Es ist Eitners Verdienst die Aufgaben einer umfassenden musikhistorischen Quellenkunde zum ersten Male richtig erkannt und ihre Lösung versucht zu haben. Das Quellenlexikon leistet der musikwissenschaftlichen Arbeit trotz seiner bekannten und vielerörterten Mängel unschätzbare Dienste. Um so näher lag der Wunsch, die Brauchbarkeit des unentbehrlichen Werkes durch Verbesserung und Ergänzung zu erhöhen. Den ersten Anstoß in dieser Richtung gaben die Ver- handlungen und Beschlüsse des zweiten Kongresses der Inter- nationalen Musikgesellschaft in Basel 1906, die zur Einsetzung der Bibliographischen Kommission geführt haben. In ihrem Kreise wurde eine Zentralisation der musikbibliographischen Arbeit versucht und die Möglichkeit einer Verzeichnung der gesamten älteren Musikliteratur erwogen. Das Ergebnis dieser Prüfung war die Einsicht, daß die Vorbedingungen für das Ver- wirklichen solcher allumfassender Pläne fehlen und auch in absehbarer Zeit nicht geschaffen werden können. So legten die Beschlüsse des dritten Kongresses in Wien 1909 als nächste Aufgaben fest: die Sammlung von Verbesserungen und Ergänzungen zu Eitners Quellenlexikon durch die Berliner Zentralstelle der Bibliographischen Kommission und die Vorbereitung einer Pu- blikation des Materials. Diese Arbeiten, die einen beträchtlichen Aufwand an Zeit, Kraft und Geldmitteln verlangen und durch die Internationale Musikgesellschaft keine materielle Förderung erfahren können, wurden durch das Eintreten einzelner Berliner Fachgenossen in die Wege geleitet. Ein Probedruck, der den Versuch einer Lösung der Aufgabe darstellt, wurde dem Londoner Kongresse im Juni 191 1 vorgelegt und die Bibliographische Kommission beschloß, unter Billigung des Planes einer privaten periodischen Publikation in dieser Form durch die Herausgeber, diesen das eingehende Material der Kommmission für das Unternehmen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Publikation beschränkt sich aber keineswegs auf die den Herausgebern offiziell überwiesenen oder ihnen sonst ge- legentlich zugehenden Beiträge, sondern bietet in erster Linie die Ergebnisse eigener systematischer Sammelarbeit, die sich auf die gesamte neuere musikwissenschaftliche Literatur erstreckt. Neue Autoren, neue Werke, neue Fundorte, neue biogra- der Nachweise. Ferner phische Daten bilden den Hauptinhalt werden Korrekturen des Quellenlexikons (Berichtigung falscher tatsächlicher Angaben und Verbesserung redaktioneller und sie bereits einzelnen anderer Fehler) mitgeteilt, soweit nicht den Bänden des Eitnerschen Werkes angefügt sind. (Vgl. das— oft übersehene »Register über die Nachträge« Bd. 10, S. 469 479.) Im allgemeinen werden quellenmäßig belegte Nachweise geboten. Von dem Materiale, das nicht von den Herausgebern Provenienz selbst beigebracht ist, wird die angegeben. Bei der Redaktion bemühen sich die Herausgeber um genaue Nachprüfung und um eine möglichst knappe und klare Fassung. Für die Behandlung des bibliographischen Details werden im allgemeinen die Vorschriften der »Instruktionen für die alphabetischen Kataloge der preußischen Bibliotheken, 2. Aus- in denen eine gabe 1908« zugrunde gelegt, abgesehen von Fällen, unveränderte Wiedergabe des vorgefundenen Materials geboten erscheint. Es besteht der Grundsatz, unbestimmte bibliographische Sammelbezeichnungen möglichst zu vermeiden und Einzelnach- weise zu geben. Bei der notwendigen Auswahl aus dem naturgemäß un- Viel- gleichwertigen Materiale ist die Rücksicht auf möglichste Interesse der seitigkeit des Inhalts und auf das allgemeinere Forschung maßgebend. So werden zum Beispiel neue Fundorte oder nur dann angegeben, wenn es sich um besonders seltene schwer zugängliche Werke handelt. Das nicht veröffentlichte Material bleibt der Berliner bibliographischen Zentralstelle zur Verfügung. * Innerhalb der einzelnen Artikel zeigt ein an, was in dem betreffenden Falle über Eitners Quellenlexikon hinaus neu nachgewiesen wird. Für eine eventuelle zettelkatalogmäßige Verwendung (durch Ausschneiden und Aufkleben) werden