Endemic Macrolepidoptera Subspecies in the Natural History Museum Collections from Sibiu (Romania)

The paper presents data regarding endemic Macrolepidoptera subspecies preserved in the Entomological Collections of Natural History Museum from Sibiu. 22 endemic subspecies are recorded and represented by 382 specimens in the Entomological Collection. Most of the specimens have been collected from mountain habitats, especially from Southern and Western Carpathians. The results of this paper contribute to the improvement of the existing data concerning the distribution and outline the areas of Macrolepidoptera’s endemism in Romania. Résumé. Le document présente des données concernant les sous-espèces endémiques des Macrolépidoptères conservées dans les collections entomologiques du Musée d’Histoire Naturelle de Sibiu. 22 sous-espèces endémiques sont enregistrées et représentées par 382 spécimens dans la collection entomologique. La plupart des spécimens ont été recueillis dans les habitats de montagne, en particulier du Sud et l’Ouest des Carpates. Les résultats de cette étude contribuent à compléter les données existantes concernant la distribution et de définir les zones d’endémisme des Macrolépidoptères en Roumanie. Movements of Alma in 2008 03 January 2008 No signals received on 30th or 1st, but at 2.15pm this afternoon received a low quality signal from north of Grantown-on-Spey, with Alma possibly moving onto Dava Moor. It was snowing quite heavily in the hills with strong easterly winds. 05 January 2008 A snow blizzard was raging on 4th Jan, the Lecht road was closed and so was the Cabrach by late afternoon. (I was trying to drive that route to Banchory and had to turn back and travel via Huntly). The mountains received a big snowfall and for once the mountains hares in winter coat would have been camouflaged. This morning the weather cleared, and the snow started to disappear on the lower ground. Over midday two signals were received as Alma flew south from the Ladder Hills across Strathdon, presumably to find food on lower hills. The distance between the Carn Mor and Birkford/Lynemore is 4.3 km. At 6.30pm on the 7th she was back roosting in the southern slopes of the Ladder Hills, near the Peat Hill. On lower ground Glen Fiddich hills from Cabrach 11 January 2008 Great information received today. The mountains in the Cairngorms National Park are at their very best; plenty of snow throughout the hills, cold, clear skies and light winds. All the ski centres reporting excellent conditions. Alma was busy to the south of the Lecht ski centre. Yesterday's sunny skies had charged up the solar battery on the radio, so really accurate signals at 0622 and 0659GMT showed exactly where she roosted in the southern parts of the Ladder Hills. -

Whether it is a Welsh first (Geranium Bronze in Creigiau, pg 8), a phenomenon rarely seen in our temperate climate (Bioluminescent plankton in Wales, pg 9) or just taking the time to study something often overlooked (Slime Moulds, pg 18), the joys of discovery through wildlife recording is evident throughout this issue. It is also great to learn of the efforts being made to preserve and enhance biodi- versity by organisations such as Porthkerry Wildlife Group (Porthkerry Country Park Wildflower Meadow Creation, pg 4) and Buglife (Wales Threatened Bee Re- port, pg 22). The denia conopsea (L.) R.Br. s.l. and Gymnadenia two orchids emitted different odour bouquets during odoratissima (L.) Rich. in four populations during the the day and night, but G. odoratissima showed greater day and night. We collected pollinators of both species temporal differences in odour composition, with phe- using hand nets and sampled floral odour by headspace nylacetaldehyde showing a significant increase during sorption. We analysed the samples by gas chromatog- the night. The species differed considerably in floral raphy with mass spectrometry to identify compounds odour emission and this differentiation was stronger in and with electroantennographic detection to identify the active than non-active compounds. -

Notes on the Scottish Macro-moth List, 2015 This list aims to include every species of macro-moth reliably recorded in Scotland, with an assessment of its Scottish status, as guidance for observers contributing to the National Moth Recording Scheme (NMRS). It updates and amends the previous lists of 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014. The requirement for inclusion on this checklist is a minimum of one record that is beyond reasonable doubt. Plausible but unproven species are relegated to an appendix, awaiting confirmation or further records. Unlikely species and known errors are omitted altogether, even if published records exist. Note that inclusion in the Scottish Invertebrate Records Index (SIRI) does not imply credibility. At one time or another, virtually every macro-moth on the British list has been reported from Scotland. Many of these claims are almost certainly misidentifications or other errors, including name confusion. However, because the County Moth Recorder (CMR) has the final say, dubious Scottish records for some unlikely species appear in the NMRS dataset. A modern complication involves the unwitting transportation of moths inside the traps of visiting lepidopterists. Then on the first night of their stay they record a species never seen before or afterwards by the local observers. Various such instances are known or suspected, including three for my own vice-county of Banffshire. Surprising species found in visitors’ traps the first time they are used here should always be regarded with caution. Clerical slips – the wrong scientific name scribbled in a notebook – have long caused confusion. An even greater modern problem involves errors when computerising the data. -
