ending. In fact, she’s actively trying to create that happy ending with everything she’s got! Homura Akemi has gone through countless cycles of time to save her best friend Madoka Kaname, but she never succeeds. This failure will no doubt drive her mad in the end… but that is not the story of this Homura. For some strange reason, Homura’s ability to turn back time has started to insert her into stranger and stranger parallel worlds called Time Flows. These Time Flows can have relatively mundane differences from the original, like a world where everyone is oddly more spaced out, or could be ludicrously different, like a world that has a bar for the different Homuras of the multiverse! You enter into this odd multiverse just as the 38th most powerful Homura, Tamura, enters into the “Spaced-Out” Time Flow. It’s a place for the Homuras of the multiverse to relax from their constant failures to save Madoka… and from the increasingly odd Time Flows. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Between Asian Girls Minor Feminisms and Sideways Critique A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Sharon N. Tran 2017 © Copyright by Sharon N. Tran 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Between Asian Girls Minor Feminisms and Sideways Critique by Sharon N. Tran Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Rachel C. Lee, Chair This dissertation expands existing accounts of the history of Asian racialization in the United States by examining the various discursive, symbolic, and affective economies through which the “Asian girl” has been trafficked. I mobilize the “Asian girl” as a critical framework for attending to an especially vulnerable, young female population and girlification as a particular mode of racialization. I examine the Asian girl queered by militarization, the kawaii (cute) Asian girl, the cybernetic/transgenic Asian girl, and the feral Asian girl as critical sites for seriously grappling with material conditions of political constraint and dependency. The project identifies girlish vulnerability as a structure of disavowal/contempt in a historically masculinist minoritarian politics that emphasizes autonomy, sovereignty, and militant resistance and takes forms of vulnerability as a basis theorizing an alternative affective politics. My research draws on the works of Asian/American novelists, poets, and visual artists for how they (re)imagine Asian girls in lateral associations of compoundedness, eroticism, and nascent political solidarity. ii As the title, “Between Asian Girls,” suggests, this dissertation seeks to recuperate theorizations of female homosociality, famously dismissed by Eve Sedgwick, as overly “intelligible”—thereby too facile for investigation—and at the same time, as politically illegible.

Shio and Kosho, with the help of YOU the congoers, defeated the alien forces and grounded Shoyu on planet Vidya—a world where the physics, landmarks, and inhabitants have developed into something remarkably similar to the video games we are familiar with here on Earth. However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Shio and Kosho recruited Ryu from Street Fighter, and Vault Boy from Fallout. These heroes met on the battlefield known asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate! It was truly an epic match—and in the end, it was Shio and Kosho who proved victorious! His coup having been thwarted, Shoyu agreed to team back up with the congirls to continue their journey through space toward World Conquest! Everything should be fine now as long as they don’t all, say, crash their starship into a mysterious beach planet… right? • Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica
humanities Article Becoming the Labyrinth: Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Sara Cleto * and Erin Kathleen Bahl Department of English, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-404-808-8407 Academic Editor: Claudia Schwabe Received: 2 March 2016; Accepted: 30 March 2016; Published: 6 April 2016 Abstract: In the magical girl anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, middle-school girls receive the power and responsibility to fight witches in exchange for making a wish. The series has connections to many different genres and narrative traditions within the realm of folkloristics. However, the folkloric genre most relevant to the ethos and aesthetics of Madoka is that of the fairy tale. Drawing on Bill Ellis’s concept of “fairy-telling” and scholarship on new media composition, in this paper we seek to investigate labyrinths as acts of embodied composing—not lairs of evil or destruction but rather creative material memory work that negotiates grief and despair. Many of the series’ action sequences unfold in “labyrinths,” the magical spaces controlled by witches. By composing a labyrinth, witches can simultaneously reshape their environment and create a powerful statement about identity through personalized performance in narrative spaces that they control. In particular, we argue that both the frameworks of “fairy tale” and “new media” give us useful analytical resources for beginning to make sense of the intricately complex phenomenon of Madoka’s labyrinths. Keywords: fairy tale; new media; anime; magical girl; labyrinth; Madoka 1. Introduction In the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica [1] (hereafter Madoka), a granted wish marks not a happily-ever-after ending but rather a complicated beginning.
