(The first line, in Italics, is ; second line in parentheses is the What are these two things? literal translation; third is what it means.) In Chinese, each noun is associated with a word often referred to as a “classifier” or a C: Zhèxiē shì liăngbĕn shū. “measure word.” These classifiers are somewhat similar to the English words like “piece” (These – are – two volumes of a - book..) as in “a piece of pie” or “loaf” as in “a loaf of bread”. These are two books. In Chinese, these classifiers are used a little differently than in English. In Chinese classifiers are used between numbers and a noun. Classifiers are also used between words W: Neme, zhège ne? meaning “this”, “that” and “which” and the following noun. There are times when the (This – two-items of – things -are – what?) classifier is used but the noun is absent because it is understood. An example of this is: Well then, what is this?
