My favorite passages cover his foreign travels, during which he either reflects on the social conditions he observes there (Manila) or delights in lush landscape (Capetown). Domestically, you can all but smell the Alberta and Saskatchewan prairies; faithful depictions of hardscrabble life on the tundra, inside and outside the ring, make for something close to the Great Western Canadian Novel.
