  • Historical Derby Fleet List
DERBY BOROUGH TRANSPORT HISTORICAL FLEET LIST This list is not complete - Please email any additions or corrections to this list - thanks! Some notes on Derby's fleet numbering may be helpful. The prewar motorbus series reached 73, and the first wartime utility bus (a solitary Bristol K) took the fleet number 74. The series then reverted to 1, with 1-21 being Daimler and Guy utilities. By 1949, however, the new series was 'catching up' with the earlier prewar numbers, hence the jump from 41 to 75 to avoid duplication. This series then continued right up to 315, delivered in 1981; lowheight double deckers and coaches were numbered in separate series, as were the four Daimlers acquired secondhand from Halifax. A new series for new-generation double deckers was begun in 1978 by Foden NC number 101. Trolleybuses followed on from the tram series, with the first one (79) arriving in 1932; the series then continued unbroken to 243 of 1960. The motorbus series nearly caught up with the trolleybus numbers in 1966, but the complete withdrawal of trolleybus services in 1967 eliminated this problem. Trolleybuses F/No Reg. • Newsletter No
BTK 3669 to become a theatre Those of you who study every word of Moors Line will have noticed on page 63 of Issue 191 that it is planned to use a 1930’s carriage during Wartime Weekend to perform a play called ‘Bomb Happy’. The carriage in question is of course BTK3669, whose brake van area has been deemed suitable to be used as a small theatre. The owners of BTK3669 are delighted that it is going to be used for this purpose, as it is another opportunity to raise the profile of the Association. A Puzzle Picture Dave Cullingworth recently spotted a print of the photo below of a Howlden ECJS or GN clerestory coach, photographed in its later years as departmental No. 961503, for sale on E-bay. It raises some questions—can anyone help with the answers? What is obviously unusual about this coach is that it has had an underframe change -it is on a Gresley angle-trussed underframe with the characteristic clipped-head buffers. It couldn’t have received this earlier than the early 1930s when these were introduced. Why would such an elderly vehicle have a replacement underframe relatively late in its life? Any accident damage sufficient to write off an underframe Newsletter No. 106 August 2016 probably wouldn’t have done the body it carried much good either! If you know of any information surrounding this mystery we would love to be enlightened! 15 LNERCA TRUSTEES. • Hornet Fv1620
HORNET FV1620 Clive Elliott explains how the development of the Hornet missile launcher. The Hornet missile launcher was developed under the FVRDE design specification FV1620. Depending on the stage of development the vehicle was identified as: Truck, 1 Ton, Armoured Launcher, 4x4, Humber. Launcher, Guided Missile, Truck Mounted. Truck, 1 Ton, Airportable Launcher, 4x4. Launcher, Guided Missile, Truck Mounted (Malkara) Armoured, 1 Ton, 4x4, Humber Hornet. The Humber 1-Ton trucks were introduced in the early 1950s and were designated by the Fighting Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (FVRDE) as the FV1600 series. They demonstrate how a wide range of variants can be based on a cargo truck. Other 1-Ton trucks of the time, like the Austin K9 (FV16000 series) and Morris MRA/1 (FV16100 series) were based on a commercial chassis, but the Humber was developed exclusively for military use and was the only ‘standardised’ 1-Ton truck. Standardised, means that it has some components that are shared with other standardised vehicles such as Champ, Ferret, Saracen etc. Of all the Humber variants the armoured version known as the Pig saw the longest service and is the most widely known variant. But the most ingenious variant must be the Hornet (FV1620) which became the launch vehicle for the Malkara Anti-Tank Guided Weapon (ATGW). The adoption of Malkara by the British Army spawned a range of other Humber variants to supply, test and repair the Malkara system. It has been said that the Hornet was a rather improvised vehicle and that a better launch vehicle could have been designed.

  • The Steam Locomotive Table, V1
The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary.

Photo: Mervyn Allcock New Technology on Test Opening On 31st March, shortly after the Roundhouse - like the rest of the Shot... country - had gone into lockdown, Railview (a railway research company which uses Barrow Hill for testing) undertook filming of its latest prototype technology, mounted on a Mercedes Unimog road rail vehicle. This filming was obviously subject to social distancing requirements and risk assessments were undertaken prior to it taking place. The video that was created from this activity then formed the basis of an online webinar and Q&A session on 23rd April with representatives of the railway industry including Network Rail, a potential user of this technology. This shot was captured just before the class 08 was loaded for onward transit to a HNRC contract; it is pictured here with class 45 45060 and class 47 47769.
