Ripped From the Silver Screen not only refers to the prominent movies being featured this year, but also the reinvention of horror classics. The creators have taken classic monsters of horror, such as Frankenstein and Dracula, and made them scary again by going back to their roots. By revisiting the origins of these classics, Horror Nights has done away with the diluted, pop culture image that these monsters have gained over the years. The point of this particular exercise is “to provide a more inclusive environment at the college,” said Dutka. Last on the list is Safe Zone Training, which Dutka is also associated with. Safe Zone Training, initiated in 2006, is done either by faculty, counselors or staff members, and is aimed at raising awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) issues at BC. Safe Zone officials recognize these issues and through a series of role-playing, videos and other exercises, they come together with students, offering guidance and information about GLBT stereotypes, gender and identity issues. Dutka reinforced that Safe Zone Training is not exactly counseling. He said that the teachers and staff members are there to listen and help out students, and, if necessary, refer them to counselors at different campuses. Dutka confirmed that Safe Zone Training “raises awareness, creates a dialogue and is done in the spirit of inclusion. [It also] supports diversity.” The Safe Zone Training will take place on Oct. 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at BC’s Willis Holcombe Center, and Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at BC’s North Campus. To Dutka, the events are “just another way of recognizing the diversity that is here at this college and to open up dialogue and discussion.” The counseling office is also open for all students that need help and guidance with certain subjects. “I guess I just encourage a sense of open-mindedness,” said Dutka. The goal of the events is positivity, allowing everyone to have fun, be judgment-free, and create an environment open to all. Below the Radar There is one thing that makes Stranglehold stand out: the spirit of a John Woo film. You can’t do the same thing forever, because eventually you’re going to get bored. Since Jay-Z’s rebirth out of his so- called “retirement” the questions began. His retirement turned out to be a short, two-year On Sept. 8 2009 Jay-Z’s eleventh album was released. They’re going to have a tough time trying to deny take a long look in the mirror and think about retirement again. Sadly, BP3 is an what rightfully belongs to Jay-Z. uninspired and bland offering. Whether you’re a fan or not, the facts are easy to follow. One: “Blueprint 3” is the Jay-Z’s last album was 2007’s “American Gangster (AG),” so going into BP3, best rap album of 2009. BP3 starts off with “What It’s a compilation of 15 tracks and from back to front it’s an album that speaks the We Talkin’About” which definitely does the task. The track follows the tried and truth. Something has to be said about a rapper that can still maintain his “swagger,” true Jay-Z method; a song in which Jay-Z talks about himself. This was cool maybe through an ever-changing field. “Swagger,” in my opinion is correctly defined as 10 years ago, but now on his 11th solo release, it’s kind of tired. This is an easy remaining true to what you are and Jay-Z stays true in honor of his song, skip. “.” Next up is “Thank You”. This has to be the first time in recent succeed. memory that I can remember Jay-Z consistently being outshined by guest artists on his own album, because Alicia Keys completely steals the show here. If the lyrics weren’t so bland, this would be one of the best Jay-Z songs in recent memory, but it’s not. It’s a shame really. The rest of the album is just one big collective yawn. “Real As It Gets” is weak. “On To The Next One” doesn’t flow well with the album; it should have been a bonus track, or at the least featured on the next album. It’s not a bad song; it just doesn’t fit on BP3. “Off That” is terrible. No further explanation is needed, just press the skip button. “A Star is Born” is an average track, but you’ll never want to give it a listen because the hook is darn annoying. “Venus Vs. Mars” is a laugher… yawn, need I continue? This is one of the worst Jay-Z albums ever, and at this time I wonder if Jay-Z can truly recover. In a rap game populated by the Lil’ Wayne’s and the Soulja Boy’s, it won’t be long until Jay-Z is no longer relevant, similar to other rap legends from the 80’s and 90’s. This isn’t 2003 anymore, and Jay-Z knows it. As a fan, all I can hope is that his next album isn’t called “Blueprint 4”.