die einzelnen Nachweise in sich geschlossen und von einander unabhängig gehalten und in der Zeilenlänge dem internationalen Katalogkartenformate an- gepaßt. Sie werden innerhalb einzelner Hefte in alphabetischer Ordnung aufgereiht und durch den Jahrgang hindurch mit laufender Nummer versehen, die mit Hilfe eines Jahresregisters leichtes Auffinden ermöglicht. Die Publikation erscheint im Formate des Eitnerschen Quellen- lexikons in Vierteljahrsheften. Neben der doppelseitig bedruckten Ausgabe wird für Abonnenten, die eine katalogmäßige Verwendung beabsichtigen, eine Ausgabe in einseitigem Drucke hergestellt. Die Herausgeber hoffen mit diesem Unternehmen, welches dringenden Forderungen der Musikwissenschaft in der zur Zeit möglichen und fachtechnisch als brauchbar anerkannten Form entspricht, den Interessen der Musikgelehrten wie der Bibliotheken und der Sammler in gleichem Maße zu dienen.     Constantin Floros Modern music notation developed out of the so-called square notation and this out of the Latin neumes. The question of where these neumes came from has long been the subject of scholarly debate. As the author demonstrated in his three-volume Universale Neumenkunde published in German in 1970, there is a very close relationship between the Paleo-Byzantine notation and the Latin neumes. Although the study aroused a great deal of dispute, more recent studies have revealed that the relevance of the Neumenkunde re- mains essentially unchallenged after 40 years. Perhaps this is due to the lack of a strong textual basis for the treatise; so far, the only published edition of Musica is found in Martin Gerbert’s Scriptores ecclesiastici de musica, which dates from 1784. This dissertation stands as the first complete critical edition of Musicae artis disciplina. In order to contextualize the treatise, two introductory chapters represent a thorough investigation of Musica’s theories and its rightful place in music theory of the Middle Ages. The first chapter considers notions of pitch, intervals, melodic shape, and musical grammar, as outlined in Musicae artis disciplina. I then situate the treatise within the Italian musico-theoretical school of the early eleventh century by examining the similarities in content, orientation, musical citation, and terminology, and by considering the manuscript tradition of the anonymous Dialogus, the writings of Guido of Arezzo, and Musicae artis disciplina. Contrary to current theories regarding Musica’s origin, I argue that the treatise was likely written in the mid-eleventh century, after the Dialogus and treatises of Guido of Arezzo.

Research background The two thematic components given in the title of this thesis, the tonary and the antiphonal psalmody of the Office, were formerly set forth in two distinct threads by the research of medieval liturgical plainchant. Tonaries played a key role in the early stage of the history of Frankish-Roman Gregorian chant, as they published the liturgical set of chants at the same time as the first chant books, and in the very musical taxonomy that reflected the application of the system of eight modes to the chant material. In the interpretation of the inception and purpose of the book as a genre, as justified by the material contained in it, two notions confronted each other: the one based on praxis and the one based on theory. Michel Huglo was prompted by his study of Carolingian tonary to distinguish its practical archetype, a tonary only comprising chants sounded by means of antiphonal psalmody. In his fundamental monograph (1971), he identified and described several sources of tonaries chiefly by way of external properties (title, textual commentary, structure, and authorship). The questions of the function and bequeathing of tonaries were later discussed by Paul Merkley (1988, 1992) as the medieval history of the theoretical classification of tunes, and he drew the attention to the content of tonaries: presenting the minute stratification of the inventory of chants.
