Obra del polígrafo italiano Girolamo Ruscelli, escrita bajo el pseudónimo de Alejo Piamontés, viajero ficticio que habría recorrido el mundo recogiendo la sabi- duría de toda clase de personas1 , consiste en una recopilación de recetas con aplicación en los más distintos ámbitos de la vida coti- diana –y no tan cotidiana– como, por ejemplo, la fabricación de cosméticos, la elaboración de medicinas e, incluso, la orfebrería2. En su condición de colección de remedios pseudo-médicos y fórmulas pseudo-científicas dicho título gozó de gran aceptación en todos los niveles de la sociedad, convirtiéndose en uno de los best- seller de su época y, precisamente a raíz de esta misma popularidad, en una de las obras con mayor número de ediciones perdidas y me- nor número de ejemplares conservados que conocemos. Por eso, nadie se sorprendió cuando en verano de 2011 apareció en poder de un particular un ejemplar de una edición desconocida del Libro de los Secretos de Alejo Piamontés en castellano. Impresa en Salamanca en 1 573 , a cargo de Juan Perier, no consta en ninguno de los repertorios bibliográficos habituales3 , ni tan siquiera en los más específicos de literatura médica y científica4, ni en los salmantinos5 . Tampoco figura en el –a todas luces insuficiente– trabaj o de Mar Rey Bueno (2005) sobre las primeras ediciones castellanas de Alej o Piamontés, ni tenemos noticia de que algún ej emplar conste en el catálogo de algún li- brero o casa de subastas6, por lo que hemos creído pertinente Amaranta Saguar García facilitar a la comunidad investigadora una descripción detallada de este ej emplar. 1. DESCRIPCIÓN FISICA En su estado actual, el tomo muestra una encuadernación antigua de tres nervios (ca.140 x 62 x 45 mm) en piel lisa marrón claro, con señales de haber poseído cierres de cuerda, uno de los cuales se conser- va. Más allá de los cortes toscamente grabados con diseños geométricos, el ejemplar no presenta ninguna otra decoración exterior y, a pesar de la primera impresión visual, la encuadernación no es de época. Sirva como prueba la marca de posesión de la portada que, cercenada por la cuchilla del encuadernador, evidencia la posterioridad de la encuadernación res- pecto a la firma. La mutilación parcial de la rúbrica no nos impide reconocer el nombre de Diego de Colmenares, a quien identificamos con el insigne historiador segoviano (1586-1651) tras comparar esta firma con la de algunos ejemplares conocidos de su biblioteca7. No existen más marcas de posesión explícitas en el libro que, en cambio, presenta la si- guiente dedicatoria, aparentemente en mano del siglo XVIII, en el verso de la última de dos hojas manuscritas insertas entre los ff. 73 y 75 para reintegrar el texto del f. 74, desprendido de la tripa del libro sin posibili- dad de ser reencuadernado con el resto8: [Cruz centrada] | [Justificado:] Doña Monica Yvañez | guarde Dios muchos años | Como lo desea su | mas apasionado y - | amigo. D Iban! | Gonzalez [Rúbrica] Atendiendo a la formulación de lo anterior, no es difícil imaginar que la dedicataria, Mónica Ibáñez, recibiera de Iván González, dueño del ejemplar en aquel tiempo, este Libro de los Secretos como muestra de su devoción; convirtiéndose así en la última poseedora conocida del tomo antes de pasar a pertenecer a la familia de su propietario actual a princi- pios del siglo XX. El abuelo de éste, Adriano Panadero Marugán (1886-1954), farmacéutico militar y traductor médico, adquirió el libro en función de su interés por la literatura científica, probablemente por 164 pesetas, según precio en la esquina inferior derecha del interior de la tapa trasera en tinta moderna. Las marcas de lectura son escasas, representadas fundamentalmen- te por cruces9 y líneas cortas horizontales10, con la ocasional aparición de subrayados mínimos y otros signos11. También se aprecia en el margen superior del recto del f. 89 una anotación cortada durante el proceso de 60 Una edición desconocida del «Libro de los secretos» reencuadernación, y aún una nota indescifrable en el margen inferior del recto del f. 12, sin embargo, la tipología del libro hace suponer nunca se trató de un libro profusamente anotado. Es más, su naturaleza utilitaria como recetario y libro de consulta justifica la profusión de cruces y rayas como señales destinadas a marcar qué “secretos” son más interesantes, cuáles han sido consultados o merecen serlo, y/o qué pasos de las indica- ciones se han seguido hasta el momento. Por desgracia, lo genérico e indistinto de estas marcas no permite arrojar ninguna hipótesis sobre sus autores, si bien las distintas intensidades de la tinta permiten suponer que pertenecen a lectores diferentes y cronológicamente distanciados a lo largo de los más de cinco siglos de existencia del tomo. Otras huellas dejadas por los lectores en el ejemplar son, por ejem- plo, las correcciones manuscritas de las erratas de foliación de los cuadernillos L y a, una suma sin resolver en la esquina derecha superior del interior de la tapa trasera o el interesante añadido manuscrito a través del cual un lector proporciona una curiosidad ignorada por Alejo Pia- montés, también en el interior de la tapa trasera12: N. 296 se añade otra cu | riosidad para saber | la pantorrilla que tie- ne | una muger medirlas | la muñeca justamente | Y doble la medida es jus | ta la pantorrilla y es es | primentada asi en hom | bres como mugeres [signo] Ésta y otra anotación corta en la parte superior del interior de la ta- pa trasera

