Introduction In a world of seemingly endless negativity, there is one girl still holding out for a happy ending. In fact, she’s actively trying to create that happy ending with everything she’s got! Homura Akemi has gone through countless cycles of time to save her best friend Madoka Kaname, but she never succeeds. This failure will no doubt drive her mad in the end… but that is not the story of this Homura. For some strange reason, Homura’s ability to turn back time has started to insert her into stranger and stranger parallel worlds called Time Flows. These Time Flows can have relatively mundane differences from the original, like a world where everyone is oddly more spaced out, or could be ludicrously different, like a world that has a bar for the different Homuras of the multiverse! You enter into this odd multiverse just as the 38th most powerful Homura, Tamura, enters into the “Spaced-Out” Time Flow. Location (Roll 1d8 or spend 50 cp to choose) Akemi-Ya (1) The bar and restaurant made for and by Homuras. It’s a place for the Homuras of the multiverse to relax from their constant failures to save Madoka… and from the increasingly odd Time Flows. It has an incredibly jovial atmosphere and the people there do not take kindly to people intentionally ruining that atmosphere. You’ll no doubt run into a whole host of characters here, but you will assuredly meet Bar Homura and Professor Homura! “Spaced-Out” Time Flow (2) The first odd time flow that Tamura will find herself placed in. -
UNIVERSITY of CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Between Asian Girls Minor
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Between Asian Girls Minor Feminisms and Sideways Critique A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Sharon N. Tran 2017 © Copyright by Sharon N. Tran 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Between Asian Girls Minor Feminisms and Sideways Critique by Sharon N. Tran Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Rachel C. Lee, Chair This dissertation expands existing accounts of the history of Asian racialization in the United States by examining the various discursive, symbolic, and affective economies through which the “Asian girl” has been trafficked. I mobilize the “Asian girl” as a critical framework for attending to an especially vulnerable, young female population and girlification as a particular mode of racialization. I examine the Asian girl queered by militarization, the kawaii (cute) Asian girl, the cybernetic/transgenic Asian girl, and the feral Asian girl as critical sites for seriously grappling with material conditions of political constraint and dependency. The project identifies girlish vulnerability as a structure of disavowal/contempt in a historically masculinist minoritarian politics that emphasizes autonomy, sovereignty, and militant resistance and takes forms of vulnerability as a basis theorizing an alternative affective politics. My research draws on the works of Asian/American novelists, poets, and visual artists for how they (re)imagine Asian girls in lateral associations of compoundedness, eroticism, and nascent political solidarity. ii As the title, “Between Asian Girls,” suggests, this dissertation seeks to recuperate theorizations of female homosociality, famously dismissed by Eve Sedgwick, as overly “intelligible”—thereby too facile for investigation—and at the same time, as politically illegible. -

1 PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON KAMI-CON CHARACTERS PREVIOUSLY AT KAMI-CON... Shio and Kosho, with the help of YOU the congoers, defeated the alien forces and grounded Shoyu on planet Vidya—a world where the physics, landmarks, and inhabitants have developed into something remarkably similar to the video games we are familiar with here on Earth. However, it seems that Shoyu would not be defeated so easily. After crash landing on Vidya, he began to court the local inhabitants of the planet to join him and fight for his cause! With the planet he was supposed to be trapped on becoming a new source of power, it was up to you Kami-Congoers once again to rise to the occasion and help Shio and Kosho stop Shoyu! (This seems to happen a lot. Who would have known that having the Spirit of the Yandere Black Turtle for a magical animal mascot would have brought so much drama to Kami-Con? Oh, well!) With the help of the congoers, Shoyu only managed to recruit three powerful allies— Ken from Street Fighter, Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros., and Link from The Legend of Zelda. Shio and Kosho recruited Ryu from Street Fighter, and Vault Boy from Fallout. These heroes met on the battlefield known asSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate! It was truly an epic match—and in the end, it was Shio and Kosho who proved victorious! His coup having been thwarted, Shoyu agreed to team back up with the congirls to continue their journey through space toward World Conquest! Everything should be fine now as long as they don’t all, say, crash their starship into a mysterious beach planet… right? Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica
humanities Article Becoming the Labyrinth: Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Sara Cleto * and Erin Kathleen Bahl Department of English, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-404-808-8407 Academic Editor: Claudia Schwabe Received: 2 March 2016; Accepted: 30 March 2016; Published: 6 April 2016 Abstract: In the magical girl anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, middle-school girls receive the power and responsibility to fight witches in exchange for making a wish. The series has connections to many different genres and narrative traditions within the realm of folkloristics. However, the folkloric genre most relevant to the ethos and aesthetics of Madoka is that of the fairy tale. Drawing on Bill Ellis’s concept of “fairy-telling” and scholarship on new media composition, in this paper we seek to investigate labyrinths as acts of embodied composing—not lairs of evil or destruction but rather creative material memory work that negotiates grief and despair. Many of the series’ action sequences unfold in “labyrinths,” the magical spaces controlled by witches. By composing a labyrinth, witches can simultaneously reshape their environment and create a powerful statement about identity through personalized performance in narrative spaces that they control. In particular, we argue that both the frameworks of “fairy tale” and “new media” give us useful analytical resources for beginning to make sense of the intricately complex phenomenon of Madoka’s labyrinths. Keywords: fairy tale; new media; anime; magical girl; labyrinth; Madoka 1. Introduction In the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica [1] (hereafter Madoka), a granted wish marks not a happily-ever-after ending but rather a complicated beginning. -