MARTTI KOSKENNIEMI It is widely agreed that international law has its origins in the writings of the Spanish theologians of the 16th century, especially the so-called «School of Sala- manca», who were reacting to the news of Columbus having found not only a new continent but a new population, living in conditions unknown to Europeans and having never heard the gospel. The name of Francisco de Vitoria (c. 1492- 1546) the Dominican scholar who taught as Prima Professor with the theology fa- culty at the University of Salamanca from 1526 to 1546, is well-known to interna- tional law historians. This was not always the case. For a long time, international lawyers used to draw their pedigree from the Dutch Protestant Hugo de Groot (or Grotius) (1583-1645) who wrote as advocate of the Dutch East-India company in favour of opening the seas to Dutch commerce against the Spanish-Portuguese monopoly. Still in the 18th and 19th centuries, the law of nations —ius gentium— was seen as a predominantly Protestant discipline that drew its inspiration from the natural law taught by such followers of Grotius as the Saxon Samuel Pufen- dorf (1632-1694) and the Swiss Huguenot Emer de Vattel (1714-1767), followed by a series of professors at 18th century German universities1. It was only towards the late-19th century when the Belgian legal historian Er- nest Nys pointed to the Catholic renewal of natural law during the Spanish siglo de oro that attention was directed to Vitoria and some of his successors, especially the Jesuit Francisco Suárez, (1548-1617), who had indeed developed a universally applicable legal vocabulary —something that late— 19th century jurists, including Nys himself, were trying to achieve2.

    Legal Imagination in Vitoria. The Power of Ideas Pablo Zapatero* Professor of Public International Law, Carlos III University, Madrid, Spain 1. A Man’s Ideas Legal progress is often propelled by concepts first envisioned in academia. In this light, the present article explores the ideas of a fascinating intellectual figure: Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546),1 a man broadly recognized as one of the “founding fathers” of international law. The writings and lectures of this 16th century Dominican friar formulated innovative legal doctrines in an age of uncertainty and profound social change; an age that gave birth to the modern States that, with their centralized power, signalled the demise of medieval pluralism, the dismemberment of Christendom, and the erosion of imperial and papal aspirations to universal power. Medieval Europe, before then, had defined itself as a cultural, political and religious unity: the Res Publica Christiana. The first half of the 16th century witnessed the final breakdown of that order, the emergence of the modern sovereign state and the subsequent development of the European state system. In this walk you will hear some TALES. What is the meaning of tale? Another word for tale is story or narrative and if you look it up in a dictionary it says: a narrative that relates the details of some real or imaginary event, incident, or case; story. Salamanca is a city full of tales. Stories that happened, but perhaps after years the tale is told in a different way or some facts have changed. Hopefully, after this walk you will all feel that you know a little bit more about some interesting places in this city. Now, about the activities that take place during this walk: First of all, I am handing out different WORDS all grouped in a colour.     chapter 1 The School of Salamanca A Case of Global Knowledge Production Thomas Duve 1 Introduction What is today known as the “School of Salamanca” emerged in a time of fundamental political, religious, economic, and cultural transformations. Many of these were linked to early modern (proto- )globalisation and its con- sequences: the Iberian empires were expanding and their territories soon spanned the globe. Europeans encountered territories as well as cultural and political systems they had not known before. At the same time, reformations divided the res publica christiana, leading to huge political turmoil, wars, and the formation of different confessional cultures. The media revolution enabled communication at speeds and scales hitherto unknown and facilitated access to old and an avalanche of new knowledge. Not least because of these changes, early modern republics and monarchies, empires, religious orders, and the Roman Curia refined their techniques of governance. It was in this context that new universities were founded and traditional ones grew, professionalisation increased, and the sciences flourished. The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, played a key role in this devel- opment, particularly because the Catholic Kings had converted it into their privileged site of knowledge production. In Salamanca, humanists, jurists, cosmographers, theologians, and canonists trained the imperial elite. Here, future bishops, members of the Audiencias, jurists, and missionaries studied the measurement of space and time, the economy, language, faith, law, and justice and injustice. The preeminent scholars of the time came to Salamanca to teach, publishing houses established their officinae in the city, and probably in few places in the empire did so much information about the explorations and discoveries in the Caribbean and the Americas – including the violence, exploitation, and abuses committed by the European invaders – circulate as it did in Salamanca.
